CNN's Jack Cafferty asks: "Is their Room for Al Gore in the Race?"
Room for Al Gore in the race?

FROM CNN’s Jack Cafferty:

In many ways, it’s been a strange campaign up to this point. But it could get a lot stranger.

Consider this: What if we go through the Florida primary and Super Tuesday and the race between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama remains as tight as it’s been? For the primaries, Democrats have the same rules in every state: delegates are awarded in proportion to the vote — meaning no winner-take-all. If Clinton and Obama continue to split the vote in many states, it’s possible we could get to late spring or early summer and neither candidate would have enough delegates to secure the nomination.

And that’s assuming they get that far without destroying each other with their increasingly nasty bickering. There just might be an opening for someone else to step in and unify the party. Oh, you know, like say maybe Al Gore.

Gore insists he won’t run despite a movement called “draft-Gore-dot-com” that’s calling on him to “transcend politics as usual and bring real hope to our country and to the world.” As recently as last month, the former vice president said he has “no plans to be a candidate.” But being a politician he added, “I see no reason to rule it out entirely.”

Also, it’s worth noting Gore has not backed either Clinton or Obama so far, and a recent report indicated that an endorsement by Gore is looking less likely. Former advisers suggest the Nobel Prize catapulted Gore to a new national and international standing that could possibly be tarnished by taking sides in the primary battle.

Here’s my question to you: If the Democrats have trouble picking between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, should Al Gore consider entering the race?

Tune in to the Situation Room at 4pm to see if Jack reads your answer on air.

7. Pretty much
It makes me respect him even more, though.

Times are progressing, however, and in the future a pro-gay marriage stance may not be as politically harmful as it is today.

11. Why would Gore come out on this ...at this point...unless he's considering running?
Edited on Fri Jan-25-08 06:40 PM by KoKo01
It's kind of odd that a Nobel Peace Prize winner takes a stand on an issue that is on the "back burner" if he isn't considering running.

Al Gore didn't need to support "Gay Marriage" to be considered in a World Forum for Climate Change.

 I think he was putting "teaser stuff" out there to "test the waters" since the Barack/Hillary
Battle is going into HIGH WARP SPEED...and Gore is thinking if stuff goes bad for them....he might have a "shot at it."

13. Yes...it's "how he feels in his heart" but why would he put this out there..if he isn't running?
Gore has invested EVERYTHING into his Global Climate Change Issues...as his "cause of life." Why suddenly put his VOICE OUT THERE...in favor of Marriage Rights for GLBT folks?

He's "testing." It's all about POLITICS...and Gore is "testing the waters"

8. That issue alone would peel off a major chunk of Hillary's support.
Some people are supporting her simply because they don't like Obama's association with Donnie McCloset and some other homophobes. This despite the fact that Hillary, in all probability, has no intention of undoing the homophobic legislation her husband signed in the 1990's. Give them a candidate in favor of equality who can WIN, and they're gone.

Gore/Edwards ? I could see that.

But because of the front loaded primary scam, I don't see Al or anyone else jumping into the race at this point. His only chance now is at a brokered convention.

And unfortunately, we're all worse off for it, never able to realize the potential of what a Gore presidency could have been :(

14. GORE ...NEVER wanted to RUN as a Candidate....with Russert/Tweety and the rest....
he's "testing the waters" to see...if no candidate wins the majority after "Super Tuesday" ...Gore is testing waters...saying..."I'm HERE! I'm more PROGRESSIVE THAN THE REST OF THEM... Take a LOOKIE HERE!

If you like him or not...he's a Politician...he would never run the MSM "Dog & Pony Show" to get elected...but he KNOWS in his HEART that the only way he can get FRONT BURNER ISSUES out there ..is to "test the waters."

He's laying out a campaign...Just in case...Just in case...Just in case.......

19. I DO belive, if he were litterally drafted, he would accept
if there was a brokered convention, if he was miraculously picked as the candidate he would accept. that is not going to happen.

Democrats have a brokered convention; Al is drafted. :bounce:

My nightmare? What if the pukes have a brokered convention and Jeb Bush gets drafted, or is chosen as someone's VP? :scared:

29. I wish
I don't have a candidate yet, but if I have to pick one, I suppose it will be Edwards. I don't like what Hillary and Obama are doing to each other. I've hoped from the beginning that Gore would run. I don't see it happening, but Gore/Edwards is a winner. I'm not sure any of the others can do it. I'll vote for whomever is picked, but I won't like it, and I'm afraid we're putting ourselves in the position of losing yet again.
