1. Even stupid GOP voters realized the rest of the field is even batshit crazier
than McCain, which is saying something considering how batshit crazy he is.

4. Naw, he was at the end of his rope round late October thru mid december...
and the he was let back in. He was flatlined on purpose while the others kicked each others ass.

5. 3 months ago folks were poking fun at John McCain
Like the Capitol Steps in Washington DC. They were singing "McCain's Campaign is Plainly Down the Drain".

6. the lack of unity behind any Republican Candidate and just overall
lack of support among most for any of the candidates. it allowed McCain to gather the various groups that support him to help win some states with the McCain haters spread out over other candidates.

8. As far as I can see
when McCain hit rock-bottom, he went back to his old way of doing things. Most of his new "Bush team" advisers and fundraisers were let go, he got back on the bus, and started to do the town hall meetings again in New Hampshire, which worked for him back in 2000. The press love him because he is the most accessible candidate in the race. Sometimes politicians try to be too clever. Just get the hard dull work done. Get the basics right, and build from there. I happen to think Hillary Clinton is very good at this.

Yes, we know a McCain presidency would be a nightmare, but the media would probably love it.

And, quite often, the MSM is all that seems to matter these days.

I say this as a bitter, twisted, Joe Biden supporter.

10. His stock is rising
because the surge is working. The media tells me so, on both accounts.

The other thing that happened was the Christian right went for Huckabee, this taking the wind out of both Romney and Giuliani.

12. check the polls: McCain was never as down and out as people seemed to think
Edited on Mon Jan-21-08 06:44 AM by onenote
McCain has polled nationally in the teens and twenties. He had a period where his numbers dropped, but he was still higher than either Romney or Huckabee during that period. Yet Romney and Huckabee zoomed to contender status, not on the basis of their national numbers, but on the basis of specific state victories. McCain, who along with Giuliani, has the greatest name recognition among the repub candidates, was well situated for a comeback if he could score a decent finish in a couple of state primaries, which he did.

14. The rest of their candidates are actually that bad.
Romney - Puts meth heads to sleep and makes babies cry.
Thompson - Is *actually* asleep.
Huckabee - Too crazy for most Freepers, let alone normal people.
Rudy - Oh, where to begin?
RAWN PAAHL - HUGH! I'M SERIES!!!!1!1

McCain almost wins by default because he's the only one of these fuckwits who still garners vague respect from the population at large.
