1. It depends upon the context--one is a possessive, one is not. n/t

4. Thank you LostinVA! I try real hard to be LIBERAL about grammar and punctuation, but . . .
Edited on Thu Jan-24-08 11:02 AM by patrice
you've got to draw a line, 'cause, if you don't, eventually no one will be able to understand anything.

Think how much $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ confused grammar and punctuation costs American businesses every day!!!!

23. That's part of why I care too; seeing and hearing abuses all of the time corrupts
Edited on Thu Jan-24-08 01:43 PM by patrice
my own usage and that affects the logic of the language, something we need to be diligent in protecting. So half the time, when I correct something, it's as much for my own benefit as anyone else's.

Have you noticed how bad the Media is getting? Constantly mis-placed modifiers, indefinite pronoun references, improper pronoun case, just to name a few problems.

The copy-edited and proofreading have gotten HORRIBLE. You used to RARELY see typos and grammar mistakes.

27. And newspapers! I keep having to double-check myself to see if it's me.
It usually isn't.

Sentence fragments everywhere and those freaking mis-placed modifiers!!! Everyone thinks something such as "Oh, they'll get it anyway." But that's wrong, especially when you're working in multi-lingual, English as a second language, environments.

11. You might want to specify that you're referring to the plural.
That's the one that people usually mess up.

Hillary = Clinton
Bill and Hillary = Clintons

Something of Hillary's = Clinton's
Something of Bill and Hillary's = Clintons'

18. We should have a "special sped-spell " section of the forum.. for those who don't spell very well.
this way, all those who are better than others, can just talk about the issues.

But WAIT!! Those distracted from the issues because of spelling errors may be considered easily distracted, so, wouldn't that be like "Some posts on DU sound like they are coming from the attention deficit disordered"? As it goes, then...those who see it that way, shall banish the spell-masters, aka "ADD'uers" to their own special part of the forum too.

Before you know it, we'll have a community of perfect people!

Oh, but WAIT!! Those that think they are perfect are flawed just by thinking that, so, OFF... to the special "flawless folk" section of the forum....

anyone left?

right, those that waste their time responding to those who pat their own backs. Looks like I'm banished then too...

must go find my "specially selected section".... off I go!

26. It really isn't anything about being better or anything like that.
Our language is built on a logic that is codified in its Grammar and Punctuation (and also certain Style issues). Yes, I know it's not a perfect logic, but it's all we've got and we NEED it, so some of us are into defending it from Chaos.

No one should ever feel put-down when they experience a correction. Believe it or not some of us are trying to help and we make mistakes too and I, for one, want to know when I've made a mistake.

28. I appreciate being corrected when I make a mistake.
I agree with almost everything you say.

My response was to the poster, regarding her comment on poor spellers and the learning disabled. It had a negative connotation and that's what inspired me to get creative in my post.

I hope our party learns soon how to face our issues without being negative.

21. No, they sound illiterate. Which is my point.
The human race is moving away from written language and toward a language that is either spoken or expressed in symbols. That's my thesis, anyway.
