Breaking: Ethel Kennedy Endorses Barack Obama
Breaking: Ethel Kennedy Endorses Barack Obama

CHICAGO, IL – The Obama Campaign today announced the endorsement of Ethel Kennedy. In a statement of support, Mrs. Kennedy compared Senator Obama to her late husband, Robert F. Kennedy, and cited Obama’s ability to unite the country, and lead America toward a more hopeful future.

“I was humbled to read Mrs. Kennedy’s statement,” said Senator Obama. “Few people hold such a cherished place in the hearts of Americans, and it’s an extraordinary honor to have her support.”

Below is Mrs. Kennedy’s full statement:

Over these past few years, I’ve watched Senator Obama inspire Americans from all walks of life to believe in real change and a new sense of hope and possibility. He’s a magnetic force, drawing the nation together for the common good and galvanizing us all to help shape our country’s future.

Barack is so like Bobby, who struggled for the rights of the poor in the Mississippi Delta and Appalachia, traveled to California to stand in solidarity with Cesar Chavez and farm workers, and fought to end another war that cost so many lives.

Today, we crave a leader with vision who can help us regain our lost humanity and rekindle our inherent generosity. With courage, caring, and charisma, Senator Obama is leading us toward a kinder, gentler world.

Senator Obama’s candidacy sends out ‘ripples of hope’ that can build a ‘current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.’ I am proud to support Barack Obama, and look forward to him leading this country toward a brighter, more hopeful future.

5. how many freakin' Kennedy's are there?
no wonder Ted Kennedy keeps winning re-election, all he has to do is have his family vote for him and he automatically gets 40% of the vote in Mass.

13. hahaha. Recycled news indeed.
The only thing you will find on Ethel Kennedy is from 2 years ago, so she didn't endorse in this cycle.

Or you could say it was kind of a lifetime endorsement.

Now all of us have to sit through another "Kennedy" endorsement. I don't consider that story fitting in the "breaking news" category. So what. All I see is another barrage of threads on the Kennedy's. Its like "back to the future" the new slogan for Obama camp.

I have been a registered Democrat for over 30 years. As far as posting on the DU, I have been posting on many forums,(including ones that aren't so nice to any democrat) so what's your problem. Just because you have used ONLY this particular site to post, means nothing. I actually thought the DU was a progressive site; everyone welcome to post their opinions; or maybe it's just the fact some people aren't following "the herd" for Obama. Chill.

16. Okay, who's for some Democrat bashing! How big a fossil is she? Is she a self-loathing woman hater?
Come on folks. Let's go!

I'm alittle sick of the way both sides come at these endorsements. Suddenly an elder statesman/woman has "jumped the shark" "no longer has any credibility" "is too old for anyone to give a shit about them" etc, etc, etc.

So they disagree with you on thier choice of candidates. Whoopie.

27. Elder statesman/woman
I don't give a shit if she endorsed him or not but surely she is not an elder statesman/woman - she sure is elder will be 80 in April but Jesus has she done anything except be married to Bobby Kennedy who has been dead for almost 40 years and raise 8 thousand kids - I'm not down playing that - but what I'm saying near as I can tell she has never been too politically active on her own....and therefore her connection to Bobby is the only reason her endorsement means anything.

Although I will say if I were her I would have stuck with my kids or kept my mouth shut....

30. Okay, I was looking for a word, and maybe that wasn't it. My basic point still stands though
I can understand disagreeing with someone when they endorse one candidate over another, but to start bashing them for not endorsing one's candidate just seems so over the top to me.

32. OK
well actually I think this whole endorsement thing is ridiculous - there is not one single endorsement tht would sway me in a Presidential election - only time endorsements are oa ANY value to me are activist group endorsements - in a smaller race where candidate info is harder to come by...

But I'm sure some people are swayed by them - the Kennedy thing is actually now becoming more comical then useful - pass the turkey and gravy please - although I am serious about Ethel she really should have backed her children or kept her mouth shut kind of poor form....but of course that is just my opinion....

34. It has been said that she backed him months ago and this is old news. So they are backing her
apparently. I'm not too sure as I haven't looked it up, but some on the thread are saying this is old. If true, then they came out with their endorsements after her, and so it wouldn't make much sense to say she should have backed them.

family has pretty much signed on to Hillary.

Sure, Ted is a great voice in the senate but one has to question his leadership abilities if he couldn't stop his flock of sheep from not even putting up a decent struggle against the Bush agenda.

50. As a Marylander from 6 years ago
I can say that it makes absolute sense that Kathleen Kennedy Townsend endorsed Hillary Clinton. Her gubenatorial campaign is a perfect metaphor for Clinton's Presidential run.

Both are where they are because of their family connections. Both were supposedly "next in line", while the Dems had far better candidates waiting in the wings (in KKT's case, it was Martin O'Malley).

And, should Hillary get the nom, she would follow right in KKT's bootsteps and get beaten in an election the Democrats had no business losing.

The difference is, unlike O'Malley, Obama doesn't want to wait four years.

47. That Part Is Ghoulish
I don't think they understand, and it rocks me that they don't understand. It's like a widow saying she's remarrying because the guy is just like her late husband. Can't she just be crazy about him on his own terrific merits? Isn't it enough? Does he have to wear the dusty silver shroud to the wedding?

If her endorsement stands for or symbolizes anything, carries any evocative power, it doesn't have to be cheapened that way.
