Oberstar backing Obama


ST. PAUL (AP) - Representative Jim Oberstar is backing Barack Obama for president, now that John Edwards is out of the race.

The Minnesota Democrat announced his endorsement on a conference call Friday morning.

He says Obama offers a "soaring image of the future for America" and gives him credit for motivating more people to vote.

Edwards dropped out of the running on Wednesday, setting off a fight over his supporters between Obama and Hillary Clinton ahead of Tuesday's primaries and caucuses in more than 20 states, including Minnesota.

Oberstar had backed Edwards since 2005, leading a list of Iron Range and Duluth Democrats and union members behind the former North Carolina senator.
