Keep running hard until nomination, and hope rivals stumble

By ROB CHRISTENSEN

McClatchy Newspapers

Columbia: Former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards four state strategy that was to launch him to the White House has fizzled on the pod.

But in the aftermat of disappointing third- place finish in the Palmetto State's Democratic primary Saturday'Edwards and his supporters say they are moving to Plan B: A marathon run in which they plan to stay in the race with the hope that one or more of the two front-runners Hillary Clinton and Barrack Obama will implode

"We believe it will go to the convention,"said Joe Trippi Edwards' chief strategist.

In the worst-case senario, they say Edwards will enter the Democratic national convention in Denver in Augustas a power broker, helping drive the agenda on issues he has chapioned such as health care, povety and the inequities of bad trade deals.

And they say that anything can happen.Adding to the volatility is increasingly negative and polarizing tone of the campaign, with Clinton and Obama making personal attacks against one another. Trippi pointed the acrimonious Myrtle Beach debate last week in which the two front runners clashed while Edwards scored points by staying out of the fray.

The campaign says it has raised $3 million over the Internet so far in January, including $230,000 on Thursday. Most of the money the campaign says is coming in donations of $100 or less.

Trippi said he expected that Edwards would be able to s pend 70% of what Clinton and Obama will spend on Feb.5 Super Tuesday states, which would keep Edwards financially competitive , if still outspent.
