Iowa sees caucus bounce in voter rolls
DES MOINES (AP) — The record turnout at the Iowa caucuses has proved to be a boon for the state's voter registration rolls, with Democrats getting the biggest boost, state elections officials said Friday.
Secretary of State Michael Mauro, a Democrat and the state's top election official, said county auditors have processed about 52,500 registrations where voters switched parties. So far, 43,000 of those — nearly 82 percent of the total — switched to the Democratic Party, and 9,500 voters switched to the Republican Party, he said.
To participate in precinct caucuses, voters must be registered as either a Democrat or Republican, but they can switch registration on the spot, and Mauro said that happened a lot.
"County auditors have told my staff they anticipate making over 100,000 registration changes statewide when all is said and done," Mauro said.
Mauro said registration changes from the caucuses should be completed within the next 10 days.
The trend would add to what is already a Democratic edge in voter registration in the state.
