13. He is right...
And going into S. Carolina, I really do hope they talk about her inaction on Katrina, and her inaction on the AIDS epidemic in the black community, and her SUPPORT of keeping young black men locked up for years for what a get a white man only probation.

Yes, where were the tears then. He's right to call it out because it was phoney. And that poor litle white girl stuff worked for her in NH, but this is SC and NV, where sistas and Latinas aren't going to feel pity for a priviledged white woman crying crocodile tears when they have to be twice as strong every day of their lives. Not gonna work.

Please, call out the phoney tears and let's talk about some issues affecting the base of this party, who really have something to cry about.

Edited on Wed Jan-09-08 01:09 PM by RufusTFirefly
A fabricated media event designed to plausibly rescue a floundering candidate's campaign as opposed to Dean's case where it was deliberately designed to sink it.

Mission Accomplished.

For Clinton supporters who were galvanized by the incident, I understand. And I don't blame you.

But for voters who supported other candidates but who shifted their votes at the last minute based solely on that incident (assuming you had good reasons to vote against her in the first place), I can't believe you could be so shallow.

Please, the Clinton camp is hardly the moral authority on attacking personality. Actually they have a piss poor record on that.

I find this whole argument laughable. After all...she was a Presidential Candidate, tearing up, choking up (or whatever you want to categorize it as) a day before a Primary election.

I cannot imagine why people think that should have gone unnoticed. If you look at the context of the situation it's clearly understandable.

Admittedly the press just went on about it ad nausea.

There are plenty Black women and latinas in those states. They can call her out becaues these women are women who catch the brunt of hell disguised as racism AND sexism. They are not going to fooled by a priviledged white woman's tears. Trust me. We talk about this stuff all the time.

Registration is open in NV
People can register that day, and switch parties that day. There's still the potential of being swamped by women. I don't think western women in general are going to buy into the whole women stick together thing, but you never know. I think the real problem is not enough focus on Obama's Illinois record and accomplishments anyway. I think the campaign can fix that and stay out of the personal politics at the same time, why risk it. We probably would be better off in the long run to just drop it and focus on what we need to do to get the young people out and convince Democrats he's got the beef.

69. Very true
I think this discussion of voting conspiracy and whose racists is silly. However the truth is that there are certain ideas that are being floated to the public that question Baracks "ability" to be President. Some of the ideas are steeped in racial bias.

It's funny how, some can use the "woman" card when it's convenient yet disparage those who bring up the instances of veiled bigotry in some of the rhetoric that has been tossed around during this campaign.

Just food for thought.

If more people would focus on what Senator has accomplished and stop painting him as being inept and his supporters as being the equivalent of slacked jawed yokels, then maybe just maybe they'd actually learn something.

However I also admit that Senator Obama and his campaign needs to work harder in getting these points across clearly and (yes concisely) to the electorate. Especially during the debates.

The same reason why some black people say they are voting for her because they don't believe white Americans will vote for a Black man for President (one of those individuals is a writer on my blog).

It baffles the mind.

I will state this and it will come across as arrogant or elitist (which I do not mean it to). I think that some (but not all) lower income women may believe the hype because they may not be as well informed about the intricacies of Hillary's record.

Let's face it, if you are lower income and struggling, you have more immediate concerns and issues to deal with than combing for political information on candidates. You may catch a sound bite here or there, but are you as entrenched in vetting the truth from fiction?

22. I agree, hnmnf, we don't need any more of the "pity" vote, so I'm going to say this here and not
say it again. Here's an honest challenge to anyone out there:

Please find me a transcript or a video or a reference out of the past THIRTY FIVE years of "experience in public life" that HRC claims to have, that shows her expressing any emotion or even using that "soft wispy" tone of voice anywhere, anytime, over any tragic incident. During her time in Arkansas, during the campaigns, during the brutal WH years where she says she's been attacked daily, during Fostergate, Monicagate, Whitewatergate, impeachment hearings, 9/11, Katrina, Iraq.. you get the drift. Find me something, anything... where this woman showed any emotion or used a softer tone of voice. If she did, its got to be out there, somewhere.

