Obama: "I need you to grab Cousin Pookie to vote. I need you to get Ray-Ray to vote."
Has Obama lost his mind? "I need you get grab Cousin Pookie to vote. I need you to get Ray-Ray to vote."

If that's not playing to Black stereotypes, I don't know what is. And this is why I, as a Black woman, cannot and absolutely will not support him.

Obama walks a tricky racial line

By CHARLES BABINGTON, Associated Press Writer
Sat Jan 26, 1:49 AM ET

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Barack Obama is walking a tricky racial line, trying to excite black support in the South without getting tagged as "the black candidate" and scaring off anybody else.

At a spaghetti dinner in the basement of a black church this week, he told a cheering crowd the civil rights movement started from the bottom up, with marches and boycotts. "That's how change comes," he said, linking black civil rights to his own campaign slogan.

But here in South Carolina, which has its Democratic primary Saturday, he also says over and over that color doesn't matter.

-snip-

The racial minefields haven't kept him from having fun with heavily black audiences in South Carolina this week.

The Harvard Law School graduate sometimes playfully breaks into vernacular, which seems to amuse him and his audiences greatly.

"I need you to grab Cousin Pookie to vote," he told a crowd in Kingstree on Thursday. "I need you to get Ray-Ray to vote."

-snip-

After fielding questions from an audience of about 200, Bill Clinton called on a black man standing near the stage. The man said he was a pastor and told Clinton that "black America is voting for Obama because he's black." He said Democrats are in a dangerous position because if Obama wins the nomination, voters will elect a Republican in November. "They're not ready for a black president," he said.

Several black audience members nodded and said, "That's right."

"I have to tell you I hope you're not right," Clinton responded.

He said that despite the "mean things" said about him "in the Obama camp this week," he would support the Illinois senator if he is nominated.

12. That's his sick way of trying to connect to the Black masses in SC....And it plays right into the
stereotypes that every Black person knows someone named Pookie or Ray-Ray.

And as a Black person, I know NO ONE named Pookie or Ray-Ray.

But that's the stereotype out there, and Obama played right into it.

56. Just as he disgraced Black America during the debate with the dance comment.
Obama is keeping sterotypes alive and killing hope with these type comments.

I am now and have always been a Hillary supporter. My main reason for choosing this white woman over this black man is because I value experience on the national level. I know about most of her skeltons; I know only of one of his. He is human, so there are more to come. For this reason, I no longer want him to be VP. I still want Edwards as Attorney General.

159. Tim Russert asked Barack how he felt about Bill Clinton being called the "First Black President" by
Maya Angelou. (I'm paraphrasing all of this, but it's the gist of what went down at the debate)

Barack didn't have a problem with that, but said he might have to challenge Bill to a dance contest to see if he's REALLY a "brother." :)

He was poking fun at stereotypes. It was a joke. It was funny. And it was a wonderful light moment in a contentious debate.

Edited on Sat Jan-26-08 01:00 PM by goclark
If we are talking to a gathering composed of African Americans that is exactly what we would say!

That is NOT using us, that is helping US to vividly relate to what he is saying.

"Cousin Ray-Ray" means the cousin that each one of us has that has either never voted before or is too busy running the streets to VOTE. "Ray-Ray" is not a name for a 50 year old cousin. Ray- Ray is a name used in the last 10 -15 years. It's more a modern day nick name.

Cousin "Pookie" means she is a nice sweet cousin that probably is about 60 years old (that name was popular then) that is so busy taking care of "Uncle John" that she hasn't taken the time to vote.

He is saying to that generation to go find a Care giver for "Pookie" so that she can VOTE period.

African Americans speak ENGLISH, but we also speak at least two other "languages" that are generational and that was what he was doing.

Sorry that I have to stop my post. I have to go and call my own cousin Pookie to see if I will need to pick her up to vote in the CA Primary. She takes care of her mom that has Dementia.

in Alabama some time ago.

ALL candidates play to a certain "mode" where there are. Bill in SC; I wonder why? Huckabee talking conferderate flag in the south and religion; I wonder why.

EVERY CANDIDATE panders to some extent.

A self hating black man.
Its sad that negativity among some black people could cost Obama the election. Even more sad that it came from a pastor. He doesn't help his community with that kind of hopelessness.

20. First of all, I am not a Black man. I'm a black woman. And you're telling me I'm self-hating just
because I refuse to support Obama?

