Do You Believe in Magic?
Edited on Fri Feb-01-08 02:00 AM by NanceGreggs
After watching tonight’s debate between Barack and Hillary (and, yes, I do feel I know them both well enough to call them by their front names), I felt a bit of the ol’ magic come back into our lives.

Two incredibly intelligent, well-informed, articulate people discussed not only the fact that we, as a nation, face a myriad of problems, but actually spoke cogently about solutions.

It seems like a very long time (actually, seven years and a bit) since I’ve heard political discourse that didn’t rely on talking points scrawled in crayola on the back of the architectural plans for a bridge to nowhere, or a placard reading StayTheCourse, MissionAccomplished, VictoryIsJust AroundtheCorner, or the all-inclusive Don't Think - Just Trust Us.

In stark contrast to the recent GOP debates, I was reminded tonight not only of what we should be as a nation, but what we can be going forward under the leadership of a president who believes that despite the worst of times we are living in, the best is yet to come.

About twenty years ago, I was listening to someone talking on a radio program – I can’t remember the topic, nor the context; but in this case, neither is truly important. What he said was, “When ordinary Americans believe they can make a difference, they inevitably do.”

What I heard tonight was two people reminding me that I can inevitably make a difference – and they had me from hello.

While the Republican candidates offer soundbytes – the economy is strong, our dependence on foreign oil must be addressed, we are facing difficult challenges – not only has not a single solution to our current problems been offered, they are still insistent in telling us that these problems simply don’t exist.

Of course, there is a reason why the GOP can’t admit that we have problems – because it was their president, and their unwavering support of his policies, that created those problems to begin with.

The political pundits – aka those who are paid to speak on the basis of knowing absolutely nothing – are already referring to tonight’s event as a “discussion rather than a debate”.

And for once, they’re right. It was a discussion; a discussion that the American people have been waiting too long to hear. A discussion not only about where we are, but where we go from here; a heart-to-heart about what went wrong, and how to make it right.

It’s a discussion that the Republicans have to avoid at all costs – because when you talk about where we are, the obvious question arises as to how we got here – and I think we all know the answer.

Political campaigns are made of a combination of sugar-‘n-spice and snails-‘n-puppy dog’s tails. They are spun to the left and to the right; they include tattletales and taunts, he said/she said, half-truths and whole truths and nothing-but-the-thruths – all ultimately interpreted by We the People who have seen it all, heard it all and, in the end, will tend to make up our own minds when all is said and done.

But then there’s The Magic – it inspires, it motivates, it makes believers out of non-believers. It pushes the dark forces back and reminds us all that when we believe we can make a difference, we inevitably will. The Magic transcends space and time: it encourages us to look back on what once made us great, and reminds us that the brass ring is still there, just waiting to be grabbed and triumphantly displayed to the world. The Magic doesn’t mire itself in what-has-been, but builds on the foundation of what-could-be.

As displayed by our two last-standing candidates tonight, We've got The Magic on our side - and it is grounded not in soundbytes, but real ideas to be implemented, and real ideals worth striving for.

To the nay-sayers, the things-will-never-change crowd, the we’re-doomed-no-matter-what constituents – the non-believers in magic – I can only say this: "I’d tell ya about the magic, it would free your soul – but it’s like trying to tell a stranger ‘bout rock-‘n-roll."

I believe you meant first names? And Obama's is Barack.

"Front names" is a very old, traditionally-accepted form of "first names" - shows you how old I actually am.

4. I wish Mythsaje were around tonight
because I think he'd really enjoy this piece.

BTW, told ya ya should have stuck out the GOP debate last night, if only to hear their candidates actually admit that there are problems. Romney gave quite a laundry list at one point, but was careful to address it as if a bunch of evil Commie space alien pod people had burdened America with these things, as opposed to his own party, who enthusiastically cheered every last one of the idiot policies the Dictator-Tot has implemented, the very policies that have fucked up the country beyond recognition. It was jaw-dropping.

