Bill Clinton: John McCain and Hillary are 'very close'
Posted: 06:45 PM ET

(CNN) — If Hillary Clinton and John McCain become their party's presidential nominees, the general election race is likely to be a love-fest.

At least according to Bill Clinton.

Campaigning in Spartanburg, South Carolina, Friday, the former president brushed aside suggestions his wife would prove to be a divisive nominee for the Democratic Party, pointing out how she has successfully worked with Republicans in the Senate — including one of the current GOP presidential candidates.

"She and John McCain are very close," Clinton said. "They always laugh that if they wound up being the nominees of their party, it would be the most civilized election in American history, and they're afraid they'd put the voters to sleep because they like and respect each other."

The comments may not be welcome by the McCain camp — which yesterday faced fire from several of its rivals for winning the backing of the New York Times — a longtime archenemy of conservatives.

Sens. McCain and Clinton last met publicly at an ABC debate earlier January, when presidential candidates of both parties shared the same stage. The two were seen exchanging pleasantries, and a Clinton side said she told the Arizona senator he’d done a “good job” staging a comeback in New Hampshire. He asked that she say hello to Bill Clinton for him.

5. lol, you don't miss the obvious point
It's as if people who worked in the Senate together are required to dislike all people from the "other party"

20. Yeah, I don't understand all the 'kill the republicans'
attitudes. I see this as a big divisive problem with some democrats. I realize that the hatred for Bush has a lot to do with it, but if anything is to get done in this country, there has to be some civility between the parties.

I think it's only on DU that such hatred, and myopic views exist. I don't see it in my everyday life...

7. IOW Clinton would not attack a repub like he does a fellow Dem
This is what I've been afraid of all along. All bill's tough talk will disappear after she gets the nomination - but the pubs will trash her like they've been doing for the past ten years.

22. Me? I have no second choice. I am in with Edwards to the convention
for this very reason.

I *WAS* a koolaide-drinking RW freak until I woke up amd started paying attention. I didn't even pause at center when I realized how badly I had been lied to -- I went straight to left of left.

I am simply not interested in even entertaining either of the annointed two.

15. see
Even though i've been very critical of Bill the past few weeks, this one i like.

I think it's more a shout out to the GOP, that hey McCain is a big Clinton fan. Something to even infuriate them more about McCain.

17. I hope that the people who have criticized Obama...
for wanting to work with the other side will also criticize Clinton for saying almost the same thing.