Well, I'll tell you this: I vote for the person I think best represents my interests and values.

And I don't think Obama is that person.

Just because someone looks like me, doesn't mean they represent my interests or values. I don't engage in blind loyalty or group think, and I don't like being asked to do so by people like Barack and Michelle Obama and Tom Joyner.

133. Sadly, that doesn't surprise me. I believe that sentiment is very previlent in my community right
now.

Tavis Smiley gave a commentary one day recently, in which he basically said that although "we" (and I didn't appreciate him including me in that "we") in the African-American community love Obama and celebrate what he has accomplished (which I don't), we need to hold him accountable.

The crux of Tavis Smiley's commentary was that after you've fallen in love, don't forget to hold the person accountable.

And some of my fellow Black brothers and sisters wrote nasty emails to Tavis, and angrily called into the Tom Joyner Show, just eviserating and slamming Tavis. They were outraged that he would suggest we hold Obama accountable. And they asked how much money was he being paid by the Clintons.

It was ugly.

And I was just really disappointed in my community. Since when did it become a bad thing, to hold people accountable, even our own?

135. The funny thing is...
a few years ago, I really liked Obama, and even told friends that I would like to see him as president one day, and would vote for him. BUT, when I said 'one day', I didn't mean this early on in his career. That was really my main issue with him. Now, I have a whole host of issues with him.

144. Same here...I'll admit I got caught up, after his speech at the 2004 DNC
I even typed up the words "audacity of hope" and taped it to my desk.

But then I had to ask myself: What exactly am I supposed to be hoping for? And what comes after the hope? How does that hope translate into policies?

Not to mention that I still have trouble with his voting to report Condi Rice's nomination out of the Foreign Relations Committee, to the full Senate.

And I have trouble with his NOT VOTING on whether to even hold a no-confidence vote against Alberto Gonzales.

Obama has just been a tremendous disappointment to me.

40. he is attempting to appeal to black voters--can you imagine if Clinton tried that with females?
She was vilifed early in the race for any mention of her gender. How unfair they cried, she is playing the gender card. And successfully shut down any mention of gender.

Race is different. When anyone questions Obama, there are suggestions of racism, yet Obama can USE his race and appeal to black voters, and that any question of that is met with more suggestions of racism.

Obama is using race.

She was up all week campaigning and had a hell of a time in the media that week with constant unfair attacks and someone said, how do you handle it. And she was moved that someone thought of her as a human rather than a punching bag.

And when Mitt cried THREE TIMES that week on TV, not one reporter mentioned it. Who is playing the gender card? Or who is looking for another reason to attack Clinton.

96. I wonder if Hillary had urged folks to bring "Jim Bob, Billy Ray or Bubba" to the polls
how that would go over in SC. Part of the Southern Strategy worked because for decades movies made fun of the Southern Poor...."white trash, hillbillies, police who chewed and spit tobacca, uneducated and racist..." Not, that there's not some truth in sterotypes...but it's a sore point with Southerners and I would imagine there are many blacks who would take offense to what Obama is saying. Particularly the new professionals ...just as there are a few liberal Southerners in SC who've tried to live down the "Jim Bob, Billy Ray, Bubba."

I know people say when you "talk to your own group" you can tend to slip into lingo that you wouldn't use in work situations or other places....but Obama is running for President. He should know that anything he says will be heard everywhere.

Sad...that this stuff is going on..dirty politics. But, it seems to win elections..according to studies.

and from what I read, the audience didn't seem to mind either when he added a little levity.

You just don't like him, (I've read some of your other posts) so don't vote for him.

This sister, my cousin Pookie and Ray-Ray will vote as we choose. ...and yes, I have a cousin Pookie and Ray-Ray, LOL!

64. Of course Pooky is a black stereotype. It means a lazy good-for-nothing black person.
Had Hillary said the exact same thing all hell would have broken loose.

And Obama's continued use of this Pooky crap, merely shows off he is ready willing and able to play the race card by pulling out the stops on racial stereotypes, brazenly before the eyes of MSM, the nation, the world. This double standard is sad.

And I am telling you for a positive fact that when Obama uses Pooky in Alabama it conjurs up the image of the lazy black man - - hence the statement in the OP

And what the hell does going to Harvard have to do with it? Are you actually fucking suggesting that going to Harvard Law means you can't possibly understand the lives of people in poverty? Ridiculous. Furthermore, Obama did NOT grow up in a wealthy family at all. He went to Punahao on a scholarship and through Columbia and Harvard with scholarships and student loans.

