Should I Cry? Or Should I Fight?
Edited on Sun Jan-20-08 04:38 AM by Nutmegger
I choose to fight.

I can never admit defeat, because if I were to admit defeat I loose that spark of excitement within me that gets me to open up my checkbook, and gets me to travel to places like New Hampshire to volunteer for the Edwards campaign, and gets me interested in this primary season, the first primary season that I’m actually paying attention to what’s going on. It’s to admit that the candidate whom I deeply respect, admire and yearn to see head the highest office in this nation and lead this nation away from this horrid Bush Inc fade away into nothingness.

I can’t let that happen.

It’s hard not to break down, to shed tears of disappointment over these first primary defeats. I know it’s only three states, but still hard to watch. I was out and about all day yesterday and haven’t heard any political news until I turned on NPR in the car for All Things Considered. As I was driving, I kept imagining Andrea Seabrook saying “John Edwards has won the Nevada caucuses and has pulled an upset victory” but instead the real news poured in. When I reached my destination, I just sat there starring into the dashboard for ten minutes.

During my childhood, my family and I lived very modestly. Expensive Christmases were few and far between. No fancy gadgets. No this, or that. A few times a year we would eat out, and when we did that was a blast for me and I always made sure to be on my best behavior so as not to ruin the chance to go out again. Little did I know that our infrequent eat-outs had little to do with behavior and everything to do with money, and I would later learn that even the few times we went out my parents would sacrifice a little something from themselves. On a few occasions, being the curious kid that I was, I overheard my parents talking about money issues. I can recall vividly a conversation about not being able to pay the heat bill. Even cutting back on shopping and driving the car less, the heat bill was just too much. When you hear that sort of thing as a kid, it sticks with you. I remember I dug up a few measly dollars I had and put it in an envelope to give to my parents.

Later that year my father got laid-off, and with little savings that put a lot of strain on my mother while my father looked for work. It was a rough time for all of us, but we did get through it.

I certainly didn’t grow up poor, but did experience a few rough times. I can’t even being to image that somewhere in America there are people who don’t even know when they’re going to get their next meal, or kids going to sleep cold and hungry, or people who are living in a cold house because they can’t afford to heat their homes. God damn, this is the richest country in the world. With so much green and greed that passes the hands of these greedy bastards, the less fortunate are left in the dark. I walk into a grocery store and see that milk has gone up yet again, along with bread and eggs. Just when you thing the prices have stopped, it goes up again another nickel.

John Edwards based his platform on poverty. He didn’t have to do that; he could have gone with the other garden-variety topics that candidates choose to run on. He brought the issue front and center and he gives the people of the poor, the working poor and the middle class a much needed voice. He walked the picket lines and worked to rebuild New Orleans. He even announced his candidacy from the lower Ninth Ward (see “Tomorrow Begins Today” in my signature). As President, he would do everything in his power to make sure that those who have been ignored won’t be ignored any longer. I know it; I can feel it.

How can I give up on a candidate like that?

I can’t.

So I choose to fight.

I posted some pictures earlier. This one with his son Jack is my favorite out of the bunch.

1. Ah, Nutmegger! This is beautiful! I am going to do both.Cry and Fight!
Cry, because some in our national haven't got the sense to see what a tremendous gift they may be passing up in John and Elizabeth Edwards. In my opinion no other candidate equals John and no other candidate is actually speaking for America.I am crying because, whether by perfidy, ignorance, or fear,Nevada has rejected itself when it rejects John Edwards and that is just sad.I am committed to fight because John is the only candidate committed to fight for me.I can do no less for him.I pray the nation wakes up and fights for itself.God Bless us all.

5. You rock for sharing your story! I too was shaken by today at first
This is my first real presidential campaign and it is hard to take. I don't have past experience to help me find ways to cope. After being shaken initially by today I thought about it and reached the conclusion Nevada did not matter that much for Edwards. I talk about that in http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topics&forum=132 . Edwards lost Nevada because of a parochial issue, not because his message was rejected.

8. Beautifully said, Nutmegger!
I am so proud of John and Elizabeth. I'm proud of all the supporters who work hard for the campaign, and who are vowing to go on working hard. Like John.

I don't think the word "quit" is in his vocabulary. That's one reason I'm supporting him, and will continue to do so. Even though "conventional wisdom" seems to say that he can't win, that continued support is silly, that it's a lost cause.

As a young lawyer, John took on big, moneyed corporations...and won, against odds that would make most people give up before they started.

In 1998, he defeated a two-term incumbant, Lauch Faircloth, for the Senate; a race that few people initially thought he could win. Until he did.

In 2004, he ran for president, and although he didn't win, he he was on the Democratic ticket.

Quite a set of accomplishments for a son of a mill worker.

Since 2004, he's been walking the talk, establishing "College for Everyone" program in a high school in North Carolina and being a strong advocate for the poor and middle class.

And now, he's running for president.

John is a very smart man. He had to know the political risks of advocating for the poor and middle class, and taking on the lobbyists and special interests. He had to know the mainstream media is a part of those special interests. He had to know that saying he'd never negotiate with drug companies and insurance companies would make him powerful enemies. He had to know that not accepting money from corporate lobbyists would put him at a financial disadvantage.

He did all those things anyway.

How can I NOT support him?

34. One correction in your post.
Kerry/Edwards DID WIN the popular vote in 2004. Kerry/Edwards got 53% of the vote. Ohio election officials have been indicted for their roles in stealing the election.

Although Edwards is not my first choice ... he's a close 2nd, and is raising the bar on issues important to most Americans -- Republican or Dems.

11. Your fight has only just begun!
I was a kid when Truman won his race aginst the Wall Street hero, Dewey, and the public viewed Harry as being angry too. And I have to think that after Vietnam, the politicians figured out that big money won the campaigns. But, in this race especially, Edwards and Kucinich actually spoke against these interests. I think that many people like you have really started on a battle against this 'evil empire' of special interests that will still go on for many campaigns. So keep on plugging for your guy. I know I am!

12. Thank you for
sharing, Nutmegger. I remember frugal times also. We always knew when Dad was on strike (He was a Teamster, born and raised) by the fact we had Poor Old Man's potato soup (made with water) and when he wasn't, we had Rich Old Man's potato soup, made with milk. We never went without things we needed (that I can recall) but still, times were occasionally rough for my dad and mom with their six kiddos.

I believe John speaks from his heart and I also believe he is the right person to lead this country during these very trying times.

I, too, will fight for him to the end.

17. Ah, Nutmegger. I live in NC and wish I could go to SC this week to help fight
but my husband is facing hip replacement surgery on the 29th; our house burned down last August and we are fighting the insurance and mortgage companies; I am needed at home this week.

I sent two donations to the Edwards campaign last week. I can only hope that with the breaking news
of Obama's involvement in the Rezko federal corruption indictments and the Hillary dirty tricks in Nevada, maybe, just maybe, SC voters will wake up and say, "Wait a minute. What about our own native son?"

If the Dems pass on Edwards in favor of either Clinton or Obama, I fear, really fear, for the future of the country.

of hard work and more time to heal the wounds, but it is possible, and if it is impossible, then it will just take a lil longer. - to steal a quote : )

John Edward's message is more real to me too. Of course, the message is really about all of us but you know what I mean.
