Women, diehard Dems keys for Clinton comeback

MANCHESTER, New Hampshire (CNN) – Solid support from registered Democrats and women were crucial Tuesday as Sen. Hillary Clinton reversed her third-place finish in last week's Iowa caucuses to take a narrow victory over rival Barack Obama in New Hampshire's presidential primary, results from exit polls suggest....

Self-styled independents, who made up 43 percent of all voters polled, said they voted for Obama by a margin of 43 percent to 31 percent for Clinton. But Clinton was ahead of Obama 45 percent to 34 percent among those who said they were registered Democrats. Those voters made up a majority — 54 percent — of all those respondents.

Clinton also claimed the majority of women's votes, according to the polling. That's in contrast to last week's Iowa caucuses, in which Obama surprised observers by stealing the female vote from Clinton. According to the exit polls, Clinton had a sizable lead over Obama among women, 47 percent to 34 percent. Analysts say that shift was crucial to the Clinton turnaround. "If I had a single word, the word would be 'women,' " said CNN political analyst Bill Schneider. "She got the women back."

College graduates, who made up 29 percent of the electorate, opted narrowly for Clinton — 38 percent to Obama's 37 percent, according to the polling.

Those polled who called themselves very liberal or moderate went with Clinton over Obama — although by less than two percentage points in each — and those who said they are somewhat liberal were evenly split....

1. 45 - 34 among registered Dems.

It's definitely going to be interesting to see how she does in closed primaries.

2. Obama is going to
Have problems from now on, because he's coming up to the point where he CAN'T rely on the Independent vote.

Democratic Democrats are pro-Hillary, and we're coming up to the place where ONLY Registered Democrats will be able to vote.

5. Unless it's Senator Clinton :)
"Unfortunately that bodes badly for the GE where will need those Independents"

I don't think Senator Clinton will have a problem getting a good portion of Independents if she gets the nomination.

Regarding Obama, as Hillary's support within Registered Democratic ranks is pretty strong, Obama will have problems, where's he's going to go to bolster his numbers?

7. We will have bedridden republicans here do all in their power
to stop Hillary. We had aged republicans here who had never been to the caucuses in decades show up to cross over to stop Hillary. With such determined hatred in the GE no matter whom the GOP runs, and with the antiwar Dems sitting on their hands as many did in 1968 rather than vote for prowar HHH, I don't see Hillary has a real chance in the GE.

4. I'm surprised (but glad) that Obama took the independents...

That is going to play HUGE in the midwest (assuming it would hold there, of course)!

And as far as getting "the women back", I would AGAIN like to remind everyone one that a woman in the midwest is not the same as a woman in the NE. Had Hillary ever "lost" the women in the NE?

ETA: I'm referring to the GE, not primaries, of course.

6. Senator Clinton's women's vote is very broad-based though
She's leading amongst Republican women as well, Republican women are supporting Hillary as well as Democratic women....and THAT bodes very well for the GE if Hillary gets the nomination.

Hillary is talking about things that appeal to women in general across the board:

Healthcare, Childcare, women having control of their OWN bodies and reproductive systems et al.

11. Just like in here as obama in new hampshire, both were looking
for bigots racists under every rock. They thought they had found one on Monday and tried all they could to get the mediahwores to lash out and insinuate that former president Bill Clinton by saying obama was a "fairy tale" somehow was meant to discredit obama cause he is black.

Last night in here there were more posts accusing those that voted for hrc because they could not force themselves to vote for a black man.So now the news is out, 110, 000 or so new hampshire people are bigots and racist?

12. And Chris Matthews, fueled by his hatred of Hillary, pushed the "Bradley effect"...
on MSNBC this morning as hard as he could. I don't know all the answers, but I know, even as an Obama supporter, that Chris Matthews is the last source I would trust to have the answer. Last night, as soon as NH was called, Russert said simply that women had given this victory to Hillary. I am a woman, and I know my friends, and my daughters, and I know how they felt about the treatment Hillary got in the last 24 hours before the polls opened. In my gut, I think, this time, Russert is right.
