For Obama Supporters and Strong Leaners ONLY
Edited on Tue Jan-08-08 05:18 PM by FrenchieCat
After today's vote, and especially IF Obama becomes the undefeated frontrunner (New Hampshire is fickle and ornery so I don't take anything for granted) to the primaries thus far, we will have to be prepared to defend him. What's good is that he is very defensible. He has a fine State Senate and Senate record and this shouldn't be a difficult job.

And so, Your job, should you accept to accept it, is to Defend Obama, not simply with our words, but with evidence...and to do so here and elsewhere repeatedly.

I am requesting that we start gathering links, policy positions, media articles, etc to support our arguments as to why Obama is what's right with this country.

Evidenciary Posts can be made in the Obama DU group (which I don't frequent much, but I will). The posts titles should be quite obvious. I also believe that the Obama website also has responses available to issues raised to date.

Please don't think someone else is going to do this job, so take it upon yourself to do it......kinda of like the importance of voting, and what Obama refers to as each one of us making it possible.

If we have a great library of refutation to squelch attacks, they will not only serve us well during the primaries, but serve even better during the General Election; to get out to the media, etc....

As a veteran of the Clark Campaign, all I can tell you is that, once we, the grassroots, can show how knowledgeable we are about our candidate, it will make it harder for opponents to distort or straight out lie about Barack's record. Eventually most will stop trying.....or risk their credibility.

Thank you for your time.....
and for your consideration.

Respectfully

GOBAMA!

Are you with me on this?

1. Kick. I'll do the same for any of our Dems, because it's going to get nasty out there.
It's already nasty right here at DU. Do you have a tidy refutation of the slur that Obama's a gay-basher?

3. Yes,
I do.

Barack Obama and Gay Rights in Illinois: Barack Obama supported gay rights during his Illinois Senate tenure. He sponsored legislation in Illinois that would ban discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.

Barack Obama in the United States Senate: Every two years the Human Rights Campaign, the largest national gay and lesbian organization, issues a scorecard for members of the Senate based on their sponsorship and voting on key issues of importance to gay and lesbian citizens. Barack Obama scored 89 out of 100% in the 2006 scorecard.
Here's how HRC rated Barack Obama:
-Barack Obama on Hate Crimes: Barack Obama co-sponsored legislation to expand federal hate crimes laws to include crimes perpetrated because of sexual orientation and gender identity.

-Employment Non-Discrimination: Barack Obama supports the Employment Non-Discrimination Act and believes it should be expanded to include sexual orientation and gender identity.

-Don't Ask, Don't Tell - Gays in the Military: Barack Obama believes we need to repeal the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy and allow gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military. His campaign literature says, "The key test for military service should be patriotism, a sense of duty, and a willingness to serve."

-Gay & Lesbian Adoption: Barack Obama believes gays and lesbians should have the same rights to adopt children as heterosexuals.

-Barack Obama and Gay Marriage/ Civil Unions: Although Barack Obama has said that he supports civil unions, he is against gay marriage. In an interview with the Chicago Daily Tribune, Obama said, "I'm a Christian. And so, although I try not to have my religious beliefs dominate or determine my political views on this issue, I do believe that tradition, and my religious beliefs say that marriage is something sanctified between a man and a woman."

-Barack Obama did vote against a Federal Marriage Amendment and opposed the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996.

-He said he would support civil unions between gay and lesbian

I actually deployed it tonight, but alas with the usual results.

2. Goodonya! Obama isn't my first choice, but this is...
the way things should be done.

I might be able to help out her and there because it's not just Obama in the primaries, it's OUR partry against THEM in November and anything to help that is a good thing.

No matter who our candidate is.

4. Correct.....
And that's one of my points; Obama supporters and leaners can start gathering the information now to serve the primary purpose of defense...as if he is the nominee, it will serve the greater good of the entire Democratic party after the nominee is know.

I'm fairly sure that some, but not all of the accusations the opposing Dems use, will be some of the same from the GOP.

Thanks for stating that you could help here and there. It is appreciated.

6. You can have the friggin Library of Congress behind you to defend Obama
but you cannot defend the indefensible....that Obama purposefully, cravenly hired an "ex-gay" clown to headline his campaign event in South Carolina at the end of October 2007. You cannot say he didn't receive strong protestation from numerous LGBT groups over this decision who brought up this clown's numerous homophobic statements because he did. You cannot say Obama wasn't warned that this "ex-gay" clown would use the stage and this opportunity to spew more homophobic filth because he was You cannot say that, once this "ex-gay" clown did, in fact, spew homophobic filth at the event to an enthusiastic audience of like-minded bigots, Obama apologized for this insult and denounced the homophobic comments made at the event because he hasn't. Oh sure, he issued some half-hearted bullshit statement that he "disagrees with Pastor Donnie's views", but that hardly atones for the vicious and ugly homophobic filth his hand-picked clown spewed at the event.

7. If you are correct
I'd expect the same standard for all the candidates.
None of the candidates are perfect but personally how some have voted, especially a vote that brought us to a senseless war, are more troubling than the McClurkin episode.

9. I am correct
and I don't see any other candidate personally hiring an "ex-gay" clown singers to headline their campaign events where they need to scare up the religious bigot vote.

11. Your priorities
are your priorities and I've got no beef with that.

I might be more inclined to jump aboard the Obama-train were it not for the McClurkin episode, it does show some questionable judgment and makes me question his priorities to a degree.
For me though, it's MUCH easier to sweep that under the rug than the IWR vote.

10. I'm with you all the way, FrenchieCat!
I'd like to take a short period to allow the victors in NH to enjoy the feeling, which is wonderful, but after that I'll be ready and willing to participate. (I have alot of talking points, position papers, etc. from the NH campaign). You got me!
