Sleazy Fundraisers? How About Norman "Hillraiser" Hsu?

Clinton Donor Fails to Appear in Court Again

The mystery of Norman Hsu, the wealthy Clinton donor who turned out to be a fugitive from justice, took a bizarre twist yesterday when Mr. Hsu, who skipped out after pleading no contest in a California fraud case 15 years ago, disappeared yet again.

Mr. Hsu, who turned himself in to the authorities last week and posted $2 million in cash as his bail, was to have appeared in Superior Court in California at 9 a.m. yesterday to hand in his passport and ask that his bail be reduced.

His disappearance added to an already embarrassing episode for Democrats, and especially the presidential campaign of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York, which had enlisted Mr. Hsu as a “Hillraiser” — a major bundler of donations from others. But last week came the revelation that Mr. Hsu was a fugitive, having skipped out on a California sentencing hearing related to a business fraud case and moved back to Hong Kong.

3. Hillary returns $850K in Hsu related donations
According to Federal Election Commission records, a Norman Hsu -- with apparel-related business names and addresses listed in New York and California -- contributed $260,000 to political parties, most since 2004.

Recipients included the Democratic Party and Democratic U.S. Sens. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., Barack Obama, D-Ill., Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., John Kerry, D-Mass., and Edward Kennedy, D-Mass.

Hillary Clinton Returning $$

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's presidential campaign said Monday it will return $850,000 in donations raised by Democratic fundraiser Norman Hsu, who is under federal investigation for allegedly violating election laws.

Clinton, D-N.Y., previously had planned only to give to charity $23,000 she received from Hsu for her presidential and senatorial campaigns and to her political action committee, HillPac.

The FBI is investigating whether Hsu paid so-called straw donors to send campaign contributions to Clinton and other candidates, a law enforcement official said Monday.

"In light of recent events and allegations that Mr. Norman Hsu engaged in an illegal investment scheme, we have decided out of an abundance of caution to return the money he raised for our campaign," Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson said in a statement Monday night. "An estimated 260 donors this week will receive refunds totaling approximately $850,000 from the campaign."

Wolfson said the Clinton campaign also will vigorously review its fundraisers, including thorough criminal background checks, in the future. "In any instances where a source of a bundler's income is in question, the campaign will take affirmative steps to verify its origin," he said.

Though credit for not firing wildly taking out other Democrats like Carol Mosley Braun on this one.

Hsu Steered Major Fundraiser to Obama
Campaign Acknowledges Link to Democratic Donor Who Is Now Under Arrest

Before becoming a major bundler for Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's presidential campaign, disgraced Democratic donor Norman Hsu helped host a 2005 California event for Barack Obama's political action committee and introduced the senator from Illinois to one of the biggest fundraisers for his presidential bid.

Federal Election Commission records show that Hsu gave $5,000 to Obama's Hopefund PAC in connection with the fundraiser and that people publicly identified with Hsu and his companies gave an additional $19,500 to the PAC in 2005 and 2006.

10. Of course I knew Obama had taken money from him too, duh.
The point is: Glass houses and all that. Ya know, hypocrisy?

A larger point is that she differentiates between Norman Hsu and Rezko while throwing around loaded words like "slum lord".

What she was really saying is that Obama is "from the slums" and still connected with that kind of dirty black man life -a slumlord in the city. It is subtext.

THAT is the slime she was applying. She is smart enough to know she has her own fundraising skeletons, so she just used it to get out the "slum" idea.

12. And we wonder why the general public hates politics?
With all this $$$ flying around, it's little wonder that the average American 1) doesn't believe her/his vote counts anymore, and 2) doesn't really give a shit about how easily our candidates are bought and sold.

Pathetic. On EVERYBODY'S part.

13. Yes. That's why I think Hil's "Slum lord" comment was said as subtext.

14. "Slum lord" is usually subtext for "Jew"
Edited on Fri Jan-25-08 05:45 PM by aquart
Not "this black presidential candidate grew up in the slums."

To say you are reaching with your "subtext" wouldn't begin to cover this desperate attempt to continue sliming the Clintons with the charge of RACISM.

I guess tomorrow we'll find out how well it worked.

And maybe you could prepare a list of word that caring Americans will never use again to protect Obama's delicate sensibilities. Or does that mean he's black and raised in the slums, too?

Oh, dear lord, YOU GOT YOUR MORONIC TALKING POINT FROM PAT BUCHANAN? Wow. Definition of shameless.
