Obama Wrong About D.N.C. Claim

January 22, 2008 12:00 PM

ABC News' Teddy Davis Reports: Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., inaccurately claimed Tuesday that the Democratic National Committee has defended his decision to launch a national cable buy reaching a substantial number of homes in Florida, a state which violated D.N.C. rules by scheduling its contest before Feb. 5.

"The DNC has consistently said that we have not broken that pledge," said Obama.

Obama's claim is not true.

"The DNC has not weighed in on the pledge because it was a pledge with the state party chairs from the four early states, not the DNC," DNC spokeswoman Stacie Paxton told ABC News.

While the Obama campaign has not been defended by the D.N.C., his campaign was told by Carol Fowler, the chairwoman of the South Carolina Democratic Party, that she did not consider a national cable buy to be in violation of the pledge made to South Carolina.

The Democratic Party chairs in Iowa, New Hampshire, and Nevada have not weighed in on Obama's national cable buy. Having already held their contests, the state party chairs in those three early states are deferring to the South Carolina Democratic Party.

Florida is holding its Democratic and Republican primaries on Feb. 29. In order to punish Florida for violating D.N.C. rules, no delegates will be awarded in the Democratic contest.

11. The answer is the SC DNC have the last word.. AND they gave it.
That was the rule that the DNC implemented. That the early states have a say on wheter candidates uphold their engagement not to campaing in Michigan and Florida.

The Obama campaign checked with SC chairwoman (the last state still upcoming) and they got the green light.

Now TAKE THOSE LIES AND STUFF THEM. DESPERATE PIECES OF SHIT.

4. Campaign manager David Plouffe said Obama has no plans to campaign in Florida.
"We made a commitment to the early states," he said. "The second point is there are no delegates at stake, so we will not be campaigning in Florida."

No delegates at stake as agreed to by all three candidates.

No amount of excuses by the Hillary camp can change the reasoning behind that.

7. They have TV ads running in FL, They are campainging there.
They have permission from the SC Dem party head to run those ads but to claim they are not campainging there is a lie.

8. That could be huge. (Has the DNC said that a national cable buy
would violate limitations previously agreed to?)

Also, what about seating the Florida's convention delegates, even though it was previously agreed that that wouldn't happen?

13. this happened a week ago and is a non-story. DNC is not involved in the matter.
It wasn't campaigning and it isn't campaigning AND they haven't broken any of the rules. So there is absolutely nothing more to say.

14. Hillary is just mad
that she didn't do it first. None of the states are complaining and yet they still harp on this; sounds whiny and desperate to me. Especially, considering she's going to blow Obama out in the Florida Democratic Popularity Contest.

17. So the DNC spokeswoman is lying?

"The DNC has not weighed in on the pledge because it was a pledge with the state party chairs from the four early states, not the DNC," DNC spokeswoman Stacie Paxton told ABC News.

While the Obama campaign has not been defended by the D.N.C., his campaign was told by Carol Fowler, the chairwoman of the South Carolina Democratic Party, that she did not consider a national cable buy to be in violation of the pledge made to South Carolina.

16. Why do they lie? Because it works.
There are many, many people right here at DU who believe there is absolutely no way to target advertising to a specific audience.

Even though other candidates have advertised nationwide and not had ads shown in Florida, those who defend the Obama campaign are completely convinced that there was no choice - the ads MUST be aired in Florida or nowhere at all.