It was speculated after her fuzzy-imaged, wispy voiced Closing Ad from Iowa that she'd had a voice coach come in to help her be less.. well, whatever. So show me something from her last two decades in front of cameras where this emotion has been so vividly on display. If this is the reason voters now now she's "one of us", show me where she ever has been before. Remember that she did not miss a breath, even in the grip of such strong emotion, to go on and attack Senator Obama. She was still controlled enough to do that.

My point: Hillary says she has "found her voice". Yes, she certainly has, and its what we'll see from here to next November. Get used to it.

Flame away or find me proof.

29. I think the crying was real
But it was phoney because I think she cried from pure stress and fatigue (also, she's 60 and probably on hormomes), not because of love of country. It was physical and she couldn't stop the waterworks, so she did some quick thinking and parlayed it into something that won her NH, point blank. She was tired and frustrated, it wasn't about sentiment. But she turned it around.

The Clinton campaign is really drumming up the crying thing today. They know it's what won NH. Everyone knows that.

I hate him as a campaigner. Carl Bernstein is discussing this very thing on Thom Hartmann right now. He's saying that Bill has used comments made by Obama, and used them completely out of context, to try and stop Obama's momentum.

I'll be honest, I'm a southern African American male, and my heart has been with John & Elizabeth Edwards for a long time because I think they are sincere about wanting to help people who, for too long, have been disenfranchised. But Obama is beginning to look better and better to me.

45. This will not backfire
This is a very white board, and people on here DO NOT understand the complex "sisterhood" of women of color and white women. Women of color talk about this all the time. And if there is one thing that keeps up from being true "sister" with white women, it's exactly what Hillary did in NH. She used her entitled attitude and her white womanhood to garner votes from her white sisters. Those black women and latinas in SC and NV are not gonna be swayed by that foolishness. Their dealing with real life, and guess what, they don't have any one to come out and save them. They don't have the white priviledge of being a damsel in distress. Hillary got her "white girl" on the other day. Women of color know what I'm talking about and they know that's something that drives a wedge between women of color and white women. We ain't buying it!

Talking about this will not hurt them in SC or NV.

79. Yes...
and it's funny how, we, as in his supporters (and potential voters) are expected to just overlook that little tidbit.

I found it vile and disgusting and really tipped the scale for me in regards to solidifying my support for Senator Obama. I was willing to give all the candidates a chance to garner my vote, but once again the Democratic party has let me down.

If I can find one glaring flaw in Senator Obama's candidacy it's that he belongs to this party of hypocrisy.

Also, I do not know why Jesse Jackson Jr is a part of his campaign, although I don't believe in neccessarily putting the sins of the father onto the son, I have to say that the stink carried over from his dad's actions in recent years does not settle well with me.

I feel the black caucus in congress has done nothing but positioned themselves as life long congressmen and women while doing little to truly serve the communities they represent. We need new blood in Congress and the Executive branch.

are having a ball laughing at the stupid people who are now falling for their often used tactic of 'Divide and Conquer.' Let's pit the Blacks against the women. This will be so much fun. Their is also a nice hint of pitting the old folks against the young.

Keep it up Dems, and we'll have McCain....he's the darling of the Corporate War Boys.

Look at history people...the American voters do NOT like change. It's too scary for them. Look at '68, '72.

And lots of people look back fondly at the Clinton years....good economy, no deficits, steady foreign relations. And will the southern Red States vote for Obama? This was the complaint against Kerry because he was another New Englander.

127. You have bought the
Corporate Elites/Rothschilds-type 'Divide and Conquer' tactic hook, line and sinker.

If you are female, you obviously have no idea what people like Gloria Steinem have done for you...Forty years ago a woman was fired from work for getting pregnant. Domestic Violence Shelters, rape crisis centers, child care centers, wage equality, Title IX at colleges...I could go on and on. Go ahead and think you're soooooo progressive because you're supporting a young black man...you're just like the stupid poor republicans who vote against their own financial interests. Or are you rebelling against your parents??

If you are a product of the public school system, I guess the repugnants' strategy of starving it has worked. Critical thinking and analysis are no longer taught. (Did it ever occur to you that the Publishing Companies are run by rich, white guys who will never include anything about Feminists like Ms. Steinem who have made the world more fair and just for YOU...??)

