Rochester Business Journal

February 1, 2008

The wave of support for Sen. Barack Obama has reached Rochester. He topped the list of presidential candidates—both Democrats and Republicans—in this week’s RBJ Daily Report Snap Poll, edging Sen. Hillary Clinton by 5 percentage points.
Roughly 1,230 readers took part in the poll, conducted Jan. 28 and 29—a few days after the Illinois Democrat swept to victory in the South Carolina primary and right on the heels of his endorsement by Sen. Edward Kennedy and Caroline Kennedy, daughter of former President John F. Kennedy.
The results showed a dramatic shift from early September, when the same question was put to Daily Report readers. In that poll, Clinton placed first with 27 percent, followed by former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, 21 percent, and former Sen. Fred Thompson (who had just entered the race) at 17 percent. Obama was fourth at 9 percent, and Arizona Sen. John McCain—now the Republican frontrunner—trailed at 3 percent, two percentage points behind former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.
On Tuesday, New Yorkers and voters in more than 20 other states will take part in Super Tuesday balloting—with the Democratic field reduced to Obama and Clinton, and the GOP race focused on McCain and Romney. (Giuliani and Democrat John Edwards ended their candidacies one day after this week’s Snap Poll concluded.)
The following are the specific poll question and results. (Only readers of the Daily Report e-mail are eligible to participate in the Snap Poll; all other responses—and any multiple responses by eligible readers—are filtered out.)