I googled for some answers and found an interesting article on the subject:

"Who is Obama’s ‘Cousin Pookie’?"

snip: "The Obama campaign didn’t respond to requests for details. But Newhouse News Service asked some of America’s best minds on black culture, language and politics.

In their interviews and e-mails, Pookie emerges as a stock character of the black popular imagination, a name that has come to personify the kind of layabout kin who, if endearing, is also a source of some embarrassment and consternation to his more successful relations. And, it turns out, in his use of Pookie, Obama reveals something about himself."

149. Take away Race and what else has he got?
I'm sorry but what else has Obama got? This is a guy who beat Alan Keyes, who couldn't beat Alan Keyes, for God's sake? He wants to transcend "race" until it comes to an election. What is so ironic about this, is that Harlem is going through a renovation thanks to funds given by the Clinton Administration and private funds from the Clinton foundation.

I wasn't sure about Obama, after his vote confirming Condi Rice. But like most democrats I want to win this thing after 7 sickening years. But that business with Reagan...and not just the "transforming" issue...but the fact "Neither did Bill Clinton"....Clinton had to clean up the Reagan/Bush mess. Does Obama not think that Clinton being relected twice meant Republicans also voted for him? Obama went after Bill Clinton and Bill Clinton is returning the favor. Obama brought it on himself.

Obama had Oprah? Hillary had Bill. Poor Edwards.

If Obama wanted a president who transformed or caused people of different parties to vote for him...he should have said FDR, elected 4 times...and what seems to just "amaze" Obama suppporters.....FDR also won a landslide.

Yeah and I can just see Reagan giving a dime to help Harlem. Sure. Right. And Obama wasnt using Oprah, as a race card either. Course not...Oprah who couldnt get off her ass to help in the 2004 elections. Afterall her contribution was to give us Dr Phil. How can we not worship her? Where were these 2 during Katrina?

And I'm sorry Hillary Clinton isnt a Laura Bush type 1st Lady...if you think for one minute she wasn't involved in everything that went on in the White House, you're dreaming.

What a downer to come here and see Bill Clinton bashed...the only democrat who has successfully kicked ass and won against Republicans. You can do better? Do it, already.

I won't have to hold my nose to vote for Obama, I'll have to put on a gas mask.

151. You are WAY off base. I saw Obama give a speech when he was running for IL senate
years ago at a rural downstate farm in Macoupin CO , where there were close to 100% white people in attendance, and he talked about getting Pookie to the polls. That is who he is---it is NOT used in racial terms. People in the audience got what he meant then--get your family members who talk, but don't usually go vote, out to vote this time.

I am a white 62 year old Missouri woman who will NEVER vote for a Clinton again after the dirty tricks they have pulled on Obama. (I voted for BIll twice and have worked for Dems all my life-- starting when I was 15 years old and walked door to door for John F Kennedy. The response I got from so-called Christian white people then, because Kennedy was Catholic, reminds me of what is going on today--gullibility on the part of the electorate because of ignorance and unreasoned fear of those who are different.)

The Clintons and their supporters have been unbelievably nasty by playing on that fear and distorting anything and everything for their gain. I am tired of the Clinton lust for power. Maybe they used to care about people, I don't know, but they SURE don't now--- they care only about themselves. I have decided that if Hillary is the Democratic nominee, I will not vote for President, for the first time in my life. She is not the lesser of evils anymore. She is equal to the Repugs. There is no difference between Clinton and Bush/Rove.

I am ready for the younger generation to find their voice and take their place in the world. I think that voice is Obama, and I am all for giving him a chance to take us ALL forward.

Obama, himself, started this race card sideshow. It was intentional and blatant and the only reason the media has gone along with it is because of their hatred of the Clintons.

CNN is actively campaigning for Obama and it's shameful.

Ignore the fact that he's been wishy washy concerning critical votes or the fact he's only been in the Senate for 3 years..... Oprah sure did a good job promoting the 'agenda' huh?

And I am willing to bet that more black voters will vote THIS time around. If they had voted before, maybe the Shrub would not have had the office twice... shame.

Well people, you vote and you get what you deserve if he indeed turns out to be the closet Republican I and quite a few other suspect he really is.
