Poll question: January 17 is 10-year anniversary of the explosive Monica Lewinsky scandal

On the evening of Saturday January 17, 1998, the internet gossip merchant Matt Drudge posted
a story that opened the most sensational scandal season in the history of the American presidency.
He reported that Newsweek magazine had killed a story about President Clinton’s sexual
relationship with a former intern. The next day he had her name: Monica Lewinsky.

Since Bill Clinton seems intent on destroying Barack Obama's candidacy, should his or other candidate
surrogates bring up the anniversary that some find a stain on the American Presidency?

while asking inappropriate questions about it.

But in some ways, you're right - we were all "taken for a ride." and now the chickens have come home to roost ... I sometimes "wish that I didn't know now, what I didn't know then." :(

39. Heaven's Gate-Have We Forgotten Them?
The structure of Heaven's Gate resembled that of a medieval monastic order. Group members gave up their material possessions and lived a highly ascetic life devoid of many indulgences. The group was tightly knit and everything was shared communally. Six of the male members of the group voluntarily underwent castration as an extreme means of maintaining the ascetic lifestyle.

34. Ignore history at your peril
I love the abject anger at something that actually happened. Yes, it's embarrassing. Yes, we all have to watch it. Yes, it disappointed many of us who trusted Clinton. Yes, it distracted us from getting what we needed to get done.

Should an Obama surrogate or an Edwards surrogate mention it like the Clinton surrogates have done mentioning shit about Obama that had far, far less repercussions to the Democratic Party at large?

No. Obama and Edwards surrogates have a lot more class than ham-headed Clinton surrogates.

54. Your anger about Clinton's past is very revealing
I mentioned that the issue is about surrogates for any of the other candidates bringing up the anniversary as an issue.

Bill Clinton DID have a relationship with Monica Lewinsky. Correct? Bill Clinton DID lie about the relationship. Correct? Bill Clinton is attacking Obama with distortions and lies.

Should surrogates slam back at him just to see what he would do, which would in all probability be "news"? We'll see.

The funny thing is that you are perfectly comfortable with Hillary surrogates bringing up Obama's admitted drug use, the questions about his "Muslim" background, the distortions on his stated opinions on the Iraq War and even what video was taken down off a campaign web site five years ago.

But if even the obvious history that Bill Clinton has with his relationship with Monica Lewinsky and it being the ten year anniversary, it's to be framed as something Hannity would do. The problem is Bill Clinton. The problem with Hillary's campaign is that she has him on the trail as a surrogate trashing other candidates and wanting a free pass on an obvious Achilles Heel issue that people don't want to have to walk through again.

I think Obama and Edwards surrogates are a lot classier than Hillary surrogates, so you can rest assured that the Monica story will only be an issue for the Republicans to exploit if she gets the nomination...which she won't.

7. That would completely backfire on Barack.
Despite what happened back then, Bill Clinton still has high approval ratings. His approval rating was higher at the height of this "so called" scandal than Bush's are now. Many people really like Bill and thought that he was railroaded for something that was between a man and his wife. Barack would look completely weak and vindictive. This is political competition and they are all out to destroy each other to a certain extent. I think we should lighten up on all of our Dems.

Since a blow job is generally sexual.

But he could've just kept telling them to buzz off, instead of LYING about it. The LYING part is what pisses many Republicans off, not the whole sexual part.

But I don't fault him, I guess. You've seen Lewinsky, no man alive would admit to doing anything with that. ;)

109. Bull. The FRENCH, those socialists are angry at their President for marrying soon after a divorce.
At least he and his ex- had the honesty to DIVORCE.

Bill Clinton is morally depraved and I almost didn't vote for him in 1996 for that very reason. But they both went on TV and LIED. Bill is still as sex addict who put our beloved country through Impeachment Proceedings because he didn't give a damn about anyone but himself.

Wake up from partisanship and realize the ARROGANCE that runs rampant throughout the Clintonian DLC. Yes, it is important when you cheat on a spouse and then lie about it. It makes you a piss poor NATIONAL Security Risk. What will HRC's minions do in the future to cover up Bill's indiscretions? Because we all know that Bill is not cured of his sex addiction. No, "a blow job" is not an illegal invasion, but it's morally depraved of a married President. He's an embarrassment to our country.

Yeah, it's something that he should have resigned for and handed the reins over to Al Gore. We just want to remember "the booming economy" and forget about his disastrous NAFTA and Welfare Reforms. That's just selective memory, not the truth of all the DLC's deception of being "progressive." :(

BAD idea for a Democrat to bring it up directly.
However, what they should do if asked about it....

I think high road would be the best choice for the candidate.

Unfortunately, it also had impact on what Clinton was able to do or not at the end of his mandate, and who knows what he would have been able to do if he did not have had to be busy with that.

My only point is that, to my knowledge, the only Democratic candidate who talked about it until now was her, and nobody else.

...DU seems to be very eager to discuss this non-issue. It's the right-wing that constantly brings this up; why should Democrats keep bringing it up? I thought we agreed it's none of our business what goes on in the president's bedroom? (or where-ever it happened.)

104. But when it did "come up" Clinton should have resigned - we'd now have President Gore.
The arrogance and sense of entitlement of the Clintonian DLC and it's surrogates rivals only the RNC on the scale for *shamelessness.*

Here's a scary thought: TO WHAT EXTENT will HRC and her surrogates *sink to* in order to cover up Bill Clinton's future affairs?

Do you honestly think he's capable of being physically faithful to HRC? ... after Gennifer Flowers ... then after Monica Lewinsky?

Having worked within the Intelligence field, I can attest to the fact that those who grant high level security clearances don't care if you're homosexual as long as you can't be blackmailed. However, being unfaithful to one's spouse is a TRUE SECURITY ISSUE.

If HRC snags the WH, Bill Clinton is a valid "security risk." If he were SGT Jones instead of Bill Clinton, his marital infidelities would disqualify him for high level security clearances.

But what the hell! Anything for political royalty, right?

116. I know the Hillaryworlders would love this anniversary to just go away, but...
...it isn't.

Hillary has been busy rewriting history, but this event and anniversary is certainly not going away no matter how hard she cackles or cries.

Bill cheated on her. She stayed with him because she would be a nobody/footnote now.

Bill stretched the whole episode for a year when he could have been a man and admitted he did what he did at the start. Should we just expect more of this if he's back in the White House? My betting money says yes.

Just to flash back at this story:

Clinton, according to these people, has acknowledged that having a friendship with the 24-year-old Lewinsky looks odd, and in retrospect was unwise. But Clinton supposedly told friends the two became close in part because they shared stories about their turbulent family upbringings, the sources said. Lewinsky is the child of divorced parents, and Clinton grew up with an adoptive father who was an alcoholic and sometimes physically abusive.

Clinton has publicly denied having a sexual relationship with Lewinsky or encouraging her to lie about it. But he has repeatedly refused to describe in detail what kind of relationship they did have and has not addressed such issues as why he gave her a dress and other gifts, as Lewinsky said on the tapes.

102. Other...
because it's really ultimately trivial and unspeakably boring?

Because it was a moment when the US became the laughingstock of the world--not because the President had an affair, who gives a shit? Not even because he lied about it --first off, who wouldn't, and second, why was this even something he had to testify over? (Although, if you look up the etymology of the world "testify" it's pretty amusing.) What he did was sleazy, but not illegal.

We were the laughingstock of the world because a bunch of hypocritical prudes and right-wing grandstanders out for blood forced the government to shut down over it. Because all our "best political minds" instead of concentrating on real problems, were obsessed with stains on dresses and cigars.

As fads go, it had about as much substance as Pet Rocks and the Macarena--and did a hell of a lot more damage to the level of our political discourse.

And I don't blame Bill or Monica for that.

105. amazing, isn't it? . . . Bill Clinton gets impeached for a blow job, and . . .
Congress can't find the balls to impeach a president who has essentially diregarded the Constitution as "just a piece of paper," and violated it more times than we can count . . .

I'd suggest that someone give Bush a blow job so we can impeach him -- but there's a limit to "taking one for the team" . . .

Edited on Thu Jan-17-08 05:13 AM by ShortnFiery
But our "beloved" Bill Clinton couldn't "come clean" (LIED) because of this INSANE machismo that "Presidents never admit faults" ESPECIALLY those revealing infidelity to one's beloved spouse. That makes Bill one hell of a security risk.

No, Bill Clinton didn't commit war crimes or start a pre-emptive war, but if he wasn't such a self-important, pompous ASS, he would have resigned for the sake of "OUR PARTY." It's no surprise that The Clintons screwed over both Al Gore and John Kerry. They couldn't give a damn because it's all about THEM. If Bill Clinton would have loved "the American People" as much as he boasts, he would have RESIGNED rather than dragging us through Impeachment Proceedings - but it's all about him, Hill and their buds in the DLC.

NOW, no politician is held to ANY STANDARD WHAT SO EVER. I suggest that Bill Clinton cracked the door open (infidelity) so the BushBotBorg could storm through it with moral depravity galore. NO Politician is held to ANY STANDARD today - whether it be moral unfaithfulness to one's spouse, voting for an illegal invasion OR the commission of War Crimes. :grr:

We truly, as a party, MUST "get over" kissing The Clintons' political asses. They have pushed our party so damn far right, those who joke about The Democratic Party morphing into "republican lite" via the DLC Clinton Executive Branch rule, well, they're not that far off the mark.

108. The economy was on a roll which is directly linked to Presidential Approval Ratings.
Bill Clinton's mask has been ripped off a decade later to reveal the persona of an intimidating used car salesmen. No, the American People have seen all the subsequent DLC models and we're not buying it ... not even another "Clinton" model. It's the same old right-wing, triangulating DLC Executive Branch that we'll be ushering in for the 3rd time. Now that, IMO, is true insanity for anyone other than those representing the Investor Classes.
