MSNBC: First turnout reports are in, county by county list
I don't know which counties are strongholds for which candidates. Perhaps someone with better knowledge of South Carolina can shed some light about what this means for Obama, Clinton, and Edwards chances tonight.

http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/

From NBC's Terry Pickard
An update from South Carolina's Elections Commission:

Turnout is heavier than last Saturday's GOP primary.

Reports from various counties:
Marlboro County -- heavy
Dorchester County -- slightly heavier than last weekend
Charleston County -- much heavier in some precincts
Williamsburg County -- average
Edgefield County -- very busy
Cherokee County -- greater turnout than last week
Hampton County -- turnout is much higher than last week
Darlington County -- fairly good

1. Well, here's the racial make-up of those counties listed.
Which could give you a better idea.

Dorchester County: 71% White, 25% Black
Charleston County: 62% White, 34% Black
Williamsburg County: 33% White, 66% Black
Edgefield County: 57% White, 42% Black
Cherokee County: 78% White, 21% Black
Hampton County: 43% White, 57% Black
Darlington County: 57% White, 42% Black

4. Yeah, so it's tough to say.
A county with 70% white population could be heavily Republican -- who does that benefit?

These demographics were posted earlier on DU by suston96:
have posted these numbers previously:

Interesting demographics about SC. From a state government site. I believe they are current.

Total registered voters in SC: 2,246,242

Total voted in Repub primary: 442,789

That leaves: 1,803,453

Of that non-white voters: 629,000

That leaves total white voters 1,174,353

Non-white voters in SC have shown up by some 20% more than white voters.

The demographics in the exit polling on Saturday will tell all about how the two groups voted.

7. Yeah, I expect the same. I wouldn't be surprised if Republican counties do, as well.
Edited on Sat Jan-26-08 05:32 PM by Drunken Irishman
Just because you've got to think the white population there is Republican and won't vote in a Democratic primary. Which means a larger black population at the voting booth could put Obama over the top.

11. I know. But if those demos include the people that already voted, the demos change
You will probably see the percentageof African Americans in each county increase because there really arent that many black Republicans.

8. Some interesting comments there:
"MSNBC has been saying all day that South Carolina voted for Bill Clinton in 1992. It didn't; it voted for Bush. MSNBC's biased coverage for Senator Obama is a dis-service to its listeners; the electorate, who deserve a discussion on the issues; and most of all to Senator Obama himself. "

"I will miss Chris MAttews hatred for Hilliary tonight he would be able to crow all night .Who won South carolina in 80 84 88 92 96 2000 2004 lets talk.Wheres the scarboro clan who hate the clintons or tucker the all hilliary and bill did this channel well it helped in New Hampshire what a great day to work here .Well keep your fingers crossed you bet on a horse hope the hype wins.

12. Is it possible MSNBC is talking about the 1992 So. Carolina primary?
Clinton won that one.

14. I think Clinton won every southern state in the primary.
He won SC by a huge margin. He got 62% of the vote.

13. Oh, I'm getting whiplash. Earlier you complained that us Obama-supporters were being whiners.
What has happened other than a sorely needed "reality check?"

Yes, as much as I despise the pseudo-journalist known as Chris Mathews, it's not his fault that Bill Clinton tried to drudge up the Jim Crowe days in South Carolina. The Clintonian DLC and some of the surrogates are just plain morally bankrupt ... and it is being revealed to The American People as well as The Good People (All skin tones) in South Carolina. :patriot: ;)

18. OK, I stand corrected on that one technicality: but when you copy and paste - that's promotion.
Unless you wish that such views were not aired, the fact that you POST them gives them veracity from your point of view. Or do you disavow what you have posted from others?
