As the issue of race dominates the campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) on Monday received the endorsement of the president of California’s NAACP.

“Over the years, Hillary Clinton has earned my respect as a staunch advocate for the rights of people invisible to our nation's government, including women, minorities, children and seniors,” said Alice Huffman, who heads California’s National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

“Hillary shares my commitment to children, and has been a lifelong advocate for improving childhood education and healthcare. As president, I feel strongly that Hillary will create an atmosphere in this country that accepts and promotes the rights of all Americans.”

The endorsement is much-needed for Clinton, who vehemently denied this weekend that her campaign is making race an issue. Clinton and her main rival, Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), have battled for the past few days over comments Clinton made about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Both are seeking African-American support in the South Carolina primary, and in a host of states, including California, that hold contests on Feb. 5.

Huffman Supports Clinton as "staunch advocate for rights of all Americans"

LOS ANGELES, CA - The Clinton campaign today announced the endorsement of Alice Huffman, President of the California State Conference of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP.) The endorsement comes on the anniversary of Martin Luther King’s birthday. Senator Clinton delivered a speech in honor of the national holiday today at an SEIU celebration in New York City.

"Over the years, Hillary Clinton has earned my respect as a staunch advocate for the rights of people invisible to our nation's government, including women, minorities, children, and seniors," said Huffman. "Hillary shares my commitment to children, and has been a lifelong advocate for improving childhood education and health care. As President, I feel strongly that Hillary will create an atmosphere in this country that accepts and promotes the rights of all Americans."

Huffman has a distinguished career in public advocacy. Since 1999, she has been president of the California State Conference of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the nation's oldest civil rights organization. In 2002, Huffman was elected to the NAACP's National Board of Directors were she currently serves as Region I Board Member. Huffman has previously served as associate executive director for politics for the California Teachers Association and state president of the Black American Political Association of California.

In considering the possible convention sites, members of the advisory committee will in the end give more heed to budget numbers and infrastructure than briefcases, baclava, and baby items, but if there is wavering between two cities such thoughtful gestures could ultimately tip the balance in favor of one city or another.

At today's meeting, members of the advisory committee did preliminary reviews of the four proposals, heard from technical experts about some of the factors they will have to weigh, and determined to visit the four cities still in contention--Boston, Detroit, Miami and New York. The meeting was also a chance for the members of the committee to get acquainted with each other.

The advisory committee will make site visits in June and July, and, as an economy measure, members will divide up the visits so that each person will visit two of the four competing cities. The committee will make its final recommendations to McAuliffe in late summer. The DNC will announce the site in fall 2002.

Advisory committee co-chair Joe Andrew said the committee will be seeking the host city that is "best for our delegates and the best for the nominee." It will require, he said, "the forging of a unique partnership." In addition to the infrastructure requirements, the committee is seeking as much budget flexibility as possible. "We want to be able to move things from one budget area to another," Andrew said.

In an earlier interview, Andrew said the large size of the advisory committee reflects the party's efforts to be very inclusive and to reach out to people from different geographic, racial, and experiential backgrounds. Serving on the 40-person committee, named by McAuliffe in January 2002, are people such as Willie Brown, mayor of San Francisco; Pepper English, vice president of congressional relations for Bell South; Fred Baron, 2000-2001 president of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America; Alma Brown, widow of former DNC chair and Secretary of Commerce Ron Brown; Larry Scanlan, political director for AFSCME; Calvin Smyre, a state representative from Georgia who chairs the House Rules Committee; and David Mixner, a writer and fundraiser prominent in the gay and lesbian community.

Those payments to Huffman, coupled with NAACP endorsements, have some
activists in the African-American community wondering where exactly
Huffman's consulting operation ends and the NAACP begins.

"These are very questionable kinds of activities," says Joe Hicks, former
executive director of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the
civil-rights organization founded by Martin Luther King, Jr. "That she's
receiving money from industry folks and all of a sudden is carrying the
water for their interests--it should raise some eyebrows."

But critics point out that her consulting firm lists
the exact same address as the state NAACP. A second political-action
committee, also controlled by Huffman, lists the identical address. The
phone numbers differ by a single digit and share a phone system.

In the 1994 governor's race, Democratic candidate Kathleen Brown contributed
$170,000 to the Committee to Protect the Political Rights of Minorities,
whose treasurer was Huffman.

Brown's Democratic rival, John Garamendi, accused Brown of using the
$170,000 payment to try to buy the CTA endorsement, charging that, in
exchange, Huffman slipped Brown copies of the interview questions and
briefed her on how to respond.

Both Brown and Huffman denied the charge, but, a month later, the CTA
dismissed Huffman from her job--which she had held for almost a decade--giving
her a $220,00 buyout, according to published reports.

we say, activities and then bridging that into her work at the NAACP," says
Hicks, who co-founded Community Advocates, a Los Angeles-based civil-rights
group, in 2002. "One has to ask questions about the national office
in Baltimore and why they are not watching what goes on."

The news that Alice Huffman, President of the California chapter of the NAACP, being paid $12,000 per month to lobby on at&t’s behalf in the recent state franchising legislation goes beyond surprise or disappointment straight to shock and disgust. No doubt her title as NAACP head put her in a perfect position to pull down this cash, which she did not earn on behalf of the chapter but on her own behalf. Then again, this payola comes in second to the $160,000 she took on behalf of big tobacco.

I really have no idea who Alice Huffman is, for while she may be big news in California politics, she certainly does not command a national stage. While Alice may be a legend in her own mind, she is what they would call a “small potato” to anyone outside of the Golden State. In fact she is so obscure she doesn’t even Google well. I finally tracked down her picture and she looks nice enough, so I have to conclude she is just greedy.
