Good News: 67% say Obama can unite America
Edited on Thu Jan-24-08 07:17 PM by Kurt_and_Hunter
Good News: 67% of Americans say Obama can unite America

Bad News: 66% of Americans say John McCain can unite America

(Surprising News: 55% say Hillary can unite America. No Republican besides McC is over 50%)

from the new NBC/WSJ polling. I don't have a link.

________________

On edit: Just to point up the folly of something as vacuous as 'unity' as a campaign theme... looking at these numbers one would assume that Obama versus McCain would surely unite the country. In reality, it could be the most divisive race in decades. (John 'uniter' McCain is the guy who said: "Barack Obama wouldn't know an RPG from a Bong" Let the healing begin!)

Don't be so sure, says I. He's been on the Daily Show plenty of times and is always likeable. Too bad he's a Republican.

16. I agree McCain is the most powerful opponent.
He has been in politics forever. He has all the Bush supporters and money in his pocket.
McCain knows how to sabre-rattle the patriotism thing too.

12. Yup. That was kind of my point. "unity" is an over-rated message
McCain hasn't done a thing to unite much of anyone, but he's seen as being as much a uniter as Obama, who talks of little else.

If people really wanted a uniter we would have elected a long series of uniters.

15. Why do so many people feel so highly of insane McCain just
blows my mind, He agreed with nearly all of Bush policies, other than giving lip service against torture and advocating for a few more troops in Iraq, he was in lockstep with the chimp.

7. There are a lot of "Americans" (about 32%) I have no desire to
"unite" with. They can go fuck themselves and sit around talking about what a great man * was when they aren't busy fucking themselves.

26. Instead a wall on the Mexican border, I wish we could wall off
30% of the country and let their ass have it. They can govern themselves, they can have a theocracy if they like and they can have the chimp as their little dictator and maybe then they'll be happy, I know I would.

17. "unity" isn't the problem. Lack of representation & a voice is the problem...
...the corporate chokehold on our gov't has shut "we the people" out.

I'd like to hear what Obama will do about that - BESIDES take $millions$ of their MONEY?

How does he intend to make the voices of the poor and homeless heard in Washington?

:hi:

We don't need to be united - we need someone to give us, the people, our voice back and take the power away from the corporations.

27. YES! :)
Unity is nice - but that isn't THE issue facing this country--other than we're united in having our needs ignored and our voices silenced by a corporate-run government. For instance, damn Harry Reid's penchant for telecom immunity. Did you see the post about how much $$$$$ Reid has gotten from the telecoms?

It certainly explains a lot about why he's pushing for their immunity. They bought him. Just like they're buying Hillary and Obama.

I'd like to hear what Obama intends to do about situations like THAT (again, besides take a boatload of money from those same corporations HIMSELF).

Puh.

Unity my patootie. Horse puckey. What we need is a FIGHTER!

22. What Obama said he was looking for is a working majority, maybe 60% (although hopefully more)
I think his plan is realistic, he has never counted on getting the right-wingers. I agree with him that the 50% + 1(which decreases as time goes on) is not where we should be if we really want to get things done.

24. Of course, I'm only guessing, but I think there'd be a much higher percentage of progressives
for him to appeal to if Dems had spent the last quarter century making their case and fighting for their cause. 25 years of pandering have gotten us where we are now, and I don't think more pandering will fix it.

25. I agree that pandering is bad, but I don't think Obama plans to do so
I think he said once, we can disagree, but still be agreeable about it. The problem now is people don't even view and consider the other peoples sides, or talk to them. If enough people do so, more people will see the good in trying out some progressive ideas... at least, I think in the matter of foreign policy, education... where people largely already agree their are large failings, and the Republicans are not the ones we should listen too.

health care will have to be pushed through more strongly, of course, without as much compromise, since that is something people are the most close-minded on.

23. The media won't let the Clintons even question Obama
They go bananas when either Hillary or Bill has the 'audacity' to question anything about Obama, or to 'hope' that the media would perform even a small part of their jobs in doing so themselves. The media, of course isn't going to do ANYTHING to even slightly taint Obama, any more than they would question the Bush administration's actions before/on/subsequent to 9/11. It is simply "Off Limits!" That's why Bill feels he has to take it upon himself, and I agree with all of his statements. They are SPOT-ON.

The media coddling and protecting of Obama will stop the SECOND Obama would get to a general election contest against he Republicans. It would be IMR - Immediate Media Reversal. "Wouldn't know an RPG from a Bong." won't be some nasty, win-at-any-cost, dishonest character assassination like everything Bill and Hillary say about anything. Oh no, that will be pointed, humorous and relevant criticism by the tough, adult Publicans.

34. that's right...
because this election belongs to the media..Obama is off limits until they are ready to nail him...huge stories and scandals they have collected from the beginning of his announcement to run are being held back purposely...this is definitely a concerted effort by the msm.
