There is something in the air tonight... an unstoppable "dream team" in the making?
Edited on Thu Jan-31-08 10:18 PM by Seabiscuit
This was the most civil debate these two candidates have ever had. And it was the first where both discussed the issues at length.

It became apparent early on that these two people have buried their hatchets, and for the first time since whatever it was that robbed us of John Edwards, that I have enjoyed a feeling of renewed hope for the country and for the party. Imagine a Clinton candidacy with Obama as her running mate, or an Obama candidacy with Clinton as his running mate!

Tonight at the debate I came to believe for the first time that either one of them could destroy ANYONE the Republicans throw at them, and that the two of them as a team could possibly win in a landslide. Imagine a Clinton/Obama or Obama/Clinton in the White House with John Edwards as their Attorney General and future Supreme Court Justice. Wow.

So I've changed my mind. I'm voting for John Edwards on Super Tuesday, out of principle, loyalty, and protest, but I'll vote for whoever carries our Democratic banner next November.

And I'm not going to allow any DU nastiness from their supporters influence my thinking about these two candidates ever again. I'm going to keep an open mind from now on and see what happens.

2. Here's my Conspiracy Theory, continued from yesterday. We had no idea what
happened to JE, or why he would be pressured to drop out so suddenly and NOT endorse anyone. I think NOW we know. Someone made a call.. a decision was made to present HRC and Obama as a United Front, because the party was literally fracturing. Tonight, everyone had their marching orders and they followed the script, and it worked. We, most of us, were able to see BOTH Barack and Hillary as leaders of this party, perhaps even together, and thus the Democratic party becomes again Unified and able to win in the GE. We will still have the tens of thousands of new voters and independents brought in by Obama and the base brought in by Hillary. It was a purposeful bringing together of a "dream team", to save the party.. to save our country.

9. You could be right. You do make sense. Obama and Hillary behaved themselves tonight.
There was the appearance of party unity despite a pretty fierce debate.

All I can say there is much, much more to Edwards withdrawal than what he shared with us in his press conference.

11. I go with the party unity thing.
I have my doubts about the O/C C/O combination, but I think somebody must have called an emergency meeting of the party cheeses to address the schism. They are now presenting a unified front against the Republicans for the better good.

15. I am glad that you feel more comfortable with it.
For me however nothing has changed, I don't dislike hillary because she isn't nice.

I dislike Hillary because of her do anything say anything to win politics. Including making a vote on a war based on political expediency.

I dislike hillary for her corporate cronyism for her ties to lobbyists.I dislike hillary for her top down theory of government. I don't like her heavy handedness when it comes to trying to get her way. I remember the beginning of this campaign when she was leaning on her big supporters to not donate to anyone besides her. She puts lipstick on the pig but the pig is still there.

I suppose you will put this down as an obama supporters nastiness, but from the beginning it has been abc for me and tonight doesn't change that for me one whit. I don't want Obama on a ticket with her either. Not on the top of the ticket and not on the bottom.

I despise her type of politics she represents everything I find wrong with our politics, I wont support her and if she gets the nod it will be a coin toss on if I will vote for her or against her.

The differences between her and Obama are glaring to me. One is a top down dem and the other is bottom up. I subscribe to the bottom up type of politics.

16. the goal
The goal was never to present a united front, IMHO, it was to shut down one of the two factions fighting for the heart and soul of the party. It has nothing to do with beating Republicans, rather to co-opt the people into supporting one wing of the party by drumming up fear of the Republicans.

One side was asked to stop fighting, not because it hurt our chances against the Republicans, but rather because it threatened the power of those controlling the Democratic party. It could well make us much weaker against the Republicans.

Of course every one feels good about tonight. It was a carefully orchestrated show designed to have that effect.

17. I really wish I could share your optimism.
I got an e-mail from someone recently that summed up my condition perfectly.

Electile Dysfunction: The inability to get excited about any of the candidates running for President.

21. I wouldn't call it "optimism".
But at this point, for all my misgivings about Obama and Hillary, it's all we've got left to show for ourselves, as dismal as that may seem to me. Nevertheless, they both came across as attacking Republicans last night, instead of attacking each other, and that's an improvement - either of them is still a huge improvement over 4 more years of Republican rule, and it was just enough to convince me to vote for the Dem candidate, whoever it may be, over the Repuke next November, instead of writing in John Edwards' name out of disgust with the system.
