AP: Corrects handshake story!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No Chitchat Between Clinton and Obama

By LAURIE KELLMAN – 40 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — So close, yet so far away — and so bitter.

Rival Democrats Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama came within a foot of each other just before President Bush's State of the Union speech Monday night and managed not to acknowledge each other, and certainly not touch.

Clinton, clad in scarlet, crossed the aisle between their seats on the House floor. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, the Democratic icon who had endorsed Obama earlier in the day over Clinton, reached out his hand when she came close.

She took it; they shook. Meanwhile, Obama, dressed in a dark suit, had turned away.

The rivals then retreated to their seats, only the aisle and four senators between them.

It was the latest chapter in the increasingly nasty fight between the two leading candidates for the Democratic presidential nomination and capped a dramatic day.

Hours earlier, Obama received the endorsements of Kennedy and Caroline Kennedy, the brother and daughter, respectively, of President John F. Kennedy. They were joined by Rep. Patrick Kennedy, D-R.I., the senator's son.

The only Republican senator still running, John McCain of Arizona, skipped the address to campaign in Florida.

(This version CORRECTS the sequence of handshake.)

So Obama was giving them room!!!

23. Awe comeon. SHE crossed the aisle to THEM. Perhapse the
media is making more out of this than is warranted, but it appears Hillary made the first move. I think, since there's no video, we'll never know if Barack was preoccupied with something else, turned because he felt he wasn't part of a conversation, or is pissed enough that he didn't want to shake her hand.

56. One thing to always remember..
The Clintons are teflon coated...nothing actually sticks. Obama is try to copy that as well. He hasn't quite mastered the formula yet. It's really simple. Nothing sticks when you tell the Truth.

I was amazed tonight to hear Doris Kearns Goodwin on PBS actually admit Hillary was right about MLK and president Johnson; and that it was the Obama campaign that turned it into a Clinton racial smear..

45. I guess the only reason I feel the pic doesn't tell the whole story is
because that kind of action is so out of character for him. I'm still not decided on who I'm going o vote for, so I'm not siding with either candidate here. I know snapshots can look ike one thing and really be something completely different. The impression I had of Barack just doesn't fit that kind of action.

58. A still photo doesn't tell us much
We'd have to see a tape and I guess there isn't one.
But it was reported that Clare McCaskill was seated right there and he was talking to her. She is in his national ad, he had campaigned for her 2006 run...so as far as we know he was turned to respond.
Clinton and Kennedy are just reaching for each others hand, she is looking at Kennedy...Obama wouldn't have his hand out then anyway.

It's like a quote out of context, you just can't tell the meaning. I always look up the full quote before I accept an excerpt. (The press likes to make drama!)

But symbolically it's a quite a picture.

Post count isn't valued much here, which is why it caps at "1000+". Good system, as it eliminates the "OMG I HAVE 5432 POSTS AND YOU ONLY HAVE 5400 N00B" nonsense seen on many other forums.

Well, almost eliminates... :eyes:

Given the amount of Obama hysteria tonight as they try to squelch any and all discussion of Handshake-gate, I should hit my 1000+ in an hour or so. Time-consuming work it is, deflating your cronies' ridiculousness.

35. But Kennedy initiated the hand shake which changes everything
If Kennedy hadn't put his hand out they all would have been left standing there. No one was required to shake anyones hand but Kennedy decided to be nice. I suspect she didn't shake anyone else's hand in that area yet we are not going bat shit over those people not reaching up to shake her hand.

48. Here's another description:
“When Clinton straightened up, Kennedy quickly reached across Barack Obama to shake Clinton’s hand. She took it. As they spoke, Obama turned away. Then the senators seated to Obama’s right – Ben Nelson and Ken Salazar — both shook Senator Clinton’s hand and talked to her. Instead of doing the same, Obama turned to look at the back of the room. Sen. Claire McCaskill, who has also endorsed Obama and was seated next to Kennedy, reached across the Massachusetts senator — who was still talking to Clinton — and tapped Obama (still twisted toward the back of the room) on the shoulder. McCaskill engaged Obama in conversation until the moment passed.”

would the headline have been "Obama prevents Kennedy from having private conversation with Clinton" or something? Is there video anywhere, because the still photos don't tell the story. From the still photos I could say, why is that woman next to Clinton pulling away from Ted like he has cooties?
