Bill Clinton rallied caucus goers inside 5 Vegas precincts?
Donna Brazille just said this on CNN. Can this be legal? He doesn't live in Nevada. So how can he have participated in this way? Anybody know? A DUer from Minnesota said candidates have been known to do this at caucuses, so maybe.

I am tired of the "big dog" . I am tired of the nickname.
I am tired of how involved he is. It is wrong for a former president to be so involved, attacking others, hanging with the Bush Family.

It is just wrong.

25. It is a matter of proper behavior.
It is wrong for him to be using his influence accusing people of tampering and such. He should NOT be in polling places, he is way too involved.

He should NOT be driving around NV with James Carville. By doing that he says to the rest of us he is being in our face.

3. Why would it be illegal? He's a regular citizen now.
To rally for a candidate is what supporters do! Just because he happens to be a former Prez doesn't mean a damn thing.

10. Because he's not a Nevada resident
I've only voted in primaries where you can't even carry a sign. It seems strange to me that somebody from another state can just go into a caucus and electioneer.

23. I 've never been to a caucus either, but I understand there are
a lot of speeches made by supporters of the different candidates. I honestly don't know if you have to be a resident to speak there, but somehow I doubt it.

4. Spouses of candidates can observe caucuses, yes.
Edited on Sat Jan-19-08 07:27 PM by VolcanoJen
As can local or statewide elected officials.

Credentialed caucus watchers of the campaigns may also attend to observe, as can credentialed members of the press. In Nevada, they adjusted the rules so campaigns could send 10 representatives instead of the orignal, agreed-upon 2 to each caucus.

I imagine Bill was a credentialed caucus attendee and that his attendance was legitimate. I haven't heard any reports of him actually organizing or participating in the caucus, which would seem quite inappropriate.

14. This was legal and legit in Iowa...
Edited on Sat Jan-19-08 07:34 PM by TwoSparkles
I'm not sure if the caucus rules are the same for Iowa and NV, but I know that
many Iowans were sent to NV--to help NV newbies learn the procedure.

So, NV might be the same as Iowa.

Obama showed up in my precinct, in Iowa. He was there, inside the door of our local
high school greeting people and generating excitement. It was really cool.

I believe it's ok if supporters, or the candidates themselves, make appearances at the
caucuses. John Kerry's brother showed up at my caucus site in 04--to do a little speech
in support of his brother.

I'm sure Bill just popped in to several caucus sites, to drum up support and I'm almost
positive that it's legal and appropriate.

I actually think this is a great PR tactic to do this! Caucuses are so fun and spirited.
There's so much conversation and discussion happening and everyone is so proud to visibly
support their candidate. I'm betting Clinton went inside the caucus sites and did his thing
and left before voting commenced. It's been reported that he visited several precincts, so
he most likely didn't stay after the doors were officially closed.

Bill Clinton's appearances were totally in line with the tone of a caucus.

I was taken aback when I heard it, but if it's the norm in caucus states, it is what it is.

20. Yeah, a caucus is pretty rolicking...
...it's a lot different than "voting".

I think candidates, or any sort of campaigning is against the law, near the voting sites.

Caucuses are entirely different. We gave speeches, we had people standing on chairs and
lobbying the entire room for their candidate.

Other candidate camps were trying to lure our people away--into other camps. It's just
good, clean, spirited fun---democracy in action.
