Who would you rather have choose - Edwards or some superdelegates?
Because that may end up being our two choices.

With Edwards getting out of the race, Obama has picked up a lot of momentum heading into Super Tuesday. Rather than having the effect of allowing the American People to choose their Democratic nominee, as many have suggested, Edwards' abrupt exit from the race may now have an entirely different effect: The decision may end up in the hands of a few superdelegates - many of whom we don't even know yet!

"Missing 76"

Is that what you want?

The possibility of a brokered convention has NOT disappeared with Edwards' exit. The possibility of a very nasty political battle over the seating of delegates from Michigan and Florida is now also becoming more and more likely.

So if you're undecided and have been an Edwards supporter - if you're not leaning toward either Obama or Clinton - I'd suggest voting EDWARDS! Why? Because he currently has 14 delegates and stands to gain perhaps as many as 100 on Super Tuesday!

I don't know about you, but if I knew the final decision regarding the Democratic Nominee would be either in the hands of some superdelegates I don't even know, or John Edwards, I know where I'd like it to be on the day of the Convention.

"Throwing your vote away"? Pah!!!!

2. The assumption is that at some point one of the celebrity candidates will break through
Edited on Mon Feb-04-08 01:49 AM by jackson_dem
The only modern precedent for a long primary battle between two equally strong candidates is the rethugs from 1976. In ever other case someone breaks through. It may happen again this time. I won't worry about a brokered convention until the March 4 Ohio and Texas primaries. That's just my two cents. :hi:

Voting for Edwards is great as a protest. Primaries are where you can vote your heart. He won't win anymore delegates, though. There won't be enough protest votes to get him to 15%. I would love for this not to be so and have Edwards have a major convention role but it won't happen. That having been stated no one should be bullied into voting for one of the celebrity candidates on Super Tuesday. Vote your heart.

6. yawn
If John wanted your votes wouldn't he ask for them?

Secondly, any delegates that wins/has won are not "his", they are free to go to whomever they choose. A delegate gets assigned to the candidate but they may have there own preferences, they have absolutely zero obligation to listen to Edwards.

7. Spelled "their" wrong ;-)

They're pledged delegates. Are you saying that all the pledged delegates that Obama and Clinton win are free to change their affiliation as well?

You could be right, but I'm thinking your word is not the definitive one on this. Why don't you provide me with a link to the specific rule you appear to be referring to?

Actually the rules are different for each state and the whole thing is very complicated. In some cases he gets to choose the delegates but not who they vote for. However it's possible that he could endorse one of the two remaining candidates and sway the vote in that way by influencing those either pledged to him or chosen by him to vote in a certain way. And he may choose delegates based on inside knowledge regarding how they'll likely vote.

10. first round of voting the delegates are counted based on which candidate
won them. If there is no winner of the amount needed to be the nominee, voting moves to the 2nd round.

If delegates have been assigned to candidates no longer in the race, they are free to go to any of the remaining candidates to help them reach the threshold.
