He won 8 in South Carolina. He could go to the convention with a bloc of delegates which could decide who the nominee is. In the old days when somebody got to be the power broker in that way he usually got rewarded. Could Edwards be our VP nominee again in 2008?

1. Realistically, he's not going to win the nomination.
Anyone care to place a bet? He should do ala Dean '04 and step aside. I'll give him until Super Tuesday, but it's really looking like an Obama/Clinton ticket.

2. Proportionally Edwards has a Lot more Delegates than Dean did in 2004.
He'll still be in come convention time.

Get used to it.

7. I don't give a damn if he's in or not.
Actually, I take that back, I encourage his participation. The more, the merrier. I'm just saying realistically, he ain't got a chance. If he had to settle for a VP position in '04 with a #1 win in SC, I don't think #8 will cut it.

Hey, it don't matter to me who gets the nomination, whoever it will be is going to be the President... and a Democrat. Mission accomplished. 'nuf said.

8. Dean forfeited his delegates though
When he endorsed Kerry and fell in line. Edwards isn't going to do that here, he's building up a bloc that will probably pick who gets the nom if he keeps going what he's doing.

11. On reflection, I think you've hit the nail on the head.
I don't think he's looking for a win, but for INFLUENCE. or he could be just Guiliani-ing (i.e. sticking it out against all odds) until all hope is lost.

13. You never know
He might pick up the nom outright anyway, what matters is the delegates not the states won. While one or two peanuts doesn't mean squat by themselves when you get a ton of peanuts that's a hell of a lot of peanuts.

9. Super Tuesday will allow a good first assessement.
If his support stays well above 15%, I think he'll have enough delegates to yield a brokered convention.

I don't know if a Clinton/Obama ticket would work either. It seems poisonous to me.

10. That is assuming that he can continue to win 15% in each state
He barely got that amount in SC, a state where he was born which is adjacent to the state he represented in the Senate. I'm not sure how many people will vote for a candidate in order to make them a 'power broker.'
