I really want Ted Kennedy to include this quote....
...in his speech, "And now...a torch really has been passed to a new generation."

Because, that torch, truly is in the process of being handed over to Obama.

Wouldn't that be so inspirational and amazing if that quote was a part of
Kennedy's speech?

I can't wait to hear this speech.

:)

1. Who says

Some of us may want different things.

Depends who you are passing it on to.

2. He could say that at Obama's inauguration
but right now, it's more like passing a Bic lighter to the next generation.

4. Maybe it's a Bic lighter to you...
...but it's a torch to many proud Obama supporters.

Everything worthwhile begins with a single spark.

Peace to you.

7. My point is only that
no torch can be said to have been passed just because he got an endorsement.

It would also signify the end of Teddy's career, and hopefully, it will go for a long time.

11. I said that I hoped that Ted Kennedy...
Edited on Mon Jan-28-08 11:50 AM by TwoSparkles
...would say this line. Only because it would be a beautiful symbol.

Caroline Kennedy's endorsement of Obama was titled, "A President Like My Father"
which is a strong signal that this could be the message of the endorsement.

We'll have to wait and see what Ted Kennedy says in his speech. You might be
right that the Kennedy's won't go so far as to say that "the torch has been
passed." However, many indicators point to the possibility of that strong
statement being made.

We'll all know very shortly...

10. It is presumptive...
Edited on Mon Jan-28-08 11:42 AM by TwoSparkles
...but my presumptions are based on the notion that the Kennedy
family has never coalesced to support and endorse a candidate in
this very iconic way. Even Kerry, a Senate stalwart, didn't
enjoy these profound endorsements in the Dem primary.

In effect, the Kennedy's are handing their father's/brother's
torch to Obama and clearly sending the message that Obama is 'the
real deal'.

It's exciting.

I understand that others won't agree with this. That's fine. However, it
is exciting to Obama supporters who feel that Obama is an amazing,
transcendent candidate who can right the wrongs of BushCo and get
this country on the right track.

We all support our candidates for very personal reasons, that's
one commonality we all share in this process.

13. So when Obama rails against te excesses and demagoguery
of the 60's - 90's, saying that he'll be the voice of change and hope and yada yada, that's ok. But when he's endorsed by the leading dynastic force behind those eras, that's ok too?

My head is spinning...

6. Yeah, it's too bad that according to the U.S. Census Bureau Obama
is just another baby boomer, albeit a youngish one. If he were from another generation, "passing the torch" might have some significance. As it is, it comes across more as a pathetic appeal to America's cult of youth.

On the other hand, not to worry. The truth has little value in this society any more. Everything is spin.

8. I don't want to hear ANY more "generational" talk.
I think it's divisive and unhelpful.

I think he should say something reminiscent of his speech about "the dream shall never die."

12. Many people are getting hooked into the...
...word "generation".

When I hear, "The torch has been passed to a new generation" I do not think
of age. Generations don't have to be defined in the conventional sense--by age.

I think of a new "generation"....of ideas and of purpose. Any age
or any demographic can be included in that "generation".

I'm a 43-year old woman. I include myself in the "Obama generation"--which is
a large group of Americans--of all ages and races--who believe in Obama's ideas, policies and character.

15. Let's not set too high a standard.

For a baby boomer unwilling to accept the conventional definition of his generation, what works seems to be all that matters.

http://www.census.gov/Press-Release/www/releases/archives/facts_for_features_special_editions/006105.html

When it comes to self-serving spin, it's next to impossible to distinguish the "new" politics from the old.
