Poll question: Seriously, now: Who would you like to see nominated if we had a "brokered convention"
That is, if we went with somebody other than this year's primary candidates?

I'll lay out a few, you can suggest some others:

9. Actually I have only heard him once
and he sounded very impressive. Thanks for the name - I was just trying to think of who it was on that NPR interview a while back who impressed me!

14. Joe Biden, but only if the Democrats want to win this election
Which I'm now convinced they don't. They're more interested in playing games and making statements with weaker candidates. I think the Party is hopelessly doom to run in circles chasing its tail.

19. The big problem Biden would face would be
Why should the party nominate somebody who demonstrated no support at all in the primaries?

I mean, nobody voted for him in Iowa whatsoever.

Don't you see that as a problem?

(Don't get me wrong, I'd back him if nominated, just trying to sound you out a bit more on this).

33. correction - low support in NH and IA

To me it depends on what happens with the current campaigns and events in the big wide world.

If some international shit hits the fan, McCain will look good to people who pick superficially or buy the GOP = better on terror/war argument.

The remaining 4 Dems look awfully weak on security and foreign affairs to me. That was the #1 reason I supported Biden - credibility across the spectrum (have heard so many independents and moderate Republicans say they would vote for him) + ability to work with GOP in Congress (you're fooling yourself if you think the Dems will control the next 8 years with a large margin) + realistic plan to get us out of Iraq. And until we're out of Iraq in a credible way, none of the domestic dreams of the other candidates are going to happen.

I'm more worried about getting the GOP out, but the American Idol contest seems to have won out.

OK, enough wallowing in my personal disappointment. But I'll be sporting "Don't blame me - I supported Biden" gear soon.

37. I'll third that
Now I think we need him more than ever. I think he could bring not only the party together, but the country and the world as well. We need change and I think Gore would be the best agent of that change, particularly in revolutionizing how we approach the environment and the oil economy, as well as helping to bring about a new wave of green-based jobs.

7. Yikes. My mom. There's a scary thought.
Yeah, she's a liberal dem, a brilliant woman who speaks four languages fluently, but take it from me, you wouldn't want to see her as president.

Hey, where's Bernie?

8. Well, he's still an independent, so technically, we couldn't nominate him
Although some of us would gladly put that technicality aside.
(Especially since the DLC'ers who wouldn't back him are already gonna vote for Bloomburg anyway and won't get punished for it, like they didn't get punished for backing HolyWar Joe in the fall of '06).

Edwards would be a sure winner, which is why the media and the Beltway Dems don't want him.

16. Brokered conventions have turned to candidates, not to non-candidates
even to candidates that have dropped out. Denver Convention will never turn to an untested politician, one that has not gone through the process.

It's hard to see them raising hands in the "unity" gesture at Denver. A bit too much blood is being spilled at the moment.

42. I'm not basing that on what I read on DU. I'm basing that on what they're saying about each other
And how the MSM is playing it.

They could easily destroy each other between now and Denver. Which wouldn't be a good thing, and which would mean we'd have to cast both of them aside and come up with somebody better so we weren't stuck with an "inevitable loser" like in '68, '84 or '04.

or your mom?

And if you mean every voter's mom who voted "your mom," wouldn't that split the vote?

Maybe we should choose one person's mother and get behind her.

36. Because this thread is in response to the OTHER "brokered convention" thread
Where the choices were AL, AL, AL, AL, AL, AL, and oh yeah, AL.

I'd be glad to see AL nominated this year, but I thought that a poll offering other options should be out there as well.

OK?
