A toast to the pollworkers!
:toast:

I love walking down to my polling station and chatting with the old ladies (mostly) who volunteer there. I did it one year, and it's hard. It's ALL day. Get there at 6:00am to set up, work all day, then a few hours after the polls close. We had to visually inspect each ballot to look for errors or stray marks. Then, we had to bundle up all the equpment and the ballots and take them down to City Hall. (now they have an optiscan machine that examines the ballots, so that part's easier now).

I don't do it anymore because I hated hated HATED not being home to watch the election returns. But I imagine I'll do it again in the future - it's important.

Anyway... every time I go there, I see the same ladies who I worked with years ago. They're troupers - every election, the same nice old ladies there to greet you with a smile, sign you in, and hand you a ballot.

Thanks pollworkers! You do important work!

4. Hear, hear.
Visiting with the elderly ladies at the polls is one of the great things about voting. Especially in my small town--always the same workers, a beautiful mixture of black and white women. I am in awe of their endurance--they hand-count ballots in our city elections, and sometimes they are there well past midnight...

Then they have to meet the following day to go over provisional ballots.

Here's to them! :toast:

5. I can tell you, it's a LONG fucking day!
when I did it, I was the only man, and the only person under 60. So guess who set up and packed up all the equipment?

I enjoyed it, though. If they'd just let you go when the polls close, I'd do it again in a heartbeat. I'm just too much of a news junkie.

7. Same here.
The pollworkers in my area are always nice, polite and very efficient.

They're good people.