Sorry, but you don't have one billionth of the honesty, integrity, intelligence and compassion of Ms. Steinem. Ever read any of her books? Googled her? Any of the 2nd wave Feminists who fought to give YOU a better life.

Seriously, the Clintons don't come close to having the power, money, and media access that the likes of the Corporate Elites possess....people (white, ugly rich guys) who easily make $1,000,000,000.00 per year. Got that? We're talking inherited wealth that goes back centuries, OK?

Wake up. Stop embarrassing yourself. Read a book and while you're at, check out which ones of these billionaires is giving money to Obama...I think Obama just found his new papa. Don't be so easily persuaded by a male who promises you the world....Young women going gaga over him should be reserved for people who really do play the guitar.

140. One thing....
Let's see... if you get pregnant, are you getting fired? I hope not.

Can an employer give you a pregnancy test before hiring you? I hope not.

Can your boss sexually harass you? I hope not.

Can you get an abortion? I hope it's available, I hope you never have to have one.

If you are raped by your husband, can you press charges? I hope so, although I hope it never happens to you.

If you are married, can you buy property in your own name? I hope so.

If my hopes are anywhere close to correct, you can thank those women. You can thank some other "privileged white women" for your right to vote and your right to have birth control -- remember that less than 100 years ago women could not vote and information about family planning was considered "pornographic".

Are you willing to say that women of color did not experience these things as well, before these "privileged white women" decided to speak up about what was happening to ALL women? Are you really willing to say that you have received no benefit from the things these women did?

As far as other women of color who know your struggle, don't leave out Zora Neale Hurston.

42. To assume that black voters will vote for someone just because they're black..
that just seems so demeaning. When someone supporting Obama comes out and starts talking about who the black voters should vote for, because of race, is wrong. Voters aren't supposed to judge a candidate by the color of their skin when deciding who to vote for (that's the chatter here on DU this morning talking about OBama losing NH because of his race), yet Jesse Jackson, Jr. can do it in reverse. It seems like an insult to assume that people of color will vote for Obama, and not give any other thought to other issues or preferences that may be important to them. Makes me ill to see the "woman vote" the "black vote" the "gay vote", as though everyone has no brains of their own.

Does Jessie Jackson, Jr. KNOW that Hillary didn't cry over Katrina? I agree, if I was supporting Obama I would be cringing right now.

92. Although I whole-heartedly agree
Edited on Wed Jan-09-08 02:17 PM by DivorcingNeo
with what you are stating about people voting the issues and ideals and not based on skin color, gender, class or sexual orientation, I have to point out a couple of things.

My support of Senator Obama is not about his skin color...that's simply a bonus. I would be dishonest if I didn't state that after all blacks have endured in this country, our tainted history and the mountains that have been climbed toward equality...it is very exciting to see A Black Presidential candidate with everything it takes to win. After all we are only 40 years removed from the CRA. Then, not to mention, there was resistance through the seventies and early eighties to enforce the laws passed.

In addition, let's not forget... after all of that... there continues to be an uneven playing field, with the Majority of this country having a head start on things like, education, prosperity and the garnering of wealth. We are, as a black community, starting from the ground up to get to where a lot in our society already are due to decades of assumed privilege.

There was a time I was interested in Hillary Clinton as our potential President, but as I truly paid attention to her political maneuvering and most importantly her actions (since becoming a Senator), I realized that this was all one grand scheme meant to position her to be where she is now.

It's ambition but at the expense of the electorate. It has little to do with improving the country (in my honest opinion). It may be about besting Bill. I'm not saying that this is absolute fact, but my (*chuckles*) female intuition believes there may be some truth in that idea.

Finally, as I told one woman on my blog, Barack Obama is not the Black Presidential candidate and would not be Black America's President. He would be the President of the United States and represent everyone. I do believe he can be the first step in healing our country and truly moving forward. However in knowing that, we cannot stick our heads in the sand about the issues that divide us. I think some simple straight talk is in order to truly come together and make a difference.

78. ... she SAID it: "This is personal" ...
... she was 'crying' because she simply cannot fathom that the rest of America does not appreciate her 40+ years of unbridled ambition and being married to a man she probably can't stand because he was her best chance at being more than just a 'corporate lawyer'.

