He spoke to the Pakistani ambassador.

1. He did speak to Musharfaf

First he called the ambassador and told him that he wanted to talk to Musharaf. The Ambassador relayed the message and Musharaf called Edwards back.

You must have misunderstood... or you didn't hear the entire answer.
