Attorney General John Edwards?
Edited on Mon Jan-28-08 03:36 PM by EV_Ares
I have been calling for this for sometime if Edwards is not to get the nomination. I also don't usually quote Novak but this info comes from Mother Jones and I think John Edwards would be one of the best AG this country has or could have.
----------------------

Bob Novak has a report out that says unnamed "Illinois Democrats" are "quietly passing the word that John Edwards will be named attorney general in an Obama administration." Novak is a hyperpartisan bullshit artist who will make stuff up in order drive a wedge between Democrats, so it's hard to take this all that seriously.

But it does raise an interesting thought experiment. John Edwards is a passionate fighter for the poor, for labor, and for universal health care—he would be a wonderful addition to any Democratic administration. He would be a great attorney general, particularly because he could fight for workers on labor law issues and he could fight for the traditionally disenfranchised on election law. He could really reinvigorate the role of the Secretary of Labor. He could head a regulatory agency like the FDA, where his distaste for corporate power could combine with his passion for fair and affordable health care. And he would make an exciting VP choice for Obama, as I've said for quite some time.

That's a long-winded way of saying, even if he doesn't get the nomination, more Edwards! Of course, the Edwards folks probably don't want to hear that. They want to hear "Edwards for prez!" And that's why the Obama people are floating this rumor, assuming it's true: it gets the progressive media to laud Edwards' potential as an attorney general while further marginalizing his chances for the presidency.

had one. Edwards will take on corruption whereever he sees it which wouldn't be in an Obama Admin.

8. Edwards would make a good AG.
Couple Edwards as AG with some new corporate laws passed by an inspired Congress -- with a new Prez who won't automatically veto any corporate restriction -- and we'd have something.

Even if he doesn't get the nomination, Edwards can still accomplish a lot.

If that's "marginalizing his chances for Prez" -- well, I've decided it's time for me to get real about his chances.

...a poster got upset, saying that John Edwards is running for president and doesn't care what we think about him as AG. Still, I'd love to see him in this spot and protecting our voting rights.

... an equally divisive Republican in some other office.

If he wins the nomination and then appoints Edwards to AG, then I can already hear the media/talk radio/everyone saying "he's just another far-left radical politician and he lied about being 'uniting' just to get in office and satisfy his ego."

edited for stupid typos

16. I suggested this some time ago here at DU with the thought
he would be the perfect anti-Gonzales. I don't mean to offend Edwards or his base of support, I happen to like him quite a bit, but everyone needs a Plan B. If Edwards does not capture the nomination, and he was appointed AG, he could use that to spring for his next presidential run. That's what Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., did.

All that aside, he's a natural to restore our Constitutional privileges stripped away by the Bush* administration. I mean this in the most flattering of ways. I trust him implicitly to run the DOJ in the manner in which it was intended, not as a "yes man" to anyone sitting in the Oval Office. That position would probably would a lot more challenging for an obviously astute attorney than occupying the Office of the Vice Presidency.

But of course, it is not my prerogative to speak for Edwards, or his base; as I said above just a potential Plan B for consideration. If he does engineer a win for the nomination, I would unhesitatingly support him.