It was perhaps a slight reality check for her, that despite what SHE wants and what SHE thinks she deserves and how great a President SHE thinks she'd be, her lifelong well-laid plans may actually not come to fruition.

Entirely self-absorbed tears, IMO.

She's never cried for the limbless, homeless orphans living in filth in Iraq as a result of her votes supporting the occupation.

She's never cried for the wives, mothers, daughters and sisters of the troops coming home in plastic bags or living in flith at Walter Reed as a result of her votes supporting the occupation.

Those tragedies must not be 'personal' enough. :puke:

106. I think
Clinton went to Rwanda and personally apologized for mistakes during the crises and genocide there. Shall he commit suicide to make you happy?

On your first comment about laughing on video, you have no idea what he was laughing about or talking about or thinking about when that camera was watching him unless you are a mutant with psychic/telepathic powers previously unseen in the natural world. What you are really doing with that comment is projecting some childish hate onto him that stems from plain old ignorance.

123. Thank you, thank you!
For bringing up the point about Rwanda. I have referred to it several times in different threads in regards to Bill Clinton's administration.

Why people are overlooking that, I have no clue.

98. America OWES more tears over Katrina - Better yet, some damn help.
I am fully behind any reminder of this tragedy and our government's shameful response.

Make levees, not war.

110. Well..
with black folks like Jonathan Capeheart plastering his face all over cable news, implying that Katrina victims from the 9th ward should shut up about the housing situation because what they had before was shit...it's not wonder the government and many aren't moved to help much. The fact is that we have to help our own in regards to Katrina.

Back to Capeheart, this man has made some really questionable comments lately from Katrina to Barack Obama. When he stated his aunt said she didn't want to vote for Obama for President because he might embarrass us black folks, I nearly wanted to reach through the screen and pound his head into the fucken floor. What a ignorant thing to repeat on national television. It wasn't worthy of addressing, more like self hatred on full display...why give it a forum?

Gawd next to the thugs he (and his aunt)are a few examples of the inner mental health issues plaguing the black community. Self loathing at it's best. When will some black people escape the plantation...we're free ya know?!

112. There is much crap floating around on the airwaves.
And that is unfortunate because many Americans can't/don't/won't discern truth from bullshit.

119. Maybe there will be a Jesse J. Jr. And McClurkin reunion tour in SC?
Sorry - couldn't resist.

The campaign in SC is going to get ugly. I just hope there isn't too much mud thrown that the dem nominee, whoever it is, can get beyond it in time for the general election.

I don't begrudge her breaking down over some bad polling, I just wish she showed the same amount of pity for those who died because she refused to stand up when it counted.

I'm still holding my breath as I type for her apology.

132. An awful lot of really lightweight Dems on this board attacking Hillary...
Katrina: Why are you not lambasting BushCo and 'Heck Of A Job Brownie' for their myriad failures before, during, and after Katrina? You say that Hillary didn't cry for the victims of Katrina. How do you know that...or were you all cockroaches on her floor during and after the storm. Do you blame Hillary for the Katrina problems that are ongoing...or do you direct your anger at BushCo for actually making the situation worse than it is.

Its all Hillary's fault. She after all was one of 76 Senators who voted for the IWR...and again the spurious claim that Hill hasn't cried for our war dead and wounded--again, how do you know what she has or hasn't done in the privacy of her home or office? You don't, but it sure sounds good as an attack venue.

You are the same sort of lightweight Dems who consistantly stabbed both Bill and Hillary for the good things they attempted to do--and by attacking them, instead of Gingrich and the GOPAK congress, you allowed them to be stopped.

To you, and you know who you are, it is the easiest thing in the world to attack any woman on unsubstanciated grounds. After all, women--black and white--are used to it. Right?

Protect Obama. Protect Axelrod. Protect Jesse Jackson JR. Attack that woman for 'winning.' How dare she do so?

137. Hillary spin-meisters CLAIMED that he blamed her...
He said that going to Iraq distracted us from Pakistan, and allowed islamic extremists to fester there (those same extremists killed Buttho).

So it's for you to link Hillary's vote to go to Iraq and the situation in Pakistan. It is there.

The Hillary spin artists somehow spun it as a personal attack on Hillary.... which is sad.
