Clinton strategists believe racial fallout has tagged Obama as "the black candidate"
-snip-

A new McClatchy/MSNBC poll holds warning signs for Obama. He leads Hillary Rodham Clinton in South Carolina, but his support among white Democrats fell in one week from 20 percent to a mere 10 percent after race became more of an issue in the campaign.

Blacks comprise large portions of the Democratic electorate in Deep South states, and they could help Obama win a handful of primaries, including South Carolina's. Indeed, after the results are in Saturday night, he's heading to Macon, Ga., and then on to Alabama on Sunday for campaigning.

But the more Obama is seen through a racial lens, the more it might hamper him in other, bigger states, especially those where voters might be unaccustomed or unwilling to support black candidates.

-snip-

Her strategists deny any effort to stir the racial debate, but they say they believe the fallout has had the effect of marking Obama as "the black candidate," something he has worked to avoid.

6. Support of white Democrats dropped 8% for Hillary in the same week
Edited on Sat Jan-26-08 03:50 AM by jackson_dem
The week Obama lost 10 points among whites Hillary lost 8 as well. Edwards gained 12. They suffered for acting like children during the debate. The difference is Obama is at 73% among blacks so it hides his weak showing among whites.

All of the above explains this week. The overall picture is a result of both paying a price for the racial flap between them. One benefited in the short term, the other in the long term. Hillary tanked among blacks, Obama among whites. Guess who is fucked on Super Tuesday if this doesn't change?

8. Obama can't have it both ways..
Edited on Sat Jan-26-08 03:49 AM by Tellurian
You can't play the race card against one ethnicity and expect the rest of the diverse ethnic population to support you. Not when your running for the job as president of "all" the people. It doesn't work that way. This is not a surprise at all and totally expected of a not ready for Prime Time candidate.

4. wow
This has been discussed to death already. I wish we could move on from this race thing. Why don't we start by not talking about it here on DU? I would really like to move beyond this thing as i'm sure lots of others would. I'm not trying to be rude but why do you keep bringing up this racial divide? We already know that billary is painting obama as the black candidate. It doesn't make me like them more, respect them more, it just leaves a bitter feeling in me. This news really doesn't help anyone. Its very depressing. It just proves that some white ppl aren't ready for a black president and the democratic party which is supposed to be a party of inclusion is just as bad as the repugs in many respects. It makes me lose faith in the democratic party. It made me lose faith in Billary (used to be a staunch proud supporter of them). It makes me lose faith in americans. It upsets me deeply. This is something we should not be proud of, Obama's fall in the white support is not something you should be PROUD OF. It seems clearly you are. This coming from someone who is not black but half hispanic (you'd think I'd love Hillary huh? nope it just makes me sad).

7. Everyone will be talking about it tonight. This will be the story for the next few days
You guys are unrealistic if you think no one is going to look at exit polls showing Obama at 75% with blacks, 10-20% with whites and Edwards at 40% with whites and 4-7% with blacks and not connect the dots. Hillary is in the middle between the two extremes.

10. you're obsessed with race
THERE YOU GO AGAIN. YES the media is going to talk about it, But why do you insist on talking about it over and over again? If the media jumped off a bridge would you? Seems so. I know you LOVE this racial talk, you'd love seeing Obama go down, that much is clear. But your incessant talking about this race thing is annoying. You're so obsessed.

we're not getting bitch slapped b/c we're prepared for the worst. We didn't even think we'd get this far. However, if you think billary is going to win come November... All i've got to say is, look how the audience LOVED it when Romney pointed out he can't imagine Bill in the white house w/ nothing to do. The media loved it, the audience loved it, and i'm guessing a whole lot of americans loved it. The chance of Billary winning in November is very slim. So I think you should start preparing for your bitchslap.

Yes, but betting you can't.

This race talk has been beaten to death. What does it accomplish to talk about it over and over again?. It just makes Billary look sleazy IMO. If you want to keep talking about it fine, but realize that its going to backfire on your guy, oops girl in the end. I'm guessing you won't be wanting to keep this racial divide in the news if Billary is the nom, that would be BAD news for the party, even WORSE news as far as getting black ppl to turn out the vote for them. Its in your best interest to let it drop actually, so go on, play it to death and watch what happens. I'll be laughing about it in the end.

