A country of one -- you won't believe what McCain just said
Edited on Wed Jan-09-08 03:57 PM by lwcon
* I don't usually ask this, but please K&R if you want more people to know about this shocking statement *

Today, John McCain said this:

“There is only one man who should decide when to withdraw from Iraq and that is..."

The complete sentence appears below. Take a moment to think about how that sentence should end.

Then read on.

“There is only one man who should decide when to withdraw from Iraq and that is David Petraeus.”

Discuss.

1. When Petraeus spawn are the only members of the military
and he personally pays the entire cost, maybe its his choice.

Until then, the American ppl have a say.

13. I forgot to include when America's name is not attached to it
McCain must never have bothered to research Vietnam after he came back home.
Cause if it was up to the military, he's still be rotting in a cage.

16. And let's not forget this McCain classic, first reported on the NYT blog
http://www.correntewire.com/some_of_my_favorite_quotes_of_2007

McCain answering a question on whether condoms prevent the spread of HIV:

I’m not informed enough on it. Let me find out. You know, I’m sure I’ve taken a position on it on the past. I have to find out what my position was. Brian, would you find out what my position is on contraception – I’m sure I’m opposed to government spending on it, I’m sure I support the president’s policies on it.”

17. I remember that--boy, how soon the press forgets (or covers up)
that the man can't even remember what he's supposed to think and say about important topics. I have the weird feeling that the press corps that follows him knows there's something wrong with him mentally, and they're just not wanting to break the spell of the war hero's "comeback".

That really is scary. Tells me that McCain would be even more of a "delegator" than St Ronnie.

5. I know someone who was in Vietnam with John McCain.
And do you know what this person said to McCain once?

"I was smart enough to not get caught."

7. I'm not laughing
John McCain is a establishment creep, a greedy crook and a complete suck up to the theocrats
He's slime.

but joking about prisoners of war is beyond low.
I would hope better of DU members and would ask you to remove your 'joke'

thank-you

14. It's not really a joke. It's a true story.
I don't see it as "joking about prisoners of war" at all. Rather, it's what one person thinks of John McCain.

20. the 'rofl'
I took as indication that you thought being taken prisoner of war was funny.

I don't like McCain. Can't stand him. And even if your just relying your friends 'humorous' opinion, you need to understand it's not a subject to be 'joked' about.

It's not that big of a difference between snarking someone ought to have been smarter about not getting caught by the enemy and wearing a purple bandaid at a convention.

I'm sure you didn't mean to be offensive but it really, really is.

His support for this war undermines any credibility he may have once had.

23. Yep--I respect his service, but...doesn't stop me from bashing him--
I really think Vietnam fucked him up. He can't fucking let it go--he's not seeing this war clearly, and seems terrified that Congress might stop this war the way they stopped Vietnam--before VICTORY!!

24. I'm not sure it was Vietnam that screwed him up
seems more likely it's his own craven need to be in the White House.
He's gone from dissing the Falwell crowd to kissing their ring...

25. He really, really loves war. It's not a calculated position for him, he
means it--he is an absolute true believer in military solutions for every problem, and he thinks it's those "politicians" who want to end the Iraq war before the United States can have its orgasm of glory and victory, which he was denied in Vietnam, after sitting for 5 years in a bamboo cage for the cause. This man should not be a CiC, or be allowed near the big red button.

I'm uneasy attributing his stance to his experience in Vietnam.
No doubt McCain loves him some war but then again so does Chicken hawk Cheney.
and wouldn't want to paint all former POWs as warmongers

28. Ordinarily I wouldn't make assumptions like that either, but...
watching and listening to him over the years, it's very clear to me. Remember a few months ago, Code Pink staged a little protest at the back of his town hall meeting--the officers were escorting the women outside, and McCain screamed, "We beat you yesterday, we beat you today, and we'll beat you tomorrow!" to the protestors. With that same "gates of hell" bravado that he uses with Bin Laden. Obviously, his biggest enemy is anyone who stands in the way of war, and VICTORY!!! He is really fucked up.

15. Also...
If McCain is planning for us to stay in Iraq for 100 years, does Petraeus leave a living/dying/killing will that says when we can leave, or will they be keeping his head in one of those "Futurama" jar thingies?

31. I hope he's talking about a limited scope of a military agenda. It is not the military's
job to formulate policy, engage in diplomacy, and direct a war. Isn't that why we have a President who is Commander in Chief? And a Congress?

This is scary stuff.

Maybe he meant about the military part of the objective. Or....maybe he only HAS a military objective in Iraq, and nothing else.
