Breaking: Hillary to get endorsement of Rev. Calvin Butts
On the heels of a Nevada result, where she won Latinos and women -- but not African-Americans -- Hillary Clinton will go to church at one of Harlem's most important black churches Sunday morning, Abyssinian Baptist.

Her campaign is focusing on the African-American vote ...as they head toward South Carolina.

Dr. Calvin O. Butts, III, is Pastor of the nationally-renowned Abyssinian Baptist Church in New York City and President of the State University of New York College at Old Westbury. His commitment to the enhancement of God’s kingdom on earth has manifested itself in his loyal attention to the daily activities and services of the congregation, as well as the pervasive impact of the church on community development initiatives, including homelessness, senior citizen and youth empowerment, cultural awareness, and ecumenical outreach.

The Abyssinian Baptist Church, led by Dr. Butts, is committed to moving forward in faith for the maintenance and expansion of its continuing Christian mission. Dr. Butts was one of the founders of Abyssinian Development Corporation (ADC), a comprehensive community-based organization that is responsible for over $300 million in housing and commercial development in Harlem, and he continues to help guide and support the daily operation of this not-for-profit organization. Dr. Butts was also instrumental in the establishment of Thurgood Marshall Academy for Learning and Social Change, a public intermediate and high school under the direction of ADC.

Dr. Butts is a native New Yorker. He spent a few years in the South, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from Morehouse College in Atlanta. He returned to New York and earned a Master of Divinity degree in Church History from Union Theological Seminary, and a Doctor of Ministry degree in Church and Public Policy from Drew University in New Jersey. He taught Urban Affairs and served as an Adjunct Professor in the African Studies Department at The City College of New York and Black Church History at Fordham University, and has given numerous lectures and speeches at colleges and universities across the nation.

13. That would depend...
on your definition of the word "great". Both Pataki and Guillani won....so I guess it's great for anyone wanting to win in an election.

23. So if he endorsed Huckabee and he won that would be great?
I don't get that logic.

2. Will this help her gain votes in SC?
Maybe. I don't see that happening after the results in NV and the polls in SC. And of course, it's hardly surprising that a FOB would endorse Hillary.

7. unfortunately- and I really find this disturbing- I think that
the vast majority of African Amerian voters will not vote for her on 2/5. I don't think she'll even get the majority in NY on that day. The dem party is splitting on racial lines. Time for people to recognize that.

8. I Have Refrained From Describing This Race In Racial Terms
If Senator Obama is to have a chance he must be seen as the candidate who happens to be black not the black candidate...

10. Yes, and he's certainly tried to be that
certain prominent people seem determined to paint him as the black candidate. I don't expect that to change.

15. It isn't that simple
It is appropriate that Obama tap into real support from the Black community which is fueled in some part by a desire to overcome racism and elect an African American who presumably can best personally relate to their very valid concerns. It is appropriate that his supporters argue, and they have, that his candidacy will cause a huge upsurge of newly registered Democratic voting Blacks. Obama's Gospel tour was intentionally an effort to identify with and connect with African American voters in large part. If you pay attention Obama's stump speech in South Carolina it is clear that Obama is not trying to blur his racial identity there where it is a legitimate large asset to him in a state where 50% of the primary voters are expected to be African American.

16. Obama has tried to keep race out of this. Others have chosen to use it,
hoping they will gain from it. Purposefully dividing the party to gain the nomination is despicable.

11. If Nevada's trend is any indicator, that's the way SC will go, too. Would that be considered...
...a 'special interest group'? Would women going for Clinton be one, too? Hmm.... Many issues complicating/or much too simplifying the way people choose their candidate.

14. Do you think that...
the vast majority of black voters will vote for Obama because he is black, or because they agree with him on issues. Would they vote for him if he was white? I'm sure there is excitement for a black person at the thought of a black president. As there is for me, being a woman and having a woman president. But....after the dust settles I think we will all vote for the person who can best serve our interests regardless of sex, race or son of a mill worker.

18. Calvin Butts is a total sell-out, bought-and-paid-for asshole!!!!!!
Not so nice, right Hillary backers?

Calvin Butts is actually one of the greater lights in our culture, not a sell out, not bought-and-paid-for. But I just wanted to give the Hillary people a sense of what they're doing when they attack endorsers in totally unreasonable and bone-stupid ways.

Does it feel dirty and stupid? It is.
