go to a mosque for Friday prayers with his step-father, Soetero. Now Soetero was not at all a particularly religious man, nothing near a fundamentalist. But he would occasionally go to the mosque, and sometimes, Barack would go with him.

As I'm given to understand, Islam, unlike Christianity, does not have a particular sacrament or ceremony by which children become official members of the religion - nothing like a baptism, confirmation or even Bar Mitzvah. However, all one has to do to officially become a Muslim is to recite a couple of lines, beginning: "I bear witness that there is no God but Allah, and that Muhammad is his messenger" etc. etc. This recitation is part of the liturgy of Muslim prayers, so Barack must have recited it at the mosque.

Does this matter? No. Obama's not a Muslim. He's not a Manchurian Candidate for the Islamists. All it really means, as I see it, is that in the eyes of extremist Muslims, Obama will be seen as an apostate: it is mainstream Muslim theology that the punishment for apostates should be death. In other words, we couldn't piss off Al Qaeda, Hezbollah or Hamas any more if we elected Joe Lieberman President!

as a child without realizing it, and therefore all these radical Muslims are going to have a particular loathing for him. It's an interesting theory, but I don't really buy it. I doubt that Al Qaeda, Hezbollah or Hamas are going to hate him anymore than they would hate any other American president, but you're free to think what you like. :)

That's as far as it goes, probably not too far. I remember seeing a thread a number of weeks ago here with a press report out of the Middle East that told us that Obama was the "favorite" of the "Arab street." So the apostasy issue clearly hasn't any traction yet.

That e-mail is insulting to many Muslim Americans in this country. We have a large muslim population in certain areas of NJ. Its a shame how many dems haven't com out to express how wrong it is for people to label Obama as a radical muslim or the fact that most muslims aren't radicals.
