Sarasota Herald Tribune: Hillary Clinton Apparently Breaks Democrats' No Florida Campaigning Pledge
Clinton apparently breaks Democrats' no Florida campaigning pledge
By ANNA SCOTT

PHOTO

She thrills some by posing for photos in Sarasota, but may have violated the pledge made by all the major candidates.

SIESTA KEY -- Sen. Hillary Clinton appeared to break her pledge against public campaigning in Florida on Sunday by greeting a group of neighbors waiting outside a private fundraiser.

The crowd cheered when Clinton's motorcade stopped. She stepped out and smiled and waved, posed for pictures with supporters and even answered a question from a reporter.

When asked whether this meant she was breaking the Democratic boycott and campaigning before Florida's primary Tuesday, Clinton said, "I just wanted to say hello to a few people who were nice enough to wait for me."

She then promised to return on Tuesday.

"I'm going to campaign very hard to win Florida in November," she said. "That's why I want the Florida delegates to be seated at the convention. I'm going to ask my delegates to vote to do that."

The Democratic presidential candidates pledged not to campaign here before the primary under pressure from the Democratic National Committee, which stripped Florida of its delegates when the state Legislature voted to move the primary date from March to Jan. 29, breaking the party's rules. It is up to the other delegates around the country, not the committee, to decide who gets seated at the party's national nominating convention.

Obama pops in for Sarasota fundraiser

Democratic candidate's Sarasota speech was for big donors only
By CAROL E. LEE

carol.lee@heraldtribune.com
BIRD KEY -- The Democratic presidential candidate who has raised the most money in Southwest Florida made his first visit to Sarasota on Monday night.

But unless you were among the more than 200 guests who paid at least $1,000 each or committed to raise as much as $10,000 for his campaign, you did not get to shake Sen. Barack Obama's hand or hear him speak. .......

........
Obama arrived on Bird Key in a six-car motorcade at around 5:30 p.m.

Flanked by a security detail, he was ushered into David and Lisa Grain's $4 million bayfront home. The media was quarantined across the street.

The only outside glimpse of Obama was when he briefly emerged from the home's garage to shake hands with supporters standing at the foot of the arched entryway.

17. This doesn't seem to be "campaigning"...
I suppose depending on what your definition of "campaigning" is. ;) (A national media buy that includes Florida, fund raiser appearance right before the primary.)

The candidates did just agree not to campaign in Florida prior to the primary, right? I assume their agreement doesn't apply to campaigning there after the primary up to the convention. I know candidates don't usually spend much time in the primary season campaigning in states that have already voted, but I hope they didn't use that as a reason to extend the campaign ban.

23. Miami Beach fans catch glimpse of Clinton
Hillary Clinton spoke for about 10 minutes at a Beach fundraiser, discussing healthcare, alternative energy and student loans.

<snip>

"Hillary Clinton: "gutter-ball bowler."

The Democratic presidential contender admitted as much Sunday night as she arrived at Lucky Strike Lanes on Miami Beach for the second of three Florida fundraisers. She was greeted by a smiling Miami Mayor Manny Diaz, who told a throng of reporters he was "thrilled to be here to endorse Hillary Clinton as the next president of the United States."

A crowd that had gathered across the street applauded as Clinton arrived, and she and Diaz embraced. She shook hands with another man holding a child and was overheard noting, "I am a gutter-ball bowler."

Not everyone awaiting her arrival was a Clinton booster. Brooke Gaebe, 24, of Miami Beach stood across the street with a sign that read, "Hillary said she wouldn't campaign in Florida. I want a president that can keep a promise."

Gaebe, who supports Barack Obama, said Clinton's visit "feels unfair.

"When a candidate makes a pledge not to campaign in a state and shows up two days before the presidential preference primary, it is a campaign message," she said. "It is campaigning."

Angie Angelis of West Kendall walked out of the event holding a signed copy of Clinton's book, Living History.

She said the former first lady spoke for about 10 minutes, touching on healthcare, alternative energy and a program for college students to exchange college debt for public service.

''She said she will be here on Tuesday and that she'll fight for the Florida delegates to be counted at the national convention,'' Angelis said. ``It was terrific, very energized.''

Robin Straus, a physician, said Clinton hit all the important issues, from Iraq to healthcare.

''She signed autographs. She took pictures,'' Straus said.

.......Though Clinton hasn't campaigned in the state, Garcia said her supporters have been visible.....

Clinton has led Obama for months in Florida polls, but no Democrats have campaigned in the state since signing a pledge last summer at the behest of the early-primary states that wanted to punish Florida for moving up its primary.

The difference in scale of Obama's ads compared to Hillary shaking a few hands is laughable.

This is literally making a mountain out of a molehill and actually exposes Obama to further criticism more than it hurts Hillary.
