I think it's unfair that only goodlooking people can be president
Edited on Sun Feb-03-08 02:11 AM by ugdude
It's not fair to ugly people like me. Good looking people have everything handed to them anyway. I'm so disappointed that all of our nominees (Edwards, Hillary, Obama) are all exceptionally goodlooking.

All of our presidents have been goodlooking, have you noticed? This isnt a fucking popularity contest people. Why are we letting them get away with this time and time again?

Lets look at our presidents...

Reagan - goodlooking
Goerge Bush Snr - sort of goodlooking
Bill Clinton - goodlooking
Goerge Bush Jr - sort of goodlooking
Obama, Hillary, Edwards - goodlooking

LBJ was just Kennedy's VP though. He snuck through the ugly gate because you can't reject him after Kennedy gets killed and the nation mourns.

As for Bush, you may not like him, but he's a 'cute' chimp type guy (look I loathe his policies, but I'm being objective). He's in great shape and has all of his hair at an advanced age.

It's key not to be bald.

There's mostly ugly presidents in other countries. America is very unique in this regard.

Look at Howard (ex) in Australia who looked like Cheney, Olmert in Israel, Putin in Russia who is bald and 5"6, etc.

In other countries, looking old and powerful is more important than looking beautiful.

It's a bit off.

DU members would be all over TJ for that. There would be more threads going about Thomas Jefferson's voice than we had about "the snub". And of course Thomas Jefferson would go down in flames and some dumb ass like Bush would beat him even though Bush makes 100 times the fool out of himself than any of the Dem candidates. The main finding of poly sci in America is, you have to be both tall and not bald.

Howard Dean was always doomed because he was too short. It made him seem weak, and it was only a matter of time before some 'moment' was capitalized on because of him being so short.

You can't have a bald president. That's why McCain is doomed. If he had thick hair like Warner (R) in Virginia, he'd be a war hero gravitas guy. But instead he looks bald and ineffectual and weak.

There hasn't been a bald president since the TV era took off with Kennedy (Ford didn't get elected by anyone, just was VP of Nixon, LBJ got defacto elected cuz Kennedy got shot).

You have to go back to Eisenhower for a real president elect bald. And that was prior to the main tv era.

29. on Hillary
Hillary is not ugly, but she's not a looker either. She's average.

This is mostly why people think she's divisive and shrill and why the right hates her. They make fun of her thighs ALL THE time: Mark Levin calls her, 'her thighness', because she's not perfect weight (despite being 60).

It's not sexism though. They made fun of Dean being a midget, etc. It's about looks.

Hillary might still win though, but only because people are really voting for Bill, who is very good looking.

You can be president if you're ugly as long as you're associated with someone prior (LBJ with Kennedy, Hillary with Bill, etc.). Not on your own merit though.

If Obama wins, it will be because Hillary's lack of looks made people focus on her negatives too much.

If she looked graceful like Kathleen Sebelius, she'd win 70% of the votes. Trust me.

Hillary might not be a beauty on the order of someone like an Anne Hathaway but she is incredibly photogenic. I've seen only a few bad photos of her--amazing when you consider how many are shot and how many make the news.

I'm no Hillary fan but she always looks good--flattering hairstyle, nice clothes, neat.

bush might not be what we would call classically ugly but he so often looks vacant or drunk. His face is red and splotchy or messed up from falling off his bicycle or eating pretzels.

It shouldn't bother anyone though, because it's very natural. Nature wants to reward beauty so the genes stay in better circulation, etc, etc.

He can control it. Get hair plugs like Joe Biden and you look not bald from the front (where it matters, the perspective people see from a debate or as a talking head on tv).

That's why Biden did it. That's why he had any support on this forum. None of the other candidates (the original 9) or so were bald.

Right, its absurd to say Lincoln was ugly. He looked strange, but in terms of the things that matter in signalling health, he had them all.

Height - wasn't he like 6'5?

Hair - Full set of hair at older age

Weight - perfectly gracile and lanky

and yeah, the cheekbones were high and the face was strong with a prominent jawline

He just looked a bit different, but still healthy and attractive and dominant.

Disagree, Obama will still look very good at 70. Luo from Kenya tend to never lose their hair (really most East Africans too), and he seems to have this pattern.

His dark skin will hide a lot of wrinkles, and is he very tall to make any slight thing seem not too significant on a powerful man.

As Obama's hair goes gray, he will look more statesman than ever and only rise in looks (see Clinton).

Obama is too lanky to get fat either IMO.
