Joan Baez endorses Obama

Leader on a new journey

Editor - I have attempted throughout my life to give a voice to the voiceless, hope to the hopeless, encouragement to the discouraged, and options to the cynical and complacent. From Northern Ireland to Sarajevo to Latin America, I have sung and marched, engaged in civil disobedience, visited war zones, and broken bread with those who had little bread to break.

Through all those years, I chose not to engage in party politics. Though I was asked many times to endorse candidates at every level, I was never comfortable doing so. At this time, however, changing that posture feels like the responsible thing to do. If anyone can navigate the contaminated waters of Washington, lift up the poor, and appeal to the rich to share their wealth, it is Sen. Barack Obama. If anyone can bring light to the darkened corners of this nation and restore our positive influence in world affairs, it is Barack Obama. If anyone can begin the process of healing and bring unity to a country that has been divided for too long, it is Barack Obama. It is time to begin a new journey.

JOAN BAEZ

74. Did he really?
I have more respect for him.

There is so much GAS around Obama, it is very hard to see through the fog, just the little tin soldiers falling one by one.

It's always heartening to see someone whom you think would follow the hot Hollywood trend stand on his own two feet, show he has a mind of his own.

The corporate candidate obama offers nothing new, he's Bush.

Tell me about Obama's efforts to privatize social security.

Or maybe you think it's OK, or he wont really do that, he's just saying that to get elected.

Oh.

This is the biggest BS Youth Hype since Hitler.
No. I am not comparing Obama to Hitler, but it is
frightening how easy it is for people to lose their
brains, roll their eyes in the back of their head and
froth at the mouth.

For what, they don't know.

but if Teddy and Oprah say it's right, it must be so.

Damned. I'm coming up with a song

and Joan. Baez could strum along.

More like Grace Slick, actually. She's probably
still puking over all the Love at the Hollywood Bowl.

If Obama is actually elected, how long before these
idiots realize they've got themselves little better than
a George Bush of whom it is taboo to criticize.

She pays tribute to the civil rights movement throughout and makes special mention of MLK before doing "Pilgrim Of Sorrow." To think he was yet to be tragically snatched away from us, a year later.

91. That's a great idea!
And very necessary too. The conservative think tanks have totally obliterated ANY sense of how it really was.............

We went to hear Baez at the Camden Music Circus around '58,'60. It was a sticky hot humid day. ( see we didn't have much air conditioning back in those days, unimaginable now! Today's audience would just get up & leave!) SHe ran out of songs, asked for audience requests........ nobody had any ideas......SO she pushed forward this curly haired "kid" and let him song! He electrified, because of course it was Dylan! And he finished out the concert with great energy, and talent.
First time I had ever heard of him. He hadn't got started yet with his career!

A great and moving experience and she is quite witty too. Only fault of that program was that she should have mentioned that one of the songs was by Phil Ochs.

21. The most significant part of that particular endorsement is that...

...it wasn't delivered at a press conference or in a photo-op or on a rally stage or even in a guest op-ed column -- Ms. Baez wrote it in a plain old ordinary letter to the editor she sent to the SF Chronicle, just like anyone else.

I think that says a hell of a lot about Ms. Baez and Mr. Obama both. And what it says about them both is all good, compared to the relentless torrents of big-news, loud-noise stuff being poured out at the national media level this past week or two...

She was unbelievably great - they are both my heroes. They are both so articulate, and spoke eloquently for peace and justice; the crowd went wild. I care what she thinks.

Do you research; I'm sure your post sounds more ill-informed than you suspect; and, I'm sure that you deserve better. Like I said, do your research; she still has a great deal of credibility with many, many people.

97. Of course she does
She comes from the generation that was all talk and no action on moving the world towards harmony. After hanging up the love beads, they went out and manned the corporate greed machines that raped and pillaged America for the next thirty + years. But its o.k., because they were at Woodstock.

Obama is the perfect candidate for her, because he's all talk and no substance; just like her generation. Now it seems we have a new group of these losers coming up; except instead of Woodstock, they make You Tube videos out of their cult leaders platitudes.

99. That is a silly response
My point is that I don't think anyone, myself included, has the answer when it comes to changing the world. The effort to actually 'change' things will be monumental -- more so than repeating platitudes. It will require sacrifice and work -- words AND actions, not just words.

101. Perhaps, but it was appropriate to your post.
I'll admit that I can remember making similar remarks to my elders during the sixties. We forced some changes in civil rights, women's rights, voter's rights, stopped the Vietnam War, and stopped the draft. Joan Baez was both vocal and instrumental to these efforts. (You like puns?) We got beat on and jailed for our efforts. But, with the war over, most went back to their lives.

Subsequent events, the backlash, was unforeseen. This was new territory. Fact is, many had to take on family responsibilities and turn to our jobs, while the enemies of progress could devote full time to revisionism. Subsequent generations have not done anything to help. Where is the anti-war movement on college campuses? I mostly hear denigration of what we "hippies" did. We actually accomplished a lot. Joan, and her sisters helped more than most:

Joan could have done very well just singing, and stayed out of jail. Note that the proceeds of the poster went to the Draft Resistance, and the draft ended. Coincidence? Maybe.

This post of yours sounds a little more enlightened. But you should realize who your friends are. Joan Baez is one of them. The problems that face us are more insidious and complex than your post would indicate. We no longer have independent mass media to help. No doubt "sacrifice and work" will be required, and there are more obstacles to that now than in the 60s.

Neither Hillary nor Barack, with their corporate supporters, appears to be the answer, but they're the best we've got for now. I understand your frustration. I lectured my parents, who thought they had the job done when they beat Hitler. But it will never be over.

107. No action? You clearly know nothing about her.
She's marched for civil rights and against dumb wars. She's fought for human rights on the ground all around the world. And she's inspired millions to do the same.

You should be ashamed of yourself.

100. Luna was a Mexica, the law calls an alien ...
... for coming across the border with a baby and a wife
Though the clothes upon his back were wet,
still he thought that he could get
Some money, and things to start a life

It hadn't been too very long when it seemed like everything went wrong
Didn't even have the time to find himself a home
When this foreigner, a brown-skinned male, was thrown inside a Texas jail
Left the wife and baby quite alone

That's all I can remember of the lyrics, except I remember something about him turning to the needle while in prison out of desperation to escape his anguish.

Just want to confirm that Baez has always, always, always been for the downtrodden. I hope her sympathies will square with whatever Barack's attitudes are on immigration.

By the way, this was my favorite song from one of her albums, of which I can't even remember the name of that album. But I damn sure remember this song, "Raze The Prisons (to the Ground)."