33. Obama may be tied up with the Rezko Trial
every news organization is thankful to Senator Clinton for making the Rezko Trial known on National tv and Obama's ties to the "slum landlord" Rezko..

This is breaking news out tonight:

BREAKING: ABC News Reports $100,000 From Rezko That Obama Hasn't Returned/Given Away

Fri Jan 25, 2008 at 06:53:21 PM EST

Sen. Obama wrote letters to city and state officials that helped secure $14 million for Rezko in taxpayer money.

This I believe will be VERY problematic and the reason why the Rezko case will develop into devastating repercussion for Obama.. No charges have been filed against Obama as of yet, but seeing his involvement is much deeper than originally thought, I don't believe he's going to skate free once the Rezko case is fully investigated.

then his campaign ran with it because they know SC is crucial to his viability as a candidate. They took the easy way out. Rather than build support from the inside out they polarized their support aimed strictly at AA.

20. No. The Clinton campaign is running a Lee Atwood Southern strategey
and this business of her strategists leaking this shit is simply more proof. Why the fuck is his bringing out Oprah- whose audience is chiefly WHITE, starting anything? It's not. The Clintons are going to suffer blowback. Hell, they're already suffering it. And it will lead to a loss in November. The only good thing about that is they'll no longer be anything but scorned and derided by the party.

31. You can tell this lie as often as you like
And plenty will believe it because the repetition of a lie works wonders, as Hitler found.

But it still won't be true. The race-baiting was begun as a deliberate tactic by Obama's campaign because they feared Clinton popularity in the black community.

I'm sure there will be books written justifying your version. They won't be true, either.

Now you can go back to lying.

30. They WISH! Here's how HRC's hero "divided and conquered" with Nixon's Southern Strategy:
http://www.aznews.us/it_is_time_to_demythologize_goldwater_by_telling_the_truth,_goldwater_was_a_racist.htm

It is Time to Demythologize Goldwater by Telling the Truth, Goldwater was a Racist

"You start out in 1954 by saying, "Nigger, nigger, nigger. By 1968 you can't say 'nigger' -- that hurts you. Backfires. So you say stuff like States' Rights," — Lee Atwater.

*Goldwater was the Champion of "States' Rights," Code for Anti Civil Rights

The best thing that ever happened to the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s is Barry Goldwater lost his bid to become president of the United States by a landslide.

If Goldwater had won, the United States would not have Civil Rights and equal justice for all. Blacks would still be riding in the back of City of Phoenix buses and forced to use their own restrooms. The Orpheum and Herberger Theatres, Chase Field, and US Airways Center would all have two entrances. Front grand entrances for whites. Back dark small doors for Blacks to use.

---------------

It seems that, HRC, the former "Goldwater Girl" and ex-young college republican President is coming back to her roots? :nuke:

32. The dislike of Clinton among many Dems, independents, and Republicans would cost her in the GE.
Clinton has more negatives in a general election than Obama has. The hostility toward Hillary is not based on her being a woman. It has been built up for the past fifteen years because she is a Clinton.

If Clinton is the nominee, that would give the Republicans a good chance to steal another election.

We are not much better off with Obama. His "hands across the table" approach to dealing with the Republicans is of a similar ilk to Pelosi's "impeachment is off the table" pronouncement. Tell the "enemy" up front that you will do nothing to seriously oppose them (not even try), and watch the right-wing laugh and continue "business as usual".

The only candidate to confront the seriousness of the problems in this country, and propose workable solutions that could make a difference is John Edwards. Polls have shown that Edwards is the only candidate who could beat any Republican in the general election.

John's message resonates with the people who are independent or Republican, and who's support will be needed to win in November.

Edwards has everything going for him: The right platform, the right message, a great personality, and the ability to connect with people. It would be a shame if the Democratic party squabbled its way into another defeat.

I want to win the presidency in 2008 and that is why I support John Edwards for president.