24. And unfortunately, a good majority of the electorate will buy into this horseshit
The eventual nominee (Clinton or Obama) will have to hit back hard and keep reminding the American public which party has been in control of the Presidency and Congress for most of the past 7 1/2 years. It is not time to play nice or try to be "above the fray". It is war with the Republicans, pure and simple and if the nominee attempts to play it like Kerry, then we are doomed.

28. The average citizen has a very short memory
and is vulnerable to sounds bites, the shorter the better. This time around I'm not so sure it will be a "majority" though. Too many people have been affected directly by the policies of this administration. When hardship and uncertainty hits one's own home and family, one tends to wake up and pay more attention.

42. Looking back over history, the R's have done far more damage
this country than any D's.

Just in the last century, Harding, Coolidge, Hoover, Nixon, Reagan and the current moron have brought us to the point of destruction nearly every time. TR, Eisenhower and bush I are the exceptions, (Ford doesn't really count...;) ).

There's good and bad in every administration...but usually there is some kind of balance. Looking at bush, it is all bad, horrid in fact...and they have to get windbags to blame a man for 30+ years ago...it is pathetic.

Even the Nixon administration had numerous positive points. I can't see looking back on this one and finding one positive accomplishment. Well, actually there is one - he woke us up and got people involved in government again, probably not one he would brag about.

45. Well...he has singlehandedly destroyed the GOP for years to
come, especially the neo-con agenda.

I am in Nebraska, and I have never seen the R's out here so completely dismayed. There are a few die-hards, but the vast majority i speak with admit that bush is by far, the worst president this nation has seen in their lifetimes. Businesses are failing, people are out of work, there are a few bright spots, but all things considered, it will be years before the economy picks up again, and these people know it. bush has taken a good portion of the Midwest away from the GOP camp, and I'm hoping this will spill over into the House and Senate seats as well.

When one adds to the formula that the R's can't field a candidate that can say, "This is the direction we should be going", because that admits that the R's under bush got us to where we should not be, and the table has been set for a landslide victory for D's all over the country. We can upset the table, to be sure, but if we get honest and caring people into both Houses, and a good president that will take on the major problems, we can change the course of the nation...for the better. Back to where we, as citizens, were not automatically looked at as the criminals and terrorists of the world.

Bless his black little heart. After Nixon, the repubs were able to regroup and stage a comeback in a relatively short period of time. The damage this time is far more devastating and the Dems far more aware. The republicans will have to go through a major transformation to become halfway credible again. Somewhere right now, there is probably a young Karl Rove type plotting some future comeback.

51. The R's never got over Nixon's resignation...
the alternative was impeachment and trial...one of the reasons that went after Clinton for so long was to make amends for that perceived slight. Fact was, Nixon was a crook, they could not admit that.

Reagan, here's one for you. I was reading up on bin-Laden, what makes this guy tick. Several things it turns out, the big one being a presence of US forces in Saudi Arabia. OK, there is the seed of the hate, but he could not figure out what to do to Americans and our allies w/o bringing down both the military power of the US and the House of Saud on his head. Tis brings up Beirut. When the USMC barracks were bombed, tough talking Reagan just pulled everyone out of Beirut. This planted the notion that we were actually a paper tiger in the eyes not just of the Muslim world, but particularly in the eyes of bin-Laden. In a nutshell, Reagan set up booth WTC bombings, and the one that happened under Clinton's watch was solved, the bombers caught, and tried. (caveat: Clinton had little to do w/the capture, lot of luck and decent police work were involved). Point is, it was a "win" under the circumstances. Clinton also had bin-Laden in the sights, but the R congress started screeching "wag the dog", and he was cornered...missed bin-Laden by less than half an hour.

The R's are to blame for far more than they will ever concede to. They got bush in, and then celebrated...today...if I had the market on Crying Towels, I'd be a millionaire!

