Those cheering on Romney may find out it'll come back to bite them in the ass.
Edited on Tue Jan-15-08 11:20 PM by Drunken Irishman
I wasn't cheering for Romney to win Michigan. He has and now I expect him to win the Republican nomination. Why? Well because he has a ton more money than any other candidate and now is in it for the long haul. Had he lost Michigan, he'd be done and this wouldn't be up for debate. But who is going to stop him? Cash strapped McCain? Hated by the right Huckabee? The only candidate who can compare with Mitt's money is Giuliani and I think he sunk his campaign by skipping Iowa, New Hampshire, Michigan and South Carolina.

The longer this campaign drags on, the easier it will be for the money candidates to win. Now that Romney has new life, he should have no problem winning key states on his way to the nomination. The scary part? I can see Romney winning in the general election, because he IS presidential.

Who wins the likeable facto there?

22. I don't like Hillary
and would prefer Obama, but she comes off much better than Romney.

I think she's tear him to shreds. Romney comes off completely fake. He's a tool. Even Hillary, for all her faults exudes more authenticity. I suppose he'd be competitive, but Romney would be MUCH easier to beat than McCain.

2. I honestly don't understand why he won. What is he offering in a
state that's so depressed? His management acumen? Yes, he has lots of money, he promised to make the economy better, but how?

3. McCain and the Huckster scare me the most for different reasons...
McCain scares me cause he can win and the Huckers religious banter just plain old scares me.

8. Romney should scare you.
Because he's a blank canvas, much like Bush in 2000.

Bush billed himself as a moderate conservative, who wanted to reform Washington. Romney is doing the same, sans the moderate part. The only issue with Romney is that he appears to be too fake, but who knows how big of an impact that will have in a general?

If Romney gets elected, expect a president who will be molded by everyone EXCEPT the American public and their values. He's a tool, just like Bush.

15. Romney's got a shit ton of baggage to carry into a general election
He's easily the most attackable Republican candidate.

Huckabee? Sure, but there'd be a backlash from religious voters if you attack him too hard.

McCain? Maybe, but his perceived independent streak insulates him a bit.

Rudy? Yeah, but by wrapping himself in 9/11 it becomes a scorched earth kinda thing.

Romney is just an empty suit, flip flopping, corporate, member of a cult like church that no one really likes or trusts.

He'll be destroyed in a general election.

6. I don't understand the Michigan win.
I'd heard that Romney's forte was buying companies, slashing the number of employees, then selling at a profit. It was posited that Michigan, with its high unemployment rate, would not support someone like that. Any insight, anyone?

beware of him as a candidate. He has the tools to win.

And really beware if he becomes President. He's kind of a dope.

9. I don't see Romney as presidential at all? In what way?
What makes him presidential? I think he is cookie cutter republican--no new ideas, no new nothing.
He says that Washington is broken. He says he'll fix it. It is broken but he has and does agree with 100% of what * has done and does.

He's 100% phony.

12. Yeah, I'm worried too.
It's a dangerous game, keeping someone richer than God in the race. I just hope the lowest common denominator "who'd you have a beer with" politics winnows the Republican field to a nominee that can't win.

13. Which Republican candidate would be preferential?
They all suck, they all potentially could win.

But Mitt is easily the most beatable. The evangelicals hate him, the social conservatives hate him. He won in Massachusetts because Democrats were willing to vote for him - that wouldn't be the case in a GE.

I say bring him on. He doesn't have the support of his party base and he is a very weak candidate. He is easily beatable. McCain is the one to be most afraid of in my opinion.

16. Romney makes a lot of blunders. He embarrasses himself often and
his being Mormon will cost him votes in many states. The Republican Religious Right base won't know what to do with him. Some may stay home.

His dad use to be Gov of Michigan so he should have won there.

18. None of the GOP candidates is exactly flush with money
Romney's money has mostly come from his own pocket. McCain, as you noted, is cash-strapped, Giuliani had to fight off rumors that he wasn't paying his staff, and Huckabee thinks he can run a national campaign like he's running an Arkansas campaign. There isn't a lot of excitement on the Republican side, and people aren't contributing or volunteering for their campaigns. Nobody feels the jolt, nobody has the essential "I'm part of something bigger" feeling.

But the real grit-under-the-contact for the GOP is that they're used to having their candidate chosen for them. We're certainly having our share of disagreements and disputations here at DU, but the Republicans aren't used to such a bloodbath. They are a lot more comfortable following the dictates of their leaders, and right now there isn't a leader. Bush is a deeply unpopular president, nobody's been annointed, and waiting for the situation to resolve itself isn't something the GOP does very well.

20. I want Romney to win the Republican nomination.
In addition to being the most tolerable of the Republicans (not saying a whole lot there), thus minimizing risk, he's also just about the easiest candidate to beat in the General.

25. He's a spineless worm without a whit of conviction.
Ergo, he might occasionally respond to public pressure (as he did from time to time as Gov. of MA), unlike the "fuck y'all I'm right" stances of Bush, Giuliani, McCain, Thompson, and the like.

31. Romney became a far right dickhead in this state and was exactly like GW Bush
He tryed to attack abortion while governor DESPITE the voters telling him to fuck off.

He instituted a healthcare program that forces everyone in this state to buy health insurance and fines for not doing so. He fucking closed down many of the summer programs here which was keeping juvenile crime at bay despite wishes of the voters.

This motherfucker is closer to Bush's way of thinking than the rest of the candidates put together. And he's a real greasy snake oil salesmen when he does it.

He can smooth talk Mother Theresa out of her panties.

No foreign policy experience.
Ridiculous right wing primary positions.
Poor large audience speaker.
Uneasy relationship with evangelicals libertarians.
Not as much money as your think.

28. Our candidate has to run against somebody. Might as well be him.
Say our candidate is someone who may come across as a stiff and unlikeable. Well, so's Romney. Say our candidate might be criticized for having a lack of foreign policy experience. Well, same with Romney. Say our candidate might be criticized as someone who has changed positions. Well, can't be more than Romney.

IMO, McCain is a much bigger threat to our candidate (and polling data backs me up). A year ago, I was saying that McCain wasn't a worry because the republican base hates him and he'd never win the primary. I didn't count on the bozos he'd be up against.

32. There's chaos in Republikan-land
Romney is such a flip-flopping tool. He is so easy to defeat, look at the national polls against Clinton or Obama. He loses....not that I trust polls much anymore. I live in CT, the state below Mass and Romney has been talked about as being a major idiot with no real sense of what people really want when they elect a leader. Plus, a Romney win means Repubs are in chaos. Who will win? Who cares. Even MSM and Tweety thinks the Dems will win the General Election.
