McCain pulled a Newt!!!!

From the NYT eight years ago:

Mr. McCain has acknowledged running around with women and accepted responsibility for the breakup of the marriage, without going into details. But his supporters and his biographer, Robert Timberg, all suggest that the marriage had already effectively ended and that the couple had separated by the time he met Cindy, his present wife.

That might be the most soothing way of explaining a politician's divorce from a disabled wife and his remarriage to a wealthy heiress, but it does not jibe with accounts of family members and friends.

car wreck while alone with three children, got fat, and he came home and rewarded her for keeping the faith by dumping her for a millionaire 25 year old. Let's talk character, shall we?

Carol, Number One, was a former model and a beauty. She got in a car wreck and they had to cut her legs, so she ended up SHORTER than she used to be.

She would never say shit against old John Boy, though. She got him out of Vietnam--if it weren't for her going on TV and persuading people to cover the POW issue (and, like I say, she was a beauty and made for great tee vee) he might have died.

He also screwed around like a wild man for awhile.

This probably won't grow legs and run. It's been asked and answered.

Here's my take, for what little it is worth: McCain actually thought he just MIGHT make flag rank. After all, his dad AND his granddad did.

He and Carol kept up the charade, precisely for that possibility. It's a big payday, and it would help the family.

When it became clear that he had reached his terminal rank, he said "Fuck it" and started chasing Cindy openly.

Carol got the houses, the car, the pension, alimony, insurance, and a job in the Reagan White House (I think Bud Day helped her out, there). She continued to keep the relationship "amicable" even after the split. She's even on his donor list!

I don't know if she did it "for the sake of the children" or because she was actually HAPPY to see the back of the guy. Supposedly, her stated reason for the split is that he went a little middle-aged crazy, and that was the end of that...