17. Naysayer alert
I just wish Obama or Hillary would tell us how all of this "change" is going to be paid for. Yes, you can change a lot if you pump enough money in, but where do you get the money if not by adding to a 9+ trillion dollar debt that's already costing us 400+ billion a year in interest to service? I'm still waiting for any of the candidates to weigh in on the really tough issues, like how they will deal with the problem of dwindling water resources in this country. I'm still waiting for any of the candidates to tell us in concrete terms what kind of shared sacrifices will be necessary to achieve their goals. If they're pretending that won't be needed, they're just peddling snake oil and rainbows. Because let's face it...nobody who says they are hungry for "change" is talking about their own behavior; they want whoever they vote for to change other people's behavior so that they can keep doing more of what they want.

19. That was one fine debate and two fine candidates.
And there was magic in the air last night. If you listened closely, you heard two intelligent, engaging people putting out cogent, well thought out ideas of how to deal with the country's problems.

While there are some differences in substance--health care for example--for the most part it came down to differences in how to take their vision and move forward with it. It's Hillary Clinton, the detail oriented, methodical executive vs Barack Obama, who sees himself riding and guiding a tidal wave of popular desperation for change into the 21st century.

I'll be voting for Obama on Super Tuesday, and hope that he wins, but if in the end, Clinton comes out on top and becomes the Democratic nominee, I can live with and will work for her victory in the Fall. My previous committment to Clinton was to tell myself that "It's the Supreme Court, Stupid" and vote for her, left hand firmly holding my nose while my right hand pushed the button that would (hopefully) send my vote to the (Hopefully unhacked) central tabulator.

That's what last night's magic did for me. Now let's hope they keep it up.

44. Well, not really either
With regard to our nation's finances, the glass is neither half empty nor half full. The glass is empty and there's a hole through the bottom that reaches all the way to the center of the earth. The candidates need to tell us how they're going to deal with that hole before they talk about filling up the glass again. That's the unpleasant truth that Obama's Pollyanna outlook (and the rhetoric of everyone else running too, to be fair) has completely obscured. The attitude that we can achieve all these lofty goals without sacrificing somewhere, somehow, will get us nowhere but deeper in a hole that will eventually cave in and bury us.

The great magician, W. Bush, made the Constitution and our Treasury disappear . The real trick will be to make them materialize. We can only hope either Barack or Hillary will have the powers to undo the insane disaster created by the Decider. A good start would be an immediate end to the Iraq occupation and a new tax code that soaks the rich as they have been the primary beneficiaries of Bush's crimes.
And who put the monster's brain in John McCain's body?
There's nothing like a Nance rant to get the mind engaged. As usual, outstanding.

33. Yes, Virginia, there *really* is a Santa Claus. And a tooth fairy. And an Easter Bunny!
We'll see if that lovefest from last night continues when the real campaigning starts. I noted that both candidates started the debate last night with assurances that one of the two of them would soon occupy the oval office. Perhaps I'm just magically intuiting what was happening, but it felt distinctly like the PTB have taken steps to assure there will be *no* brokered convention! That feels more like brute force than magic.

It's going to take a lot more than magic to turn this country around. And let me assure you that this statement comes from someone with *strong* respect for the power of dreams, the importance of intention. I just like to balance that with the use of the head that rests on top of my shoulders.

There is no doubting that the two candidates we saw last night live in a different universe than their GOP opposition. The very idea of *any* of the GOP candidates "leading" this country is simply a nightmare of unbelievable proportions. But it is now only February 1, and our choices are quite clearly being made for us in ways we've not seen before -- with money and media interests leading us about by the noses. Magic? More like malfeasance!

50. That is understandable
You just lost your candidate. That disappointment is bound to hover in the air for a long time. This is an easier time for those who are basically uncommitted and haven't made the emotional investment in a candidate.

It will get better, but it will never be quite the same.

53. WOW!
Thanks for that! Really fun to listen to, and watch!

(Of course, I won't feel this happy-dappy about it over the next 48 hours, when I realize you've given ME the dreaded ear worm ...)

Honestly, thanks!

:hi:
