Obama campaign says it’s not behind robo-calls attacking John Lewis
Looks like robo-calls have become part of the Democratic presidential race in Georgia.

The Barack Obama campaign, under the name of Georgia director Eureka Gilkey, has just put out this notice to supporters:

“The Obama campaign in Georgia has received reports from residents in the metro-Atlanta area about automated calls criticizing Congressman John Lewis for not supporting Barack Obama for president.

“These kinds of attacks are misleading and divisive, and the Obama campaign has nothing to do with them. Congressman John Lewis is a hero whose courage and sacrifice have made this country more equal and more just, and all Americans owe him a debt of gratitude.

“We strongly condemn these phone calls and hope that whoever is responsible for them stops making these calls immediately.”

Automated message slams Lewis for backing Clinton

By AARON GOULD SHEININ
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Published on: 01/22/08

Automated telephone calls that criticize U.S. Rep. John Lewis of Georgia for backing Hillary Clinton for president were placed by the co-founder of an Atlanta phone-banking firm who said he dislikes the longtime congressman.

Lewis, an 11-term congressman, said the whole affair is the "strangest thing I've ever dealt with since I've been in elected office."

John Garst told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Tuesday that neither Clinton's campaign nor that of her top opponent for the Democratic nomination, U.S. Sen. Barack Obama, had anything to do with the calls.

"I want to make that abundantly clear," Garst said.

The so-called "robo call" urges listeners to call Lewis' Atlanta office and tell him to support fellow African-American Obama for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Garst, whose company's clients include several top Georgia Republicans and at least two Democrats, said the call was not intended to further the fight between the two Democratic candidates, despite the provocative racial subtext of the calls.

"I read a news story off the Drudge Report about John Lewis, who is my congressman, talking in essence that he didn't really care what his constituents thought about who he should support as president," Garst said. "He was going to do what he felt he should do."

7. Thanks
There were some in Texas, too, that led back to a smear artist who just hated Hillary. We have to be careful with this stuff in assigning responsibility prematurely.

9. Thanks for posting. What a bizarre story. Just moved to Georgia,
so this sort of thing is distressing. I think all robocalls should be outlawed.

Cracks me up. Cuz they believe it. Even though a 527 was busted for adds on behalf of Edwards in IA. Shocking. They probably said Hillary was the blame for that also.

How many more posts in this thread before Hillary is the blame for these calls too?

8. Anything Bill Clinton's can't do, Hillary can. She's just that powerful.
All the more reason to want her as the candidate.
