This is a big deal/crisis in the republican race right now.

In South Carolina, Pro-Confederate Flag Group Airs Ads Praising Huckabee's Flag Stance -- And Hitting McCain
By Greg Sargent - January 17, 2008, 7:40PM
A pro-Confederate Flag third-party group is running new radio ads in South Carolina praising Mike Huckabee's pro-state's-rights stance on the flag issue -- and slamming John McCain over his repeated criticism of the controversial symbol.

"Mike Huckabee's stand is a breath of fresh air," say the ads, which are paid for by the Americans for the Preservation of American Culture. "Gov. Huckabee understands that all the average guy with a Confederate Flag on his pickup truck is saying is: He's proud to be a Southerner."

McCain has been dogged by the flag issue in South Carolina since his 2000 Presidential run; he's repeatedly denounced it, calling it a "racist symbol." There are two versions of the ad, one attacking McCain, the other attacking Romney, who's also condemned the flag. Listen to them both (the second starts roughly at the one-minute mark): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kggoIyEijME

1. Is he tying it all up with a brightly colored...noose?
Well, so much for that folksy, fried squirrel persona...is he over at the Wal-Mart at the white sale, shopping for new sheets?

Yee haw!!

So much for 'staying positive' I guess!

2. I saw word of this on HuffPost today. McCain loses to Romney in Michigan
even though Romney's a pastiched ninny. Now he's about to lose to Huckabee in South Carolina, and Huckabee's unstable.

There's a palpable violence to the way Huckabee talks, not only in relation to whatever rightwing kook group is backing him with this flag issue, but in general, when he speaks. Huckabee is the authoritarian small man, clever enough to invoke Scripture to advance his distortion of that Scripture, and to do it in a way that is socially and politically divisive.

I almost wrote "divisive and intemperate," but Huckabee's charm, such as it is, is to appear moderate and reasonable while nevertheless advancing an authoritarian agenda. IMO you can't advance an authoritarian agenda without some predisposition to violence.

I think the man is unstable.

3. I wonder how much this flag bullshit will rub off on the Democratic race.

Our candidates are going to get the question when they get to SC.

4. You're right - they probably will, knowing the craven media.
Please tell me that one day we can wake up and there will be reporters like Helen Thomas and Jim Lehrer instead of media buffoons like Wolf Blitzer and Brit Hume.

6. (Jesus, that is a terrific user name... is it from NAME OF THE ROSE?)
Yes, adsosletter, I think demagoguery is the word and you nailed it hard and deep. There is the whiff of the Inquisitor to Gov. Huckabee -- someone who rolls into a set of circumstances and limits all avenues of objection in the name of a straw-man logic.

I'm thinking it's no wonder you got this true to the bone when Mr. Lewis appears in your sig line.

8. Hi, Old Crusoe...
yeah...demagoguery seems to be a standard accompaniment to American politics, at some level, and especially in difficult times. It is what I consider to be the greatest internal threat to our freedom and democracy in any particular period, and especially in the situation we may well soon face.

I believe that American's have shown a resiliency in our history which will allow us, with intelligent leadership, to meet and overcome any difficulty we face; suffering may be guaranteed, as well as extreme personal sacrifice, but the outcome will be positive given the proper leadership.

It is the propensity of humans to fall prey to the temptation to scapegoat, to persecute, to accept loss of freedom for the illusion of safety, to surrendering their critical thinking to the will of demagogues which frightens me most.

It can happen here, and the temptation has been there at various periods of our history, and I think we are heading into a historical cycle ripe for it.

The user name is from a 10th century letter sent by Adso of Montier-en-der to Gerberga, queen of the Franks, answering her query as to whether or not the Viking raids being carried out along the French coast were the long-expected "pre-cursors of Antichrist," an eschatological scenario common to the middle ages.

Adso was considered an expert on the subject, and his reply is an inclusive, concise example of how people constructed the "Antichrist Legend" common to the middle ages, containing memes which continue to show up in today's eschatology even though the bible says very, very little about the Antichrist figure. If you're interested in his description just google "Adso's letter... ."

Anyway, I am working on a graduate degree in History and all of my undergrad work focused on how the lens of Christian eschatology functioned at various historical periods and settings.

:hi: :D

13. What a pleasure to read. Thank you. I will explore more later and have
bookmarked this thread so I don't lose the info.

Here's this: I read your posts in this thread and regard the range (impressive even beyond the expected command given your field of study) and then I read current dispatches from the Huckabee campaign, and I fully appreciate your association of the "memes continuing to show up in today's eschatology." i don't suppose the Huckabee campaign would own the slogan, "Precursor to the Anti-Christ," but the association has resonance just the same.

Good for you to be digging through the deep past to shine a light on the difficult future.

7. Nobody is keeping anyone from raising the Confederate flag in
their yard or in the back of their pickup truck. It's the Federal and State Government display of a object that is offensive to people whose forefathers were slaves. :dem:

11. The real Huckabee might win SC.
Which is OK news for us, but it's frightening. Huckster is showing how far he's willing to go to win.

I love humiliation on prime time. And he's gonna get sodomized.
