Interesting. My father is convinced Obama is a Muslim.
He said because of the Koran stating that if one's father is a Muslim then he/she is a Muslim. He said that if Obama converted that there should be a death sentence from his former religion. He is a conservative Democrat. He doesn't like Hillary or Edwards, and said if given a choice, he'd go with McCain. (Dad loves Lieberman, so I'll forgive him)

What do you think? (I disagreed with him, as a Edwards supporter)

1. You say he's a Lieberman fan?
I would trounce your father in a wrestling match and take your place as the new head of the family tribe.

No offense of course. :P

But seriously...tell your father to read up a little more on the modern tenants of Islam and Senator Obama's past in particular.

3. Obama is what he says he is.
We should all have the right to define our own identity. Obama says he is a Christian, so he is.

But even if he were a Muslim, which he is not, so what? Shouldn't a Muslim have just as much right to be president as anyone else, including a white man, a woman or a Morman? I thought that's what this country is supposed to be all about.

Why would a non-Muslim believe something based solely on a passage from the Koran?

7. I was talking on IRC with a long time friend and he shocked me...
...when he said he "didn't like" Obama's middle name. He couldn't really explain it, either. We were discussing how NASA would fair in the event of an Obama vs Hillary Presidency (because Hillary applied for NASA, and NASA was notoriously sexist at the time, I personally felt she had a soft spot for that administration; but that's another discussion! She is the only candidate that I know of that actually discusses their view on NASA/Space at least).

But it shocked me because it's just such a silly thing to give a crap about. And this is an intelligent guy. He's not very political, and that might explain it, but it was still quite unexpected.

22. I hate to break it to you, but he's not such an intelligent guy. If he
"dislikes" a name and doesn't know why, he is either stupid or not telling the truth. My guess is he knows why he doesn't like the name - he just didn't want to admit it: bigotry.

10. Depends on how much you care about your fathers opinion and if he votes or not
When your fishing, you have to throw back the little ones.

Remember, there will always be 26% that love GWB and the Republicans and no amount of truth will set them free.

13. I have a few questions for you.
1. WHAT is a conservative Democrat?

2. What does your father like about Lieberman?

3. Can't you explain to your father that, as in all religions, there are very devout strict followers, and there are also those who aren't. Like some strict Jews who use special dishes for certain religious celebrations, will Never eat pork, and would disown any child who choses to marry a non Jew. Obviously since Barack is still very much alive, daddy must not have been a very strong Muslim.

15. Tell him that conversions are not unknown in the Muslim world
and that they are taken very seriously. In some countries, like Afghanistan, converting away from Islam carries a death sentence.

Tell him that, if anything, he needs to respect Obama's courage in converting to Christianity.

(My dad was a nut when it came to politics, too. He did vote for Kerry in 2004, the last vote he cast. We always just agreed to disagree.)

In our family, we usually do not talk about politics, sex, or religion. Nobody is going to change anybody's mind anyway.

Everything else is OK.

If Obama hasn't said he's Muslim, then he's not. It's as simple as that.

What does he think the party stands for? What does he think he's saying about himself when he describes himself as a Democrat?

Romney is one of those Funny Christians (whatever that means) - he's going to vote for McCain if he's the Repuke nom, but he did say he'd vote for Edwards if any of the other Repukes are on the ballet.

26. Interesting in that it doesn't matter what Obama thinks, or what we think
about his conversion to Christianity - it is what fundy Islamic radicals think. Or even what the Muslim world as a whole thinks.

To some of them, converters from Islam are worse than Kuffar non-believers.....

I read an article musing on the possibility of a future death Fatwa being put out on an eventual President Obama because of his conversion from Islam - that would complicate foreign affairs somewhat when you think about it!

So in this regard your Dad is not so far off.

Because he apparently believes that every line of the Koran is the gospel truth.

31. Tell him this is America
Edited on Fri Jan-25-08 09:30 PM by junofeb
And Americans get to be whatever we want. I'm sure most of us are no longer the exact denomination or even religion as our elders. Am I still a puritan because some fore-father was? My dad was agnostic. And I am pagan. You can't make someone something by edict, you just are. If Obama is a professed christian then he is not a muslim. To believe that is to bow to the very forces of fundamentalism that would distort and destroy the constitution.

In other words, 'it don't work like that here', our ancestors came to America to get away from that deterministic shite.
