Dem gay-lesbian vote is split

Rachel Gordon, Chronicle Staff Writer
Tuesday, February 5, 2008

Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton, the Democratic U.S. senators locked in a tight race for their party's presidential nomination, appear to have split support among gay and lesbian voters, with neither candidate yet to emerge as the clear frontrunner.

Both campaigns have outreach efforts focused on the gay and lesbian community, which has proved potent when it comes to fundraising and get-out-the-vote efforts for Democratic candidates.

During this primary season, same-sex marriage has not been elevated to a lightning-rod issue as it was in the 2004 general election when the victory for same-sex marriage proponents in Massachusetts was still fresh in the public's mind, as was the short-lived test of same-sex marriage in San Francisco.

Obama and Clinton - whose positions on gay-rights issues are similar - have formed national and state steering committees focused on gay and lesbian voters and issues. Locally, their supporters have organized grassroots efforts, such as gay-focused phone-banking sessions, fundraising parties and get-out-the-vote drives.

2. Thanks for the heads-up, cboy.
What did you make of the Etheridge endorsement?

It's "Tuesday Morning," and I'm thinking of Mark Bingham.

4. I'm not surprised. I know she was on the Human Rights
Campaign candidate forum panel, and later insinuated she wasn't exactly pleased with Hillary's refusal to criticize her husband signing DADT and DOMA when that issue was raised.

Personally, I don't trust Hillary or Obama when it comes to LGBT issues, which is why I don't support either. :)

7. And of Chris who was so disrespected in his grief.
I think part of my Hillary Problem is that I will always associate DADT with the Clintons. They folded like a cheap suit on that one for political expediency. While it's not fair to blame Hillary for that one, I have no reason to expect different from her.

3. Is there any discernible difference in their positions?

Obama's people booked that idiot, I know. But apart from that, is there anything different? They are both opposed to marriage. They've both said something vague about abolishing DADT.

5. Well Hillary doesn't support full repeal of DOMA, while
Obama does.

"DOMA contains two provisions: one that gives states autonomy on marriage and one that prohibits federal recognition of same-sex marriages. With the precision of a neurosurgeon, Clinton cut herself free of the second plank of the law while continuing to embrace the first plank, essentially saying that she would let states decide their own destiny on marriage but leave the door open for federal recognition of same-sex unions."

11. Nice brush off "...Obama's people". Please tell me that Obama is not following the Republican lead

of passing the buck when mistakes are made. He knew damn well who McClurkin was and what he had said (gays "kill America's children"/homosexuality is something to be "delivered" from. If he didn't before the "ex-gay" gospel singing preacher was booked, he sure as hell knew in plenty of time to cancel him as a representative of Obama to S.C. and the nation. Obama chose not to, and he lied about the role McClurkin played at the event AFTER THE FACT. All of that is what you just brushed off like it was nothing. This gay man will not let it slide by or be forgotten.
