online analysis of electoral politics.

The results of our latest national survey of 855 registered voters, conducted January 31 to February 2 by Thom Riehle and RT Strategies for the Cook Political Report, are available here.

In the Democratic Primary contest, Sen. Barack Obama leads Sen. Hillary Clinton by five points, 43 percent to 37 percent.

In the Republican contest, Sen. John McCain takes first place with 39 percent, with former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney trailing at 24 percent. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee comes in third with 18 percent and Cong. Ron Paul takes nine percent.

In the head to head match ups, McCain leads Clinton 45 percent to 41 percent. But, Obama bests McCain by two points, 45 percent to 43 percent. In addition, Clinton leads Romney 48 percent to 42 percent and Obama bests Romney, 50 percent to 41 percent.
