Obama supporters, will you sit out the election if Hillary is our nominee?
Let's get this out in the open. And what about if she selects him as VP? Will you give the election to McCain because she isn't ideologically pure enough.

How about some honesty for once.

50. Every vote DOES NOT count. This is the fundemental problem...
If you're in a state like New York, your vote for president truly and honestly DOES NOT COUNT. People who live there know this.

Regardless of who you support in Texas, your vote for president truly and honestly DOES NOT COUNT. People who live there know this. Same with California, same with Wyoming, etc.

As long as we continue with the electoral college and all that this implies, including state party structures, gerrymandering and all the rest, we really don't have representative democracy. Try to convince yourself of a fairy tale if you like, but its just that - a fairy tale.

Bottom line, we need a majority vote election, or a VERY large segment of the population will continue to know that truly and honestly their vote simply doesn't matter.

This, IMHO is far more important than whether we choose Obama or Clinton.

What a ludicrous question. This is a primary and I'm going to support Obama, but come the convention in late August, a full seven months from now, I'm pretty sure we're going to all be able to come together and support the actual nominee.

33. In 2004, we were at each other's throats, too.
The Deaniacs hated the Clarkies. The Edwards crowd (me, back then) couldn't freaking believe Kerry was running away with the thing.

We sputtered and spewed for a few more days... a week or two at most. And then by the time it was spring, we were back to uniting against Bush and taking back the White House. By summer Kerry put Edwards on the ticket. Early fall we had our convention, and what a convention it was.

McCain is going to throw so much crap at our eventual nominee that I really think we'll jump to the nominee's defense, in unison.

I was a mod during the 2004 primaries. I remember it was just as vicious then, only the primary season was much shorter.

I think it feels more intense because it's lasting much longer this time around.

It gets tedious. I always had this grand vision of DU, we'd plan our strategy for undermining the Reich wing, meet regularly outside of du, go to rallies, protest.

Then I realized the extent of that was limited to how many people I could fit on my ignore list because I am so disilusionedat the whole prcess.

We will NEVER be politicaly powerful again until we stop joing in cicular firing squads.

Because when I see this kind of language thrown at another Democrat:

then I guess the 'hatred being spewed' this time might indeed be a little worse than 2004.

28. I will absolutely vote for Hillary!
I don't think Obama's comments have anything to do with ideology. I think he is getting at the new people and the republicans that he is bringing into the process and the fact that some of them may simply not be inspired enough to come out for Hillary.

I am 21 years old and in college. I can say that a lot of my peers who are not uber-political or hardcore democrats may not turnout for Hillary, and those on the fence would be much more likely to vote for McCain. I will do everything I can do to change their mind, but its an uphill battle with Hillary, with Obama its a sinch.

She will still win the youth vote, she will still see an increase in youth turnout, it just won't be on the scale that it would be for Obama.

63. I'm honestly undecided at that point, but leaning toward McCain. My big issue is...
Edited on Sun Feb-03-08 02:31 PM by sfam
The national debt, after the notion of bringing our country back together, that is. I really do believe our country's best days are behind us unless we find some way to reign this stuff in. So McCain is a good choice to address this.

I really don't see that much difference on the Iraq situation, regardless of who wins (I am furious at democrats who voted for the war, regardless whether or not they now have apologized for it or not - this has been one of the worst disasters ever, and YES, this clearly points to HORRID judgment - assuming it was judgment and not triangulation). Lets face it, the Army is virtually broken. McCain may want to keep the country in Iraq for 100 years, but he just doesn't have the money or soldiers to do this.

Integrity matters to me, and I have a tough time with Hillary on this point. But I may still vote for her based on health care, and some other economic issues. But she would really have to sell me on lowering the national debt and stopping the earmarks.

EDIT: And no, I don't always vote the party line. I vote for John Warner, for instance as a VA Senator (ever since he effectively killed Ollie North's chances). I am better characterized as a left-leaning independent who thinks gerrymandering and the electoral college has striped our representative democracy from us.

110. If you think I'm alone on this perspective, you're living in a dream world.
Truly. I think you'll find that a very large percentage of the moderates in this country share very similar sentiments. Call me an idiot if you like, but realize this is a reality of the electorate right now. We've had insane spending for the last 8-9 years or so. To think that this isn't going to affect people's choices is silly.

112. I consider myself to be fairly fiscally conservative, and to consider
voting for a Republican who wants to continue a fruitless war and start another to the tune of billions and billions of dollars more over the next few years, when we're already busting our budget and borrowing from China to pay for what we're doing now, is the DEFINITION of idiotic. Sorry, Dems are the party of fiscal responsibility just on this point alone, unless you see some sort of benefit to wrecking our treasury and our military for years to come.

"Like i said, reading comprehension not needed, you have to repeat everything everyone types to understand it?"

102. Obama is talking about the new people he has brought on board
They have been apathetic in the past because they see the 2-party system as corrupt and indifferent to their needs. They don't see the world through a partisan lens. They see both major parties as colluding in the mess we find ourselves in.

They don't even know DU exists!

Like Obama, I don't see too many of them remaining engaged if they are presented with a business-as-usual choice in November.
