A while back, I posted here that I thought McCain was the sleeper candidate
in the Republican party. I saved the post to my journal and just checked to see what the date was; it was on December 21. From what's happened in the month since I wrote that, it seems that I was correct. Believe me, I'm not happy to be correct about this; as the last sentence of that post said, I do not want this man to be president. But I wish I could get a paying job as a pundit. :-)

1. I knew it would be him as well...simply by deduction.
The other candidates are easy to dismiss each for their own indivicual stunning weaknesses.

McCain was all that was left.

2. I don't think the Repubs will rally around him...
if he gets the nom. Have you been to Freeperville lately? Heads are exploding over McCain's win tonight!

He is just the most attractive candidate out of a field of freaks.

5. Haven't been there, but I know they can't stand him.
A lot of the Republicans don't like him: he actually voted out of lockstep a few times, and that just won't do. :sarcasm:

Unfortunately, a lot of independents love him. I also worry that McCain would pick a VP who would make up for his perceived (by Republicans) deficiencies and then they would rally 'round him. And McCain's such a hawk, even the uberhawk, Kissinger has endorsed him. :scared:

3. Good call. Early on a thought Fred Thompson could be big, but that didn't pan out.
I knew Guiliani wasn't going anywhere. I still think Huckabee has been underestimated, Thompson was sucking his votes. We'll see after Florida.

4. Well, it's simply his turn
He's waited on the sidelines, loyal to the drunken frat boy who trashed his family and his military career in 2000, and it's time for his reward.

The #2 spot will be an interesting one. Do they choose Hucksterbible or some other fundy nut to balance the ticket, or do they wake up and realize the economy is swirling down the pan and pick an economic ideologue?

Whatever happens, should they lose (and they should, you know), the party will likely be split right down the middle as Reagan's coalition of the rich and the religious blame each other for the loss.
