8. Thanks, calimary!
I saw Obama on MSNBC saying he felt the voters didn't want to "just hand the keys of the White House" to him. He raised half a million dollars over night, got this endorsement, is at a packed event right now in NJ...I think he'll be ok. :hi:

13. Not true. This endorsement from this union is huge!
Edited on Wed Jan-09-08 03:20 PM by jenmito
The members of this union make up about a quarter of the expected caucus goers and since it's a caucus, they'll have influence to bring others to his side.

17. are you familiar with Nevada? It was my experience...
(I went to UNR) that cooks and service workers made so little and had so little free time that they did not involve themselves in political activism. Some voted in the general elections, but none that I can remember played the early games at all. I worked in the casinos to help pay tuition and such that the GI Bill wasn't enough for, and such things as food.

Admittedly that was quite awhile back, but I still keep in touch with a couple of friends there. I am not denigrating the union, just stating that it's impact is minimal, except for the free press it generates. Nevadans being quite conservative on the whole, and pretty anti-union as well are not influenced by unions. You have to also consider that this particular unions membership represents one of the more 'fluid' groups: in that the members are not long term, they are by and large transient.

23. No, but NV political analysts are, and they've all said that this is huge,
and that the 60,000-strong union is very politically involved. If they're all saying this is a VERY big deal, I believe them.

24. Below
Gerald W. McEntee, the president of the other major union supporting Clinton, wrote on The Huffington Post that “the Obama campaign’s criticism of our political action committee and some of the so-called 527 efforts, such as the one organized in support of Edwards, is troubling because they are suggesting that workers are somehow a special interest, just like insurance companies and the pharmaceutical industry.”

”We fight for the general interest,” wrote McEntee, whose American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees has spent $1,409,312 boosting Clinton and criticizing Obama.

19. 60,000 member CWU and SEIU endorse Obama
Edited on Wed Jan-09-08 04:38 PM by LVZ
The two large union endorsements, the SEIU and Culinary Workers Union, are very important in Nevada.

The Nevada CWU has 60,000 members, more than the consensus predicted turnout for the Nevada caucuses.

Those December predictions from local political pundits, however, may be too low now that the significance of caucus results has increased.

26. I agree. Everyone was saying it would be a big blow to Obama if he didn't get this endorsement...
they first said they'd endorse him if he WON. They chose to endorse him anyway, which says a lot.

Obama really needs to gain back that momentum he lost from Clinton's shocking NH win.
