Poll question: Which year had the worst DU primary wars?
Honestly 2004 is to 2008 what the Spanish American War is to World War II.

2. '04.
At least this year people aren't being accused of being Republicans for supporting their chosen candidate. We haven't had the mass tombstonings either.

8. There's a heavier volume this time around, definitely.
I haven't yet seen anything as bad as some of the vile stuff that was thrown around at Clark though. I am seeing some really crude racism, but the skill level of those trolls is not up to what I remember for '04.

If I'm missing the really bad stuff, maybe you should send me some links though. :)

17. Seriously, do you think the smear machine
will be politically correct and NOT do this? It will be all over the web, and in some TV ads. They will make the 2004 swiftboating look like a day at the beach in comparison. And why would they not do it? It would be so easy, and inexpensive.

10. I dunno....
Last time I was very, very emotional about this and I still think this is far more vile.

The attacks are LOW, they are PETTY, they are just STUPID and OFFENSIVE.

The fact that you remember the skill level of the trolls just underscores it.

It was actually work to answer the attacks because at least they had some *substance*.

This is like a bunch of monkeys throwing shit, lol.

15. Remember all the Wes Clark conspiracy theories spammed by seventhson?
Remember the Haitian man titties? Remember the cointelpro conspiracies? I'd take the idiots flinging their own feces this time around over that lot any day.

22. Haitian man titties???
Okay I missed that one. You've got to tell me.

What I liked last time was that we argued over issues as much as the daily spin. People will blather about Obama not having any issues, but won't stick around to respond when you post something. It's really sad. At least last time everybody was fairly well informed when it came time to jump in for the candidate. That isn't going to be as true this time around.

Sorry I couldn't find a Haitian man titties post, but I'm having trouble with the search function from that far back. Suffice it to say that he was spamming the board constantly with this shit. He did alot of Kerry spamming too.

12. 2004.
There was some really vile shit going on back then. People banned left and right. It also might have seemed worse to me in '04 because I was so passionate for Clark and the most repugnant attacks were thrown against himself and my fellow Clarkies. And this time, while I am firmly behind Edwards, I don't take it nearly as personal when he gets attacked.

14. Tough one.
Last time was pretty bad, but while it was ugly, it mostly stuck to substantial issues. This time around, the freep-trolls are having fun with the race baiting and misogyny, playing Obama and Clinton supporters against one another, and actually, in some cases, revealing some latent racism and sexism in each other.

I think, once the primaries are done, we need to take a step back and examine some of the misogyny and racism I've seen in some DUers and hopefully confront it both in each other and in ourselves. Hillary supporters are quick to point out sexism in others (sometimes valid, sometimes not), but I've seen some latent racism in some of their attacks on Obama. Obama supporters haven't been totally innocent in their attacks on Hillary, either. It's been very, very ugly. I'm hoping we can overcome it once and for all now that it's out on the surface.

16. Last time it was primarily two groups...
Dennis's combative supporters and Dean's combative supporters.

This time the object seems to be the elimination of valid candidates before the primaries even got started.

Since many of us tend to use the behavior of supporters as one measuring a candidates capabilities, many of these attackers have hurt their own candidate's efforts.

Note that Dennis, due to the behavior of his surrogates, has not done well again. Amazing candidate--always working hard to be at the bottom.

19. Should have seen 2002- Greens & progressives vs. DLC'ers and appeasers
The appeasers won- and we all saw what happened.

A beauty of a "strategy" that one was... and unfortunately some of it's carried over to 2008.

23. I came just after the invasion
Although I lurked occasionally before that. But I know when I came here after the invasion that there was constant posts about "what if they find the WMD". I assume those were the DLC appeasers you speak of. That's what makes me a little crazy when people post that all of DU "knew". No, I don't think so. Lots of people here were concerned about there being WMD in Iraq.

27. There was that (fear of finding -or planting WMD's)
Edited on Tue Jan-08-08 10:05 AM by depakid
But mostly it seemed to me that there was a fairly large faction that believed that actively opposing the push to war in Iraq or the so called "patriot" act- or most any of the belligerent and regressive far right proposals would cause us to lose the Senate....

That view was borne out by the leadership- with the coup de grâce coming in the form of Wellstone's plane crashing- and its aftermath.

There were plenty of progressives going to war with the Greens as well. It was not a black and white conflict.
