4. That newspaper fucked up. JAG is Judge ADVOCATE General.
Sloppy editing. Piss poor fact checking!!! And it is the same for all Services.

There is a judge Adjutant General's office. Consider the following document:

It *explicitly* states that Judge Advocate General's Corp are the operational responsibility the The Judge Adjutant General officers.

8. I think it's an artifact of an earlier time
I know the term because I've seen it in some stories set in the post civil war era. But a brief survey online finds a lot of old documents with it, and not so many new ones. It could be the office doesn't really exist any more and its responsibilities have been entirely transfered to the modern JAG.

9. I could almost qualify as a servicemember from an earlier time. (!)
They had C-RATS when I first went on active duty...MREs when I retired (much better, those!).

This place does teach me something every day--I've learned a new term!
